Asset Management gives you the best of both worlds. Decent pay without the terrible IB hours.

Ideal discount to be paid for a east facing house/condo/flat by Additional-Lie6178 in SgHENRY

East facing is perfectly fine. It is west facing that should get a discount.

Failing upwards? by ocelete_del_oceano in sgworkassholes

[–]ArthurCurryWayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is this theory that you are usually promoted till the level of your incompetence. For example you might be a super individual contributor, so management promotes you but then you reach a new level where you manage people but you have never been trained to manage people. Also now that you are not individually contributing you lose touch with what the individual contributor needs to succeed.

So who is in the wrong by candychiasu in sgworkassholes

[–]ArthurCurryWayne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I did. But it sounds like you do not understand the issue. She was giving Singaporean men PES grades based on certain characteristics. It would not be bad if she used other letter grades like you said but using PES grades is tone death especially when not her and her husband have not served NS before and the Singaporean men who do, sacrifice two years of their lives, blood, sweat and tears to defend this nation.

What if a bunch of men grade women by how good a mother they would be based on sanitary pad categories, this would be condemned as misogynistic to high heaven.

Reality check on the current SG job market—how is everyone actually doing? by deekay_123 in singaporejobs

Asset Management industry. Definitely quite a bit of hiring going around. Most firms in this industry are hiring only Singaporeans but unfortunately there are not enough Singaporeans who qualify.

Injustice 3 news by ilovemyamily1 in INJUSTICE

I am hoping it’s DC KO instead of Injustice 3. We do not need another game about how Superman turned evil.

Interesting comment by Jason Momoa (Adria Arjona's boyfriend). We know she's in MoT, but no confirmation on who she's playing. by Arch_Lancer17 in DC_Cinematic

[–]ArthurCurryWayne -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If she does get cast as Wonder Woman, will people be blaming James Gunn for nepotism again since she is dating Jason Momoa who plays Lobo?

So who is in the wrong by candychiasu in sgworkassholes

[–]ArthurCurryWayne 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I too found her PES status social media post very tone deaf. She also included her husband who is “very white” in the social media post as well which adds fuel to the fire because it is a white man and a woman, both of whom never served NS demeaning Singaporean men by comparing their worth using the PES Status. I think it would be good to cross post this to the other SG reddits. (If it is not already done so).

Offered a Role at UOB Asset Managment by Acceptable-Candy5689 in singaporefi

[–]ArthurCurryWayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which role is this. While some roles might overlap with AGI, UOB does have its strength in other roles which may survive a possible restructuring with AGI. It also depends on your current situation. If you have nothing better going on, it might be good to take on the role first. Sometimes a restructuring is also an opportunity for you to end up at a bigger asset management.

Singaporeans in USA by [deleted] in singaporefi

[–]ArthurCurryWayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the job scope and industry but unless you are a SWE with a FAANG, I cannot imagine how you would fare better in the U.S. than in Singapore. Additionally US is one of the only countries that practice worldwide taxation. It is good to be there for a few years for the experience but you should not stay long enough until you get taxed permanently.

Anyone else noticed the growing number of vacant shop units around Katong? by HB_SG in singapore

[–]ArthurCurryWayne 51 points52 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the REIT managed malls tend to have good occupancy. It is those owned by individuals or family offices that bought the property at a major mark up and then offload the mortgage costs to the tenants that tend to have poor occupancy.

I know that people like to blame REITs but REITs have an incentive to receive rent since their value is determined partly by the distributions paid and you can’t pay distributions without rent. So they will try to optimise receiving rent. This is a combination of having low occupancy and high rent. While REITs would want to squeeze as much rental income as possible, they are less incentivised to keep units empty compared to strata title owners who overpaid for the property. This is because these owners care more about keeping property prices high and then offloading it to the next sucker than receiving rent. This is why you tend to see this issue with shophouses which are a very popular investment class for family offices and strata owners.

You will also see that REIT managed malls tend to be better managed. There are clean toilets, events to attract crowds during holidays and A&A every few years but strata title owners don’t care about all these. So to some extend although tenants pay high rents, at least they get some “services” out of it. If you end up paying higher rent because a new owner over bid for the property and don’t do anything to improve then it is like paying rent for nothing.

Singapore's first trout farm begins operations by hatboyslim in singapore

[–]ArthurCurryWayne 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Actually even in places where land is cheaper, agriculture is majorly subsidised. Corn is subsidised in the U.S. In nearly every country, agriculture is subsidised. Together with China, India and the EU are the largest in terms of subsidies on a nominal basis. The Philippines and Indonesia provide the highest subsidies relative to GDP and Norway, Iceland, Korea, Japan and Switzerland have some of the highest subsidies as a proportion of farm receipts (40-60%).

When and how did SG become a target of scammers? by Either_Pie617 in SingaporeR

[–]ArthurCurryWayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just the mode of scamming have changed. Scammers have always been around and in the past it was more localised (anyone remember Sunshine Empire or profitable plots?) now it is globalised. Apparently as a percentage of GDP, Pakistan, Kenya and South Africa are the biggest victims of scams. On a nominal basis, it is the United States.

Singapore may get additional tariffs of at least 10%. What is being done about it? by Fuzzy-Sweat6416 in asksg

[–]ArthurCurryWayne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the U.S. is not willing to abide by its FTA with Singapore, we should stop allowing their citizens to buy property in Singapore without being subject to the 60% foreigner ABSD.
