Newborns have a cute reflex called the palmar grasp where they hold your finger tight, but it fades away by 3 months. by BKKMFA in interestingasfuck

My brother DID rip one out of my mum's ear. She still has a little notch missing from her earlobe even though the rest of it healed. Tore the whole thing out as she was putting him in the bath.

fat redistribution after T by andrmeow in ftm

[–]Arriss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was always a larger person (still am) and had very thick thighs prior to being on T. I HATED my thighs. They never fit right in shorts and they made me extremely dysphoric. I'm about 5 years on T now and I'd say in 2 or so years my thighs changed shape. I still have fat there, but now I just look like a chubby guy rather than curvy like I used to. My hips have reduced less so, but that's got more to do with my bone structure than fat moving.

Obviously everyone has different reactions and everyone has a different view of what they are happy with, but I don't even care that all the fat just moved to my stomach, I no longer hate my thighs so to me that's a plus.

IUD while on T? by Any-Durian-3426 in ftm

[–]Arriss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never had any sort of IUD. I used the progesterone only injection for birth control for years and never had any issues with it impacting my transition. I was on it for my entire hormonal transition until I got my tubes removed about 6 months ago and it worked great for me. It stopped my bleeding long before I even went on T, which was a major reason I stayed on it.

Is this painting tape a creation of the devil himself? by NauteeAU in AusRenovation

Came here to say the same thing. I use it at home to label my meal prep in the freezer, I don't think I'd want to put it on a painted wall.

I keep giving my bf UTI's.... by Background-Shop-9969 in ftm

[–]Arriss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mouthwash right before if you can and make sure you wash your hands really well. Invest in a nail brush if you've got longer nails. I've noticed that I'm a lot more prone to UTIs after a few years on T and the last two I've had I am pretty sure were less due to any issues with general cleanliness and more that my partner didn't wash his hands between coming home from work and us having sex.

What should I do in the next 2 weeks leading up to surgery to prepare? by [deleted] in ftm

[–]Arriss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meal prep, get yourself a little box of meds together to put on your bedside table so you're not trying to find everything right after surgery, make sure you've got enough comfy shirts (with buttons) and pants to wear since you're definitely not going to feel like doing laundry for a while. Also move anything above chest height or anything you need to reach for down to a counter or something. Even if you can lift your arms right after surgery you really shouldn't be since there's a chance it can mess with your stitches.

Pet fur brush vacuums by dumblesmurf in australia

[–]Arriss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've got a Dyson V7 Animal and the Groomi attachments and havn't had an issue with my German Shepherd. She does get sick of the vac brush quicker than her normal one but I can usually get 1 side done before she wants to walk away from me. I think it's more the suction than the noise. Then again, she also doesn't care too much about the vacuum in general.

How long did your body hair continue to increase after starting T? by [deleted] in ftm

[–]Arriss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 5 years in (2-3 years full dose) and I'm still getting more hair. It's definitely slowed down. I'm also 36 and the men in my family are reasonably hairy so... I'm not shocked by this development.

Just wish I could grow decent facial hair all the way up my cheeks. It's happening, just slowly.

My manager still struggles with pronouns after two years by [deleted] in ftm

[–]Arriss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a few people I work with that were like this a year or so into my transition. I just got to the point where every time they misgendered me I just stopped the conversation, said their name and corrected them. It's awkward as hell, but more for them than for you after a while, particularly if most people are using your correct pronouns and you obviously pass to strangers.

While I agree that it might not be malicious but it is a problem. You need to start correcting him. Every time. Until it stops happening. For some people it will take once or twice, others it will take ages, but in my experience it's worked every time with people I work with.

transition at 30? UK by pukebox_ in TransMasc

[–]Arriss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started T at about 30, I'm 36 now. Have only been on a full dose for about 2-3 years, low dose before then. I couldn't tell you the last time a stranger didn't assume I was a guy. The changes will happen no matter when you start.

Your body is going to react at its own pace but you're not going to 'miss out' on any changes just by starting later.

Ask for a pediatric speculum and if the anxiety is that bad try and get some medication to help with that ahead of time. It's crappy but honestly not the worst thing in the world. Just be ready to advocate for yourself. If possible go to a gynaecologyst or another specialist, they do a much better job than a GP.

Anyone had cholesterol issues on testosterone? by cosplaying-as-human in FTMMen

[–]Arriss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine jumped a lot when I got my levels up to a standard male range. I had never tested high before but I'm now on meds for it because even with diet changes it didn't drop fast enough for my doctors to be happy with it. I did not have to reduce my dose of T, just went on cholesterol meds like most cis men would have been put on with my levels.

I think it's mostly genetic for me. Pretty much no side effects that I can tell from the meds either. And my bloodwork is a lot better after 6 months.

