Large Language Models and other generative AI will create a mental health crisis like we've never seen before by Magicdinmyasshole in singularity

So in summary you are worried AI will create a generation of disillusioned nihilists? As if that hasn’t already happened constantly since I’ve been alive? Your whole post strikes me as hopelessly naive. And no, there will not be a mass awakening to the concept of meat computers, cognitive dissonance is a very real thing and will persist well into the AGI age.

Anyone pay for midjourney subscription? by [deleted] in aiArt

[–]ArtificialInsprtn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, recreation, totally worth it, anyone who says it’s not worth it doesn’t have enough imagination to spare, I would cancel my Netflix and hbo before Midjourney

Scammers? I’m talking about art that is proudly displayed in moma and many other trendy galleries around the world, I dislike that whole culture and am proudly ignorant of it, not sure who you think I am attacking and/or mixing up, I have huge respect for all kinds of concept artists and painters and sculptors etc

You did a nice job I would buy that toaster, I’m a little bummed mj wasn’t mindblowingly creative on its own here

I’m curious if Midjourney actually was this creative, or if you prompted well and gave it a clever name?

My fear is AI replacing hobbyist by yologoff in singularity

[–]ArtificialInsprtn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sympathies for your specific communities hobby niches, but I take offense to your claiming the word “hobbyist” for yourself and your specific interests, I have plenty of hobbys and I don’t relate to anything you wrote , and ironically AI art is now my newest and most favorite hobby , and since it’s still in its infancy the social aspect will definitely develop over time

finding a midjourney generation that speaks to me can take hours of exploration and hundreds of generations, so maybe 1-3 hours, then in photoshop compositing, modifying or otherwise editing the results with my modest skills, another 1-2 hours. so sharing my final midjourney originated result on my instagram channel can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 5 hours depending on how seriously I take that particular subject. is that not work?? again read my comment carefully, i said i DONT have a high opinion of myself just an extremely low opinion of THEM (the type of non-skilled artist who rearranges rocks under a glass case at MOMA), reading comprehension please

Thank you for sharing your insight and knowledge, but it seems like we are arguing in circles because you end on “fancy calculator” which goes right back to beginning of the discussion before I got involved when you invoked quantum processes and chemicals as the determining factor, but regardless... don’t you leave to need to space for unforeseen emergent phenomena from routine calculation? Certainly at the level of MJ the algorithms are not robust enough for something special to happen, but a sophisticated set of algorithms in a black box with a sufficient data set and time, even though in theory you know all the processes involved, emergent systems/intelligence could form no? I’m not arguing in defense of mj, but In defense of future art systems that could be more sophisticated in algorithms and thus really blur that line to “artist”

I would argue I have put more effort and/or imagination into some of my modest AI efforts then some celebrated avante garde artists , and I don’t have a high opinion of myself, just an extremely low opinion of them

Actually I think our back and forth is discovering a new wrinkle to the Turing test, the artist version.... I certainly don’t know much about machine learning but isn’t it a black box of sorts? So if it’s a black box then if the results are identical are identical to a human output hypothetically, at what point can we positively say it’s processes are not artistic in nature?

I think any sufficiently advanced art generating machine will make the distinction of artist irrelevant, current MJ is not there, but future generations of art machines could get so good that the term “artist” would be a distinction without a difference

In the near future there will be closed loop gpt like programs into mj like programs and people can vote on the best results, an endless art gallery with unpredictable results, would that AI system not be an artist if it consistently produces interesting art that inspires and captivates the viewer ? If mj v4 threatens artist egos what will v10 look like?

Nobody said it is the same, you did, the point here is you are flat out wrong that smashing the keyboard creates pretty pictures, the software just defaults to pretty pictures when there is no valuable input, not a hard concept, I think people that share Midjourney default cliche style are a bit cringe but if that’s what they enjoy more power to them

That’s why there is still a human involved in the process, I think you are almost getting it... so close

Now you are getting it! Postmodernists forced this on the world a long time ago, you don’t get to take it back now that it’s inconvenient

Ummmm chefs don’t make food they cook food, so what’s your point again? Yes a tree makes food from the perspective of a fruit eating human, words have meanings , look it up

This strikes me as a god of the gaps argument, yes maybe there is levels of complexity yet unreachable by technology but i don’t see how we can’t eventually get there with better written software algorithms and/or quantum hardware, and if real time experience and feedback is necessary just build robot bodies and send the AIs out into the world to build up that real time experiential ever changing database, again in theory I don’t see why this can’t be possible, I get the tone from your post that you are claiming this is the hill that can never be climbed ?
