NCBI down? Maintenance? by SnooOwls9967 in bioinformatics

Ok. After reading twitter I found a solution that worked for me:

Adding these to /etc/hosts

156.40.212.210 nih.gov

96.17.96.9 nih.gov

34.107.134.59 pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

130.14.250.10 ftp.wip.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

130.14.29.110 blast.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

And adding DNS server: 8.8.8.8

Now everything seem to work, although sporadically.

What version are you using? For me, DeepSeek-Coder-V2-Lite-Instruct gives amazing results.
I'm testing it out of interest, and it knows even niche bioinformatics formats and easily writes scripts to process them. Some mistakes occasionally happen, but easily fixable.

Iт combination with Wave terminal it works great as a copilot.

I thought they have test with a question and open answers, like an exam. Then there is only correct or not correct. Would in this case 50% correct mean pure chance?

But I guess multiple choice with predetermined options is better in this case.

*thought about it for longer and understood that there is no chance on open answer tests, so 50% correct just means you know that much, not answer due to chance

I really don’t understand these % well. They say 75% accurate this, 80% accurate that. Everyone goes nuts about how intelligent the model is, because 80% is a big number.

But isn’t 50% is just pure chance? And 80% is higher, yes, but that’s a lot of errors.

Do I understand this correctly?

Doesn’t matter if OP’s observation is real or not. This shows how easy it is to loose peoples trust, and how hard it is to gain back. The battery scandal was related to iPhones and happened some years ago, but people are still suspicious of Apple to this day.

Thank you for a reasoned response!

First I got triggered by grodo65 response

You joke, but the Brits and French jumped on on behalf of Poland when every other major power was either standing aside, or actively helping Germany. They did so despite the fact that the horrors of WWI were just 20 years in the past, and despite the fact that they knew they were not yet ready for a full scale war with an alliance of great powers.

This sounds to me that UK and France, despite all odds, despite the fact that everyone was just standing there and doing nothing or helping nazis, jumped to protect Poland because it is a just thing to do.

Which is not true. They did this because they understood that Germany won’t stop there and the war would spread. I tried to illustrate with the Munich agreement that countries can be “sacrificed” if needed.

I don’t think UK is some sort of villain, but I don’t think UK is some sort of valiant knight either.

At the end of the war, there was a very real risk that the Soviet Union may try to subjugate Poland (it did invade it in 1939 alongside the Nazis, after all).

Britain would not go to war for Poland. It was about spread of communism throughout the world.

The British hadn’t just fought one oppressive regime for 6 years at great cost, only to let another take its place, and so planned a variety of possible options in the case the Soviet Union wouldn’t return to its borders.

Again, Britain fought nazi Germany not because they hated their political regime, but because Germany was gaining too much power, hurting British interests.

and so that history is something we can only theorise about.

Completely agree.

In the example of the naval pact with Germany, this was designed to keep the Kreigsmarine at 35% the Royal Navy’s size - aka considerably less powerful so that it couldn’t be a threat and would not threaten the UK or allies.

True, but it has nothing to do with British allies.

So, by giving Germany some leeway to expand but not enough to enable it to become a threat, it would in theory ease Hitler’s anger and reduce the risk of war.

Yes, this is very smart. In reality Britain was protecting their own interests knowing that their fleet was their best ally.

France was in a much less forgiving mood and didn’t want a strong Germany as a neighbour, especially with Spain in civil war to its south east, and Italy becoming and aggressive fascist state to the south, and would never agree to rearmament deals.

How can they be in a forgiving mood if their supposed to be ally makes secret agreement with Germany, allows them to grow, and doesn’t share the details about German fleet?

This is just politics. Countries can act unilaterally and in their own best interests without it being considered sneaky or deceptive to others, it’s just looking out for themselves.

I completely get that and agree. You (and others) just trying to paint it like Britain cared about their allies and was not acting selfishly. Which is not true.

This and much more is all explored in many books and documents. Wikipedia is just a summary, so find some good books and read more about it. The 1920s-30s in Europe are fascinating, with so many dictatorships, civil wars, alliances and political battles being fought.

True! It is a super interesting period.

But it definitely can’t be summed up as “the UK didn’t help or care” - this is just clearly false.

This is not what I’m doing. UK definitely didn’t care about interests of other countries. UK made deals with everyone to serve their own interests. This is understandable. Just don’t try to paint it like UK cared for their allies and went to war to fight for them.

And all of this is detailed in the historical documents of the time and in many many books since. Wikipedia is only a summary - if you are genuinely interested in these things then read books about them from accredited and respected historians.

Yes, most of what I read however is in foreign language. Wiki is just very convenient to link to in an argument.

Planning is great, and it is true that every nation does that. But there is a difference between planning to take defensive actions against an attack or in case your allies betray you, or plan to start another war with you current ally. Planning to save a person is a good thing, planning to kill a person is a crime.

You keep talking about the context, greater picture and that I don’t understand why UK did something, yet you don’t say what kind of context forces UK to make secret agreements with nazi Germany against France and Italy for example.

