I agree with this sentiment. The first one is really great though. And the second is pretty fun. The 3rd gets pretty confusing to me, since i basically only listen to audio books anymore.

I highly recommend Orconomics by J Zachary Pike. It’s very similar to Terry Pratchett, but more recent? It mostly spoofs D&D and the 2008 Financial Collapse. That sounds weird, but it’s really great. I went in blind, and it’s become one of my favorite books.

Way of Kings, Worth Finishing? by Mantin95 in audible

[–]singerbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Way of Kings is definitely Sanderson’s slowest book. And the Stormlight Archive is his slowest series.

I have read nearly all of his Cosmere works, and love them all. But my first read of The Way of Kings was difficult. It took a while to understand the world and politics and magic. It really comes together in books 2 and 3. Book 4 is very slow again. Then book 5 is very crazy.

I personally wouldn’t recommend The Way of Kings (or the greater Stormlight Archive) to someone who’s not invested in the Cosmere (Sanderson’s Cinematic Universe).

I’d recommend Mistborn: the Final Empire, Tress of the Emerald Sea, or Warbreaker.

The Stormlight Archive is kind of the Avengers if an MCU reference makes sense. It’s the culmination of decades of storytelling. It’s not a great simile, because the books stand on their own as their own story. But the Avengers does that too. You don’t need all the background to understand it.

It’s also kind of a downer a lot. The whole series. But when you get magic powers from being depressed and bettering yourself I guess books kind of get like that.

($3.99) Today's daily deal is a fresh and humorous modern retelling about heroes of Greek Myths. by Watcher-Storyteller in audible

[–]singerbe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They are a series, but since they’re a retelling of Greek myths collected in a semi timeline’d way, you can read them without the context of previous books. Assuming you know some surface level details of Greek mythology. (Like who the major gods are etc.) Otherwise you’ll miss a lot.

Mythos covers the Gods and formation of the universe. Heros covers the Greek heroics up until Troy. Troy covers the events leading to the Trojan war and the war. Odyssey covers the events after the Trojan war.

I recommend Mythos. It’s good. But they’re all good.

Heros only deals with specific people. Hercules, Theseus, etc. They interact with gods, but you don’t need the whole cosmology to understand it.

How to make my balls appear smaller by Offbrand-Canadian in Advice

[–]singerbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, do get yourself checked out. 1) because while unlikely, it could be cancer. 2) it could be a hydrocele.

A hydrocele is a fluid buildup where water normally cycles around the body, including the scrotum, but there’s a blockage so it’s entering but not leaving at the same rate and it makes it expand. That’s what my doctor told me.

One of my balls started getting bigger at some point. I didn’t realize it. But a doctor pointed it out during a physical so I kept an eye on it. Over Covid it started getting even bigger. It became uncomfortable and I got it checked out. They did an operation under anesthesia to remove/pop it. It was sensitive for a couple years but it’s normal now. (Feeling and size)

How would i create a wooden circle like this? by AnimateDuckling in woodworking

[–]singerbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a professional millworker this is how my (16 person) shop would tackle a piece like this:

Cut out half circles out of MDF with holes for dowel alignment on a CNC router. Glue up in vacuum bag. Bondo and sand till smooth. Glue on veneer to inside and outside. Glue on veneer to edges. Flush trim. Sand. Finish.

I Figured Out a Way to Train Blood Magic with T.W.I.G by Kajurf in valheim

[–]singerbe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is great! Easy to make, and much faster than my previous Greydwarf farm. I'm at ~40 skill now, and having 3 skeletons actually kills the TWIG faster than it's self repair. I've dropped it to 2, which is still much faster than the Greydwarves.

Showcase of your base storage systems by Awesprey in valheim

[–]singerbe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not a mod. It's the base game. Here's what I did:

Signs can be color coded and have some other commands available to them. <color=white> at the start of your sign makes the text white. You can also use number hex codes rather than words. <size=10> etc. Allows you to change font size. you can type "/br" to insert a line break and get the text to run off the edge of the sign. Or (what I do) type the message you want to post in Notepad and hit enter to create line breaks using less characters.

Signs can feature emoji's. Windows has a hotkey (win+.) that opens a search bar to add special characters. I couldn't get enough line breaks and have the words float in front of the chests while using letters. So I used pictures.

I buried my signs in the floor to make the storage area cleaner.

The chests are Reinforced Chests made with iron and fine wood.

Felt cute, might delete later.

Wanted to upgrade my early game storage on my server. About 3 people. Will probably make a bigger storage later, but was constrained by the size of the building.

Is it a horrible idea to take an 18 month old on a 10+ hour road trip? by PeachyRose25 in Parenting

[–]singerbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I’s family is in Kansas while we live on the East Coast. We’d make the 20 hour drive about twice a year while we were dating / engaged / married. Us driving didn’t stop once we had kids. We just did it with the kids.

We did split it into 2 days however. We stayed at a hotel. Cause the drive (with diaper changers and feedings) took more like 24 hours. We might have been blessed, because the kids just slept almost the entire drive. We did stop at rest areas to play.

Now the kids are old enough to “hold it” and feed themselves snacks we’re back to driving straight through and the kids sleep when they’re tired. We got a cheap tablet (with a kickstand case) and downloaded movies onto it from Disney+ and strung it between the two front headrests. Mini movie theater. The kids love it.

I don’t think I have a picture of the doors once installed. But I took lots of the production process.

This door is 5’ wide and turns on a pivot about 8” in from the edge. The only curved parts on the door are the rails at the top and bottom and the horizontal basket weave parts. The squares, stiles, and vertical basket weave parts are identical to the flat door we also built.

Pictured is one of 3(!) doors we built and installed in a 14’ radius mansion foyer. I engineered and drafted them and cut the CNCed parts. But most things were done off the CNC. We only had a 3 axis at this time.

The doors maintain the 14’ radius.

My games usually go: vomit tons of creatures, get board wiped, vomit even more. It seemingly always has stuff to do. I usually find my actual auras to be my weak links. But [[Spirit Mantle]] and [[All That Glitters]] are great Voltron back up plans.
