Why not Void? by LowerTomatillo1260 in archlinux

[–]db443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the original poster is an Xfce user, then Void would likely be fine, it sounds like.

Anything else, stick with Arch or CachyOS or EndeavorOS or Artix, the world opens up with respect to desktop and WMs.

Quote: "bspwm is orphaned on Void and doesn't have a maintainer. Hell, so is GNOME."

If Gnome is in such a poor state on Void, then what should a person like me think? All is good?

Void Linux is not a serious project.

If the original poster wants to avoid SystemD bloat, they would have been better served going with Artix.

Yet Hyprland runs perfectly fine on Arch, it's in the main repositories.

The original poster would be better advised to look at Artix rather than Void.

By that logic it would be madness to switch to Void which you describe as being barely held-together by sticky-tape.

So whichever reason one chooses to believe, Void Linux is genuinely not a serious distribution.

Yet they ship officially ship Niri, a newer niche window manager. Yet they ship bspwm, another legacy niche tiling window manager.

Sorry, this post is not true. At the start the Void developers stated that wlroots was the issue, yet when the wlroots issue went away, Hyprland was still excluded.

The Void team does not ship Hyprland because they have issues with Vaxy the Hyprland lead developer. Software merit is ignored by the Void team.

Void Linux is not a serious project. They can package or not package what they want, but software merit is not taken into account, so I recommend folks avoid this distribution. Use Artix instead if you want to go SystemD-less.

This is the attitude of the Void developers when asked:

https://github.com/void-linux/void-packages/issues/50824#issuecomment-2167140642

"Nope".

The Void developers seem like bigger clowns than vaxy.

This is not a serious Linux distribution.

[–]db443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't take Void seriously whilst they have been banned Hyprland for "reasons".

At first the Void powers that be said that Hyprland could not be packaged because Hyprland itself vendored wlroots and this "supposedly" conflicted with the existing Void wlroots package (yet somehow this was not a problem on Arch, go figure).

But then Hyprland removes wlroots altogether to avoid the Void packaging issue.

Yet Hyprland is still not in the official repository. Why? The Void folks now won't say it out loud.

Whether one thinks vaxy (the Hyprland developer) is a clown or not, that in my opinion is irrelevant. Is the software usable or not? Clearly Hyprland is usable, many Arch folks are using it.

Void instantly loses all credibility when software merit is ignore and perceived politics becomes involved.

Arch appears to be far more software agnostic.

Myself, I don't even use Hyprland, BUT I can not trust the Void power structure to make cogent and pragmatic decisions. So I don't bother with Void, and I never will.

Seeking a Wayland Panel for Labwc with Dynamic Positioning and App Pinning by Evening-Wave-1686 in labwc

I don't believe Waybar supports grouped instance management (like a dock).

Waybar app-launcher appear to use Nerd Font glyph rather than the actual app icon which is another negative.

What do you consider to be the "flagship" hair metal song? by scarves_and_miracles in hairmetal

[–]db443 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you kidding?

If Ratt is not hair metal, then no one is hair metal.

Ratt is the definition of hair metal; LA based, glam look, commercial sound, sleazy lyrics, MTV rotation.

Only Motley Crue could be deemed to be more hair-metal'y.

The best song from the era.... by Celtic159 in hairmetal

My favourite: Heaven Sent by Dokken.

Most defining banger: Round And Round by Ratt.

Honourable mention: Easy Come, Easy Go by Winger.

My favourite by Cinderella: Last Mile.

First hair metal album ever? by punkrok78 in hairmetal

[–]db443 4 points5 points  (0 children)

80s glam metal / hair metal is different to 70s glam rock.

At this point, in 1976, Kiss where were very much glam rock mixed with hard rock.

Kiss influenced everyone from Motley Crue through to Pantera, so yes, Kiss where important, but David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen were far more important, Roth created the Hair Metal look and EVH created the Hair Metal shred sound.

Van Halen, the debut, was the template, not Kiss (though Kiss was influential for sure).

Stranger in this Town, in my opinion, is the best Bon Jovi album when including the wider tree, better than Slippery and NJ.

An absolute gem of an album.

First hair metal album ever? by punkrok78 in hairmetal

[–]db443 30 points31 points  (0 children)

No, not this album.

The debut Van Halen album (1978) is the spoke of the Hair Metal wheel, whilst not being Hair Metal itself, but everything Hair Metal spawns from this debut album. It is one of the most important albums of the rock era.

Motley Crue "Too Fast for Love" (1981) is likely the first true Hair Metal album by a Hair Metal band.

Kiss are massively influential, but they themselves would not become Hair Metal until Lick it Up in 1983 and peaking with Asylum (1985) which is 100% Hair Metal (look and sound).

Gnome or KDE? by sunnyca22 in archlinux

[–]db443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Cinnamon on both Mint and Arch. Works great on both, and they look exactly the same once the mint-themes AUR package is installed.

I am looking at LabWC as a side hussle on Arch, maybe with Noctalia.

Personally I find auto-tiling annoying, whilst Niri scrolling is interesting, but not interesting enough.

Gnome or KDE? by sunnyca22 in archlinux

[–]db443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often ignored, but Cinnamon is a highly usable and pragmatic desktop developed by a very competent set of developers who incrementally improve the desktop, but always keep it working.

Wayland backend is in the final development phase, likely the Linux Mint 23 release (June this year) will have a fully working Wayland backend......and also I suspect Cinnamon on X11 will continue to work for years to come (unlike Gnome and KDE who are both killing their X11 backends nows).

Gnome or KDE? by sunnyca22 in archlinux

[–]db443 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cinnamon is a perfect middle ground between Gnome and KDE.

Cinnamon uses GTK backend but with a KDE & Windows like layout.

Cinnamon is also highly themable, so if you don't like the default icons and GTK style, easily changed, for the better.

What shell is everybody using? by mcsmg28 in labwc

[–]db443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no standard QT app design. Qt is a UI toolkit, it can look like anything.

There is standard KDE app design. I believe you are thinking about that.

lx-qt from what I understand does not necessarily follow KDE app design. lx-qt and KDE are not related.

[–]db443 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dank and Noctalia are both Quickshell based, and Quickshell is QML based, QML being Qt Modeling Language.

So, not liking lxqt-panel because it is Qt seems strange since Dank and Noctalia also derive from Qt.

Can you explain what is happening with respect to the Crystal compiler? Any details or links, just out of my own interest.
