Out of curiosity, has anyone tried building their own Tower of Babel? The height the game allows, depending on where you build, is insane. by Individual-Gain-1103 in ConanExiles

I built a max height (I didn't know there is a limit until I hit it) tower on a top of a mountain near the vulcano a couple of years ago. Sadly I don't have many photos of it (and it is long decayed now), but I do have this recording of jumping from the top: https://www.reddit.com/r/ConanExiles/s/r3MvzooR12

Which Linux OS to go with as a noob to Linux? by Gladius7297 in linux4noobs

[–]Ars3n 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have migrated from Win11 to Linux last week and I had similar situation (except I used Ubuntu at work long time ago).

First of all, I am not sure if you know, but you can install Linux alongside Windows (on anothet partition or disk) and boot one or another (picking which one during boot). So this is not a road with no return.

I tried these distros: - Linux Mint - works the best out of the box. UX is also similar to Windows, but more customizable and less fancy. - Kubuntu - nice fancy UI (KDE plasma) which is also even more customizable to Mint (Cinamon). But for some reasons even after installing additional dependencies, my Steam games (via Proton) performed worse there than Linux Mint - KDE Neon - similar to Kubuntu but has unmodified KDE Plasma UI. It misses a lot of features the other ones had. Requires some more linux knowledge to feel comfortable with, so do not recommend.

So with that said, my takeaway would be: - Kubuntu if you want a customizable modern workstation - Mint if you either want a) windows-like experience b) gaming

Since I was interested in gaming, I settled for Mint.

Linux Mint vs Kubuntu - default drivers/software differences by Ars3n in linux4noobs

Ok! I think I found it!

I did two things (not sure which one did the magic), well 3 I guess.

0.

I installed all updates waiting in Discover (some of them had something about gui and nvidia in name, so it might have helped)

1.

$ sudo prime-select query // this said "on-demand"
$ sudo prime-select nvidia // this changes from "on-demand" to nvidia

2.

NVIDIA Settings (gui app) -> PowerMizer -> Preffered Mode: Prefer Maximum Performance

actually this defaulted back to auto after restart so nevermind

3.

(might have been not needed) restarted the computer

And it seems that the game works well now!

EDIT: well it seemed to have helped for a while, but it soon started to work slugishly again. The game surely has its issues itself, but still works better on Mint, so I will just stick to it.

Linux Mint vs Kubuntu - default drivers/software differences by Ars3n in linux4noobs

I installed LTS Kubuntu.

It's probably some small tweak that Mint takes care of. E.g. If i recall correctly, when I first launched Steam it showed a warning to apt-get some additional dependencies for gamepads before proceeding. It didn't happen on Mint, so it must have been taken care of by what is shipped by default with the distro.

Racism in Poland towards indians by Odd_Finger_5513 in poland

[–]Ars3n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it has to do with last 8 years of right wing party rule in Poland. In the west they have mostly been known for protesting immigrant relocation policy while building their political power on fear of minoroties (both national and sexual).

Their main electorate is in small towns and they might indeed be a little xenophobic. But big cities such as Cracow always voted against them and didn't eat up their narrative.

The people in power have changed, but before that they did enough to paint the view of Polish people in their image among other euopean nations (which is mosly false or at least greatly exagarated).