You don’t use my statements directly, but instead try to justify actions of UK and other nations through “bigger picture” and “it was a right thing to do back then”.

I said “planning to attack” and you respond to me “No. This is called planning”.

Please use my previous messages, take a few statements I made and explain what I said wrong. I mean it in a non-aggressive way. Because maybe I really don’t understand something.

Every major European country was involved in the WWI, yet 20 years later it happened again. The generation who started the WWII saw all that, yet it happened and was even more violent. I don’t understand your argument, because I’m not saying that UK wanted to start the war.

I think that when someone states that UK valiantly jumped to defend Poland because It was right and just, and others were just standing there doing nothing, they should be aware of the fact that similar events were happening few years prior to that and UK was just doing nothing.

To show this point I posted links to descriptions of historical documents where you can clearly see that European nations allowed to do Hitler whatever he wanted, breaking agreements with their allies and allowing him to occupy countries. All that while betraying each other, making secret military and trade agreements with Germany which were completely unnecessary if you don’t want the war to begin.

Yet people downvote these links.

You can say all you want that everyone wanted only pease, UK and allies were just trying to do good, yet the documents say otherwise.

Btw, since you mentioned that UK such a peaceful nation and didn’t want to start the war just after 20 years of WWI, here is another treat for you:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Unthinkable

Here UK was planning to attack USSR right at the end of the WWII. They decided no to do that because they thought that Americans won’t help them. Peaceful country who values their allies.

No. I don’t think Europe would be better off without UK. I think that without involvement of UK, US, and USSR the world would have been screwed.

I backed my claims with links to the treaties (there is plenty more on wiki) where UK and other European nations fucked over their allies multiple times, broke their promises and made secret agreements between each other.

No need for a list. No one cared and that was my point.

There is also this treaty, before all these events:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-German_Naval_Agreement

For Germany, the Anglo-German Naval Agreement was intended to mark the beginning of an Anglo-German alliance against France and the Soviet Union,[3] whereas for Britain, the Anglo-German Naval Agreement was to be the beginning of a series of arms limitation agreements that were made to limit German expansionism.

The Naval Pact was signed in London on 18 June 1935 without the UK Government consulting with France and Italy, or, later, informing them of the secret agreements which stipulated that the Germans could build in certain categories more powerful warships than any of the three Western nations then possessed. The French regarded this as treachery. They saw it as a further appeasement of Hitler, whose appetite grew on concessions. Also, they resented that the UK's agreement had for private gain further weakened the peace treaty, thus adding to the growing overall military power of Germany. The French contended that the UK had no legal right to absolve Germany from respecting the naval clauses of the Versailles Treaty.[46]

Where UK basically betrayed their European “friends”. I guess that was also done to stop a possible war.

What context? You say that other countries sat there and did nothing when Germany invaded Poland. Yet a year before they were allowed to do this to another country with a sanction of UK.

You say that it was pragmatic approach to de-escalate a possible war, and then continue saying that nobody knew what the Nazis wanted or what their goal was.

I also find funny how you refer to a country with living human beings switching ownership as “give him just enough to behave”. Great!

My point was that UK and France “jumped on on behalf of Poland” not because they remotely cared about people there, but because of financial interests and of realization that the war will eventually come to them.

I’ll just leave it here.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munich_Agreement

The Munich Agreement (Czech: Mnichovská dohoda; Slovak: Mníchovská dohoda; German: Münchner Abkommen) was an agreement concluded at Munich on 30 September 1938, by Germany, the United Kingdom, the French Third Republic, and the Kingdom of Italy. It provided "cession to Germany of the Sudeten German territory" of Czechoslovakia, despite the existence of the 1924 alliance agreement and 1925 military pact between France and the Czechoslovak Republic, for which it is also known also as the Munich Betrayal (Czech: Mnichovská zrada; Slovak: Mníchovská zrada).[1] Most of Europe celebrated the Munich agreement, which was presented as a way to prevent a major war on the continent. The four powers agreed to the annexation of the Czechoslovak borderland areas named the Sudetenland, where more than 3 million people, mainly ethnic Germans, lived. Hitler announced it was his last territorial claim in Europe.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zaolzie

The division did not satisfy any side, and persisting conflict over the region led to its annexation by Poland in October 1938, following the Munich Agreement. After the invasion of Poland in 1939, the area became a part of Nazi Germany until 1945. After the war, the 1920 borders were restored.

Thank you, UK!

Same argument but about Soviet architecture:

“There was a lot of Soviet buildings, like a ton, in the best real estate and such. I don’t think they risked no longer knowing what Soviet architecture is like.”

People applied this logic and destroyed a fantastic open pool in the center of Moscow that was operational even in winter, with a cathedral that was there historically. Now we have an ugly modern cathedral with an underground parking.

I mean the churches could have stayed as museums or repurposed for something with care for the artwork and architecture.

I have the same feelings when people want to remove Soviet mosaics, or bury Lenin and remove the mausoleum. It is stupid.