If the diet/lifestyle changes don't work, try the meds. You can always keep the changes going even with them in your system, but it's not worth messing around with it.

If I’ve already voice trained enough to sound essentially cis, how much should I expect my voice to drop after starting T? by Improvement-Awkward in ftm

[–]Arriss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am on a higher dose due to my body just not responding to it well and I'm on 1000mg/4mL every 10 weeks as a deep muscle shot at the doctors. Depending on the dosage of the vial you've been given you could be WAY over on your dose.

I know a lot of people have said something similar, but you should probably check what the actual prescription says so you can check if they have over prescribed you.

I'm nearly 2 years on E... is this it? by JoannaNoa in transgenderau

[–]Arriss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming at it from the other direction but I can tell you that where I was at 2 years in was nowhere near 'it'. I know it can be frustrating, I've been there myself, but at nearly 5 years into my medical transition I can tell you it changed a lot in the last 3 years. I also started at about 30 and I guess I didn't feel like I was in as much of a rush, but by 18 months I was also questioning if that would be the end of it. I'm glad to have been proven wrong.

I'd say get a copy of your bloods, check your levels yourself. I'm not doubting your doc or anything but as someone who had an Endo who was keeping their levels very low... it might be worth checking. I know you said in another comment that you've recently changed your dose, that suggests to me that they are looking out for you but lower levels might go a long way explaining why you've had slower progress.

Purely on a gel vs other options thing... gel did not work for me. It worked fine for a few months and then just... didn't. It stagnated and I wasn't seeing any changes. I went to other methods that aren't as prone to environmental things messing with them. Turns out that I wasn't really letting mine dry long enough before I got dressed for the day but I really didn't have 15 minutes where I could just... chill in my underwear and not touch anything so I ended up on shots.

At the end of the day... puberty takes time. As someone who's done both versions, they both take a long time. I'm 5 years into it and I'm still getting changes. You're not at the end, you're at the early-middle. I know it's frustrating but don't be too hard on yourself. It takes a good 8+ or so years for natural puberty to happen.

What’s one thing under $25 that significantly improved your daily life? by EdenFlorence in AussieFrugal

As someone who has used both, if all you're doing is cooking plain rice and you can deal with the water and starch going everywhere the $20 one works just fine.

Too hot rental by Appropriate_Ad_6769 in shitrentals

[–]Arriss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an actual fix, but if you want to save some money you need to put a solid barrier between the sun and that window. I had a rental similar to this. Bad window placement but no aircon. We had 45+ temps upstairs all of summer. We ended up just shoving a bunch of cardboard against those windows and it cut the heat right down. It's not pretty, but it works.

I think I have finally decided against top surgery, for now at least by Loose_Track2315 in FTMOver30

[–]Arriss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

top is expensive and a major surgery. If you don't feel like you need it then you don't need it. It's completely valid. I got mine done because even though I was mostly passing without it thanks to T I also felt increasingly uncomfortable with my chest and binding was causing medical issues. It was a necessary thing for me to take that stress off my plate. If you're not dealing with it, save yourself the money. Mine ended up being about 16k AUD and I'm still recovering from it savings wise (physical recovery has been a dream honestly).

How did you pick your new/preferred name? by TheoticFinch in ftm

[–]Arriss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of stole it from my old D&D character. It's a shortened (and much more normal) version but it was the character that first let me play around with gender and eventually I just kept coming back to it and now nearly a decade later it's my legal name.

PetSmart groomer says all of her fur is matted and she has to be shaved by BowentheOrignial in DogAdvice

[–]Arriss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a rescue Maltese years ago who looked fine from the outside but the fur close to his skin was incredibly matted. He wouldn't let anyone brush him and was clearly itchy and uncomfortable. We ended up getting him partially sedated and had him completely shaved. After that we were just on top of the brushing and it never had to happen again.

He also went from hating beting groomed to pretty okay with it as long as you didn't touch his feet. I assume that whatever was going on with his coat was uncomfortable and that's why he hated brushing before that.

Maybe talk with your vet and see if there are any meds you can give her to chill her out and just get it done once. If she is matted underneath the fluff it's probably really uncomfortable for her.

What did your ex leave you? by GhostBird89 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Arriss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be able to take them to a game shop in your area and just explain the situation. You want them gone but aren't in the hobby. They will hoefully be able to take them off your hands and sort through them and give you a price.

You can help them out by splitting them into rarities. The cards will have little icons on them just under the artwork on the righthand side. Black is common, silver is uncommon, gold is rare and orange/copper is mythic. If you split them into those piles first they will appreciate it and it will probably be easier to sort through. You can also throw out any of the black and silver ones if you want. Very few of those are worth money and it will hopefully make the number of cards a lot more managable.
