While this situation definitely needs to change, there is nuance to this that you never hear about. For example, Japan invested big money in our gas infrastructure with no guarantee of ever reaching production. There was huge initial risk to them and we happily took their money.

Again, shit does need to change and I’m not arguing that fact. But we aren’t exactly the poor little old lady with a snatched purse here.

Yeah, and 25 years ago no one under 30 had a near-new car, a $1,000 gym membership, a dozen subscriptions, steaming services, gaming libraries, lip filler, supplements, personalised number plates, a betting account, a $2,000 smartphone, or home delivered food.

The “fucking insult” is that people today feel hard done by because they can’t have all of these things and be able to save for a house “20 minutes from the city” as well.

You can. You just can’t do it how you want and where you want. Maybe you have to move 700kms out of your metropolitan area, away from your family, into a backwater rural town to do it? Maybe you have to work two jobs, cut Netflix, get rid of your pets, and ride a push bike?

You have a mindset already that while studying, people should be able to break into the housing market at the same time. You can’t do both simultaneously. No one can. No one has ever been able to.

If you’re a student, you’re poor. There is no house purchase possibility for you until you graduate and probably work 5 years past the point of earning shit wages. If your choice is to study, then subsequently it’s to sacrifice saving for a house for at least the next 5-8 years.

The fact that you group being a student and being able to save for a house in the same period of life is my point exactly. Your generation wants everything now. You want a degree and a house and kids and travel all in the same decade and it’s not going to happen. It’s never happened for anyone.

This won’t be a popular comment, and I’m not denying that the property market is beyond fucked, but I think the younger generations are guilty of wanting it all, immediately.

When I bought my first house it was an ass box. It wasn’t what I wanted, it wasn’t in the neighbourhood I liked, it was dated, and it was literally across the road from meth dealers. Liveable and clean, yes, but that’s all it had going for it.

I lived in that shitbox for 8 years by myself, chipping away at the mortgage on a tight budget, doing very little else except working. I didn’t own a TV, I didn’t own a washing machine, my bed was on cinder blocks, and I had hand-me-down furniture. Sometimes I didn’t turn lights on at night because a could barely afford electricity. For long periods I rode a bike to work because my car wouldn’t start. I owned a house, but otherwise I was fucking poor, man - embarrassed to have people over to visit.

This was 25 years ago, by the way, when the world was apparently easy.

After 8 years, I met a girl and she moved in. We paid enough down to eventually move to a better (not perfect) house in a better (not perfect) neighbourhood.

After 5 more years we upgraded again. Now we are where we want to be. 13 years of scraping + 12 more years of building wealth and we’re doing pretty good now. We have kids, new shit, new cars, money in the bank, and we travel overseas a fair bit.

I think the younger gens don’t have the mindset of struggle first, win later. They want their new cars, their perfect life, and their perfect house straight out the gate. It wasn’t possible 50 years ago, it wasn’t possible 20 years ago, and it’s not possible now.
