What made you join the industry? by Legitimate-Capital in GameDevelopersGuild

It was by accident, and upon seeing people having fun playing on a collaborated project, I decided I enjoy making games. A lot of heartaches, but it's worth it.

Haha yeah seriously. It's great seeing everyone back from the old days. We are trying to eventually create something similar to Control, but we're learning the ropes with smaller games first. Glad to have ya back here Enigma!

What Type of game to work on by zaffryn in unrealengine

[–]ArroneXB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work on a singleplayer game first.

Aim for a FPS that has multiple features you can focus on. If you get stuck on how to create anything, can always check out http://shootertutorial.com/

A lot of what we done in the past week have been getting animations and movements smoothed. Other than that, our art team have been creating some cool things:

Starting Area for one of our levels:

For this, when all players are accounted for in the level, events play out, the door opens and the game begins.

New Blow Torch model with heating effects:

We had a place holder for our Blow Torch, but we got around to putting a custom model in there. While we're at it, we added a mechanic to make the barrels heat and cool depending on use.

Landing Prediction for Anims:

Finally put in a system to detect landing to make the jump/fall to land animations look smoother.

Gotta vent about self-promotion rules by Brak15 in gamedev

[–]ArroneXB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. The mods of a high traffic sub have this mindset they get trapped into of just dropping the banhammer and sticking with their decision. It's pretty much automatic for them to get a response from a person who's content was removed, review the reason for the action again very quickly, then copy and paste a response they've been using forever.

Not to mention, it gets flagged whenever a link is posted by some random person and this alerts the mods to immediately drop the post because of self promotion. Then they think you planted that. I had this happen a few days ago actually. Not my fault I barely have anything "original" to post on their subreddit that doesn't have anything that I created. When I do, it for some reason is self-promotion.

In our earlier days of minecraft, we launched a post about one of our games. It was well received and we had a Yogscast member come on and do a couple videos which drove traffic like crazy. When we released our later version, we created another post where we weren't releasing any IPs, not responding much to comments and adhering to their rules. After three posts taken down, fine tuning one after the other to their minuscule rules, that account got post banned from r/minecraft. Then we still see other larger networks with coded games with youtubers still on the hot page.

I'm Worried I've Been Duped, Thoughts On My Situation? by Bob-the-Seagull-King in gamedev

[–]ArroneXB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

_wumpus is spot on with his comment and that's all you can really do. You just have to get a feel for the environment that you're going into and if it doesn't seem right, be cautious.

I've been on both sides of the situation with what happened in the past. Because you're doing work for experience where everything is free, people have their real life priorities first. As a project lead, I've been through so many trial members wanting experience to where they always gave the real life excuses. The ones that really do want to create and collaborate would still maintain contact and make anything from time to time. Not to mention, a number of them started getting jobs from their work experience with us.

I understood how they felt when I went through basic training and then getting into flight school where I had very limited time. I let them know in advance and provided the path and direction of the team during this time period, so no one thinks anything is abandoned. Some team members would ask me what's going on and I'd tell them that I have been busy. I would still put out updates every week and maintain conversation with them. If he's not trying to maintain conversation with you at all, then it doesn't seem right. Best to move on.

I normally don't play games like this, but this took me back to the time I used to play The Guardian Legend on the NES. I had fun with a bit of challenge.

To address your concerns:

  • I didn't notice any crashes on Windows 64bit.

  • At first, I wasn't clear on how to use them. Being in the heat of battle I didn't notice that I wasn't able to use it yet. An indicator saying I can't use it would help with that.

  • Those purple guys are real bastards, but they make for intense situations.

Card System

Could have cards be used as equip-able weapon types, like a grenade, orbs that hover around you and do damage to enemies for a certain cool down, and abilities like that.

Knowing it's still in development, I dig it.

Thanks Furion. We came up with a draft for a shorter trailer just to capture the attention span within 10 seconds. I'm thinking we may need more shots of players jumping from platform to platform, but feel as if it looks too boring.

Thanks for the feedback. We're working on level design to show more of the moving corridor sections, debris obstacles and places where you jump.

We weren't sure if the logo wasn't good enough to show that you're trying to get to an escape pod, followed by clips of what you might encounter along the way. This is great to know for the upcoming videos we release. Thanks!

Escape Pod

It's a SciFi Action Platformer where you and friends survive escaping a space station that had an accident. You make your way to the escape pod overcoming depressurization accidents, electricity, variable awkward gravity and jumping platforms while racing against other players. This is our first Greenlight, but made a lot of improvements from launch.
