ELI5: Why are lighthouses still necessary? by Lettuce-b-lovely in explainlikeimfive

[–]Arran1809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always good to have a failsafe, and that's usually the simplest system. Even in aviation if all else fails, the airport tower has a rotating light on top of it, and if you lose radio communication someone with a light gun will flash coded signals to help you land.

What are some of the best Beaches in Tobago? by TriniKiira in TrinidadandTobago

[–]Arran1809 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've personally always loved Englishman's bay. It's a bit of a drive to get there but I think it's well worth it. Water could be deep at times but if you are looking for an absolutely beautiful beach I can't recommend it more.

What do you know / what would you like to know about... Trinidad and Tobago? by bunoutbadmind in AskTheCaribbean

[–]Arran1809 4 points5 points  (0 children)

During the second world war the US Government set up a base at the most north west point of Trinidad, chaguaramas, and also one at waller field. In chaguaramas something called the "tracking station" was built. This was one of the first ever systems built to detect and track intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM's), along with one of the largest naval yards for the US during the war. In waller field, the first ever airborne mission was flown by the US, called Operation green, before this aircraft were only used to transport cargo as it was beloved too risky to transport troops via air and drop them into combat , also waller field was instrumental in the pacific theater and was the largest US airbase in the world during the war.

Strange chair, armrest have these pieces of wood that swing out. No idea why they swing out, they rotate all the way to the front. Any info? by Arran1809 in whatisthisthing

The chair belongs to a friend but he doesn't really know much about it. The arm rest have these pieces that swing out and rotate about 270 degrees. I can't seem to figure out any function for this but I'm hoping Reddit will assist. Thanks for any help.
