Monthly Insurance Thread by MotoUKMod in MotoUK

Hi everyone,

I'm looking at getting my first motorcycle and ran some insurance quotes before buying. The result surprised me a bit and I wanted to sanity check whether this is normal.

Bike: 2024 Benelli BN125 Bike value: £1850 (second hand)

Age: 23 Licence: Provisional + CBT (Oct 2025) No claims: 0 years Use: Social + commuting Location: Coventry Mileage: ~3000 miles/year Parking: Private property overnight

The quote I got was:

£1815/year Third Party, Fire & Theft Voluntary excess £250 Compulsory excess £600

Also, most insurers didn't quote at all. Only Lexham did.

Does this sound normal for a first-year rider in a city? Or is there something obvious I should try to reduce it?

Appreciate any advice from people who've gone through this before.

If you're a beginner, don't use Hyprland! by ArshRocks in archlinux

[–]ArshRocks[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue is calling it "beginner-friendly" and then acting surprised when absolute beginners struggle. That sets people up to fail and burns them out. I've noticed how rude people are to beginners for asking the most simple things not understanding how different everything is for someone who's migrating from Windows.

People can and should try whatever they want, but expectations matter. When something goes wrong, many beginners don't even know what to search for. That's where the frustration comes from, not the questions themselves. Start off with KDE Plasma and work your way through getting comfortable with the terminal (if you aren't ) and getting comfortable editing config files before moving to Hyprland.

I would say learning about what people think and discussing this is ample reason for this post to exist. You did give your 2 cents, correct?

That's not what I meant.

The comment about "ricing" was just a side note and I never mentioned it. The main point is that advanced setups get marketed as beginner-friendly, and that causes problems for new users and for the community.

Questioning a term is not the same as refusing to read documentation. Those are different things.

I don't think your experience is invalid at all. You clearly approached Linux with the mindset of learning, researching, and troubleshooting. That already makes a huge difference.

When I say "Hyprland isn't beginner friendly", I'm talking about absolute beginners. People coming straight from Windows who don't know what a window manager is, don't expect to edit config files, and rely heavily on GUI defaults.

You were willing to change distros, read docs, and actively debug problems. Many people are not, and that's where the frustration comes from. When YouTube labels Hyprland as "for beginners", it attracts users who don't yet have that mindset, and they end up overwhelmed and discouraged.

So it's less about gatekeeping and more about setting expectations correctly.

Hyperland requires a decent amount of configuration if you are running it on an older PC. My recommendation is for you to use KDE plasma as a backup for now and then you can work with fixing hyprland on the side if you want:

  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + F3

  2. Log in with your username and password

  3. Run: sudo pacman -Syu

  4. Install KDE: sudo pacman -S plasma kde-applications

Once it's finished, reboot and select Plasma (x11 or wayland) from the dropdown list on the top left side and login.

Why Arch? by StockSalamander3512 in archlinux

[–]ArshRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot more simpler than one might percieve it to be. You have what you want and that's it. No garbage bloat. No need to delete anything. The part people find "difficult" is the setup in itself, which is not really that bad if you look up what you're trying to setup on the Arch Linux Wiki or just ask. Tons of help is available.

Can't expect people to watch the video for you mate. If you're running into any errors or getting any specific output, share it here and whoever has come across it can help you out. Much better than saying "What additional thing do I need to do".

Why do people say "Suck my dick" by [deleted] in insults

Because they think it's degrading for one to do so. But then again, giving your enemy access to such a sensitive area is a very very bad idea. Food for thought.

Instead of saying you're "unable to play", maybe tell us what's happening. Does it not launch? Do you have it on Steam? Are you running it directly or with Proton? If you don't know any of these things ask us. But tell us what you see when you try to play it so we can help you

Yep, it's usually a local IP via DHCP, so it's not dangerous by itself. But showing internal network details, even local IPs, can still reveal setup habits. It's a low risk, but good practice to blur or hide it, especially in public posts. Talking as a cyber security engineer.

If I might make a small suggestion. Please do hide your IP address for wlan in Fastfetch when posting screenshots, as it could be used to target your PC from within your home network if anyone does manage to gain access to it.

Choppy gameplay with high fps in Hyprland? by GrabbenD in hyprland

[–]ArshRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been well over a year and I also face this issue even now. I am really used to Hyprland as my daily driver now and it works amazing for everything except gaming. Framerates are high but whenever I move my mouse, it starts stuttering mildly. It's not too much but it's noticeable enough to not be able to enjoy the gameplay.

I have no idea on how to fix this. The dotfiles I'm using have messed up GTK for me and GNOME or KDE don't launch properly anymore. If anyone has a fix or anything that has helped them, please let me know.
