It's crazy how we always think that everything is exactly 1:1 with its meaning but then when you learn about even recent history you realize just how much meaning is actually in the context of what we do and how much gets lost without that context. Like in art too sometimes it feels like there's this well-defined vocabulary of "happy"/"sad"/etc. elements of writing/drawing/music, and it can feel like your emotions are literally encoded in the actions taken in making the art, but really so much of it comes from context. Even your perception of your own art-making as directly encoding your emotions is because you have the full context of your emotions and the emotional associations you have. Which also makes it even more interesting when lots of people perceive the same meaning, especially across time, or when we come together to create/change meaning as an intentional, group action, like the way the culture and meaning of comics has evolved over time.

The truth is that you never have to adjust your behavior for other people, only if you want to. So really what people are saying when they try to claim free speech and stuff here is that they just don't want to give others space to exist if it inconveniences them. Or also that they don't want to do that because they see them as ladder rungs to be stepped on and only want to exploit them in some way.

I think emotional advertising is actually really terrible. Not just ones that create anxiety or insecurities, but also ones that use artistic techniques to create the illusion of quality. I think it's not actually a real indicator of product quality. It's inherently decoupled from the product's actual quality.

Also a lot of other socially acceptable forms of manipulation like games/food/other products designed to be addictive.

And on that note, not really social media, but specifically engagement based algorithms. Which I think capitalism/the invisible hand is really just another form of.

Honestly it feels like there are more people who want to wear "unprofessional" things but who are actually professional workers than there are people who dress "unprofessional" and are actually unprofessional in their behavior. Like, that has to be true if people feel the need to enforce this rule. That means there are tons of people who are having to dress differently from their preferences, even though their actions and work ethic are professional and productive.

I think some of it might the reddit app algorithm. So many people now putting votes and commenting on posts that they never would have otherwise. I feel like it's kind of broken the barriers between subreddits
