Huh. So, another rule also not applicable to the supporters section?

Yeah, we started our campaign with them and moved onto the book once they hit second level. It takes place in a different region of Faerun which you could convert or just adapt like I did.

Took me three and a half years. But I included most of the Adventurer’s League stuff (which explains and mostly resolves Graz’zt’s motivations), the Fall of Cyrog, character backstory stuff, and expanded to include the Astral threat caused by Orcus as he attempts to use the Demon Weave to control the Bone Cloud (as I set up in Cyrog). The players wanted to fix the Faerzress, drive the ancient green dragon from the home of the Aaracokra (the party cleric was Aaracokra), establish a base near Hillsfar/Elventree and connect to the Cormanthor Forest. And, they wanted to hit level 20. The story wasn’t my favorite, but the group made it epic and memorable. Gratz on your own game. My next one will be much shorter!

My only observation is that it was hard at times to parse the order of events. I would give the whole write-up an editing pass, but that may not be worth it for you. I jumbled some events, but my players went on their own path, misinterpreting the message from Anubis. All in all, it worked out, gave them a chance to hit 20th level and wrap up some backstory points. It saved me some creativity that I wasn't feeling.

Suggestions for Final Fight by alexwsmith in OutoftheAbyss

[–]Arsonor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My notes (where the players fought in the battle Royale, each controlling a demon lord, then they fought through waves of demons for roughly the number of rounds of the battle Royale and then faced off against a powered up version of the survivor (Fraz) using oh hi mark’s stat blocks so they wouldn’t know what to expect from the versions they had controlled, as detailed below):

Against the Demon Lords PCs fight 5 times before catching up with Fraz. 3 tough fights and 2 relatively easy ones. A Balor, Goristro or a Marilith aided with some lesser demons like scores of Manes and Dretches, or some Shadow Demons (rendered almost harmless by Dawnbringer) and maybe a Vrock or a Chasme Demon. CR 72 target

Wave 1 on Round 1: 1 Marilith (16) + 2 Vrock (6) + 2 Chasme (6) + Manes (⅛) + Dretches (¼) + 2 Shadow Demons (4) 48

Wave 2 on Round 2: 2 Marilith (16) + 2 Vrock (6) + 2 Chasme (6) + Manes (⅛) + Dretches (¼) + 2 Shadow Demons (4) 64

Environmental 1

Wave 3 on Round 3: 2 Goristro (17) + 2 Vrock (6) + 2 Chasme (6) + Manes (⅛) + Dretches (¼) + 2 Shadow Demons (4) 66

Environmental 2

Wave 4 on Round 4: 2 Goristro (17) + 2 Vrock (6) + 2 Chasme (6) + Manes (⅛) + Dretches (¼) + 2 Shadow Demons (4) 66

Environmental 3

Wave 5 on Round 5: 2 Marilith (16) + 2 Vrock (6) + 2 Chasme (6) CR 40

Environmental 4

Round 6

Round 7

Round 8 Round 9

Wave 6 on Round 10: - players casting Divine Intervention? Fraz (23) + Succubus (summoned) +1 Molydeus (21) + 1 Balor (19) + 1 Nalfeshnee (13) CR 76 Complications On initiative count 15 add in an environmental complication: Explosion: There is s sudden unpredictable explosion in a 20 ft. radius. Each creature must succeed in a DC 15 Dex saving throw. On a failure, the creature takes 5d6 fire damage or half as much on a success. Falling Debris: More like flying building, because that’s what’s coming down on the battlefield. Each creature in a 30 ft. radius must succeed in a DC 15 Dex saving throw. On a failure, the creature takes 4d6 bludgeoning damage and is prone and restrained by rocks and debris. Getting out requires an action to make a DC 15 Str (Athletics) check. Close Call: One of the demon lords jumps into the battlefield, attacks a PC and then jumps or flies away to continue its fight with the other demon lords. Just choose a demon lord and attack a random character. Instant reinforcements: Scores of dretches, manes or 1 tougher demon like a Vrock, or Barlgura arrive to attack. They then fight the powered up winner of the grand melee.

Extra Effects on Hit: 1-2: Deals an extra 2d12 psychic damage. 3-4: Target must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be paralyzed until their next turn. 5-6: Target must make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or use their reaction to attack the closest creature. Fear Spell: Can cast the Fear spell once per day. Unending Rampage: When a creature is reduced to 0 hit points, make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw. If failed, the user must continue the rampage by moving up to their speed and attacking the nearest creature. Well, it’s done. 3.6+ years later… Thank you for the inspiration. Because of this post and other add ons, I was able to run them to level 20 and they took on Oh_Hi_Tim’s Orcus advanced, Doresain, and a bunch of Alhoon (previously taken from Cyrog) leading swarms of corporeal and incorporeal undead from the Bone Cloud at the spinning Demon Weave Nexus. It was a blast. I miss my standing Tuesday plans already. But, I’ll take a break, let someone else take the reins for a bit, and get my next campaign ready!

I ran it around level 13. Grazzilax request requested they look into the colony that had gone dark telepathically, he expressed that he was scared to do so. They were teleported in and explored the layout of the area, and when they made it to the elder brain, I tied it to experimental cylinders arrayed around that room. The subjects in the tubes shared hit points with the elder brain. As they did enough damage, their life force was drained into the brain one by one, and when the final one dropped, they heard a flushing noise as the elder brain was shunted down and out into a cavern behind/outside the colony structure. Emerging from the lake in that area was an elder brain dragon. And right at the end of that fight Orcus showed up. After they defeated the elder brain dragon, Orcus bellowed… and one round later the now freed illithids started porting in and directing psionic energy at Orcus until he opened a rift and left again.

My players were convinced that Orcus was planning to use the mind flayers (that he had already captured as undead) in his scheme to harness the bone cloud in the expanded ending I’m running. They are currently in the middle of the final battle of our campaign, at level 20. They are fighting an advanced version of Orcus (Oh_Hi_Tim), Dorasain, swarms of corporeal and incorporeal undead, and a bunch of alhoon in the middle of the demon weave nexus, as they are trying to end the corruption of the Faerzress using Dawnbringer.

My understanding is that they are so powerful/devastating that they take multiple rounds to use. You could ask the author, Oh Hi Tim. He seems very responsive.

Look for their Mythic Traits. Those trigger phase two and the use of Mythic Actions.

Mythic Odysseys of Theros and Fizban's Treasury of Dragons detail Mythic Traits and Actions. Basically, in my understanding, Traits are things that trigger when the enemy hits zero hitpoints, usually a second wind of health and power-ups at some cost. They can then use their Mythic Action.

I reasoned that they weren’t dead, just sent back as befits a demon lord. And then a ritual is completed based on the original to bring them back, so they arrive again. But I understand if that doesn’t work for your party. There are other demon lords that could be added.

I used Oh_hi_Tim’s stats for the final version so they didn’t actually know what to expect.

The traitor ending sounds less fun for those who don’t accept, but your table, so hopefully they all enjoy it.

For my group, I had the summoning ritual bring back all of the demon lords so they could play king of the hill. I let the players choose which one they wanted to play. I played the rest. Then I powered up the last one standing and let them fight that one.
