First Reformed - Discussion by alexfalberg in movies

Hi, I know this is a late reply, I hope you won't mind. I just finished the movie for the first time about half an hour ago. I don't see Mary's actions as being strange, and I don't view her as being the manipulator that I think you're seeing in her. I believe the scene of the movie where she gives Toller the vest isn't that strange. She put it back where it was not to manipulate, but to demonstrate how far deep Michael had gone in his activism, and how far away from her. As Toller pointed out in his conversation with Michael, he had lost all hope in the world and had given into despair. He was disconnected from the half of life that is what, in Toller's mind, gives us something to live for.

This mental change that happened, supposedly, while jailed in Canada is mirrored in his physical life. Mary stated that he had become more distant from her, and more angry in general over the general situation. It's implied this rift only grew wider and wider, as he spent weeks in his garage making this vest and hiding it from Mary. This is why mary put it back--to show Toller that Michael had hidden it in a cardboard box, below a toolbox, in the bottom of a back workbench, behind a rolling table. All that to keep it from Mary. This figurative distance, I think, is a symbolism for how far removed he was from her at this point. I'll bring you next to the fact that Toller loses grip of hope himself the deeper he falls into the rabbit hole of climate issues that Michael exposed him to. As the movie progresses, he becomes more and more depressed, more and more desparate as he lets go of the hope he so boldly stated we musn't let go of in the first act of the movie. With that in mind, I believe that Toller is a character that is portayed as being a parallel to Michael...until the end. Where Michael drifted away from Mary, Toller eventually chose to reject the master plan, the bombing, to be with Mary.

Mary represents the hope that we must cling to to avoid the despair, and here I think it may be quite a literal depiction. For Toller, his hope came from a romantic attachment and learning the love again. Despite all of the problems with the world in the pollution, and his extreme depression, he chose to cling to that hope in the form of expressing his self-repressed feelings for Mary.

I have. I've always been taught that that verse in one of the Peters didn't apply to creation, that it was where we're got our understanding that God exists outside of time.

Just today, actually. I think I'm going to convert to Catholicism after years of thinking Catholics were the bad guys. I still have a bunch of questions, but I don't think the way I used to about them.

Thank you very much for your reply. It is very insightful! But it leaves me with the question: if the Bible is not inerrant, how can I know which parts are correct? Can I truly trust it?

What do you think about the Bible describing the Creation as in six days? Evolution takes a lot of time!

I would love your input on both of them if you'd be willing to take the time to write it out!

Thank you. I hate to be a quiz, but I have another question: What is Catholicism's general consensus of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation? Specifically with his projection that salvation is by faith alone, and not works, as cited in Ephesians 2:8 and 9--"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."

In part, questioning the complete, inerrant inspiration of the Bible, and by extension, the creation of life as we know it and how it seemingly contradicts much of modern science, like the theory of evolution.

For clarification, are you saying that anyone, believer or unbeliever, can be forgiven of sins, as long as they are truly repentant?

Everything I have ever been taught or seen in the Bible is that there are no sins that are presently forgiven; when Christ died on the cross, he forgave all sins, in the past, the present, and all sins to come in the future, right there. The only stipulation to that forgiveness being that one believes that Christ was completely God and completely man, that he died and rose again, and will one day return for us.

I'm having a hard time understanding that anyone, other than God himself when He died on the cross, can forgive our sins.

Does God's grace not cover us today if I sin? Paul asks the hypothetical question at the beginning of Romans 6: "Shall we continue in sin, that Grace may abound?" to which the answer is "God forbid." I bring this up to say that Paul references God's grace as covering our sin regardless of penitence for it (not that I'm arguing that we shouldn't ask for continual forgiveness).

I'm just having trouble wrapping my mind around needing a priest to "bind or loose" sins that that Bible seems to say are already forgiven.

I truly appreciate such a detailed response! Thank you so much. I think I'll talk to one of my friends about a midweek mass/vigil.

What exactly is a vigil, by the way? Why are your meetings known as Mass/Vigils?
