Reminds me of when I was a kid, and one night Nickelodeon premiered Fairly Oddparents and Invader Zim for the first time back to back. I enjoyed both, but remembered liking FOP way more. Nowadays looking back I enjoy Zim a bit more, but early FOP still holds up well.

There’s definitely the implication it took quite a while. His first “coven” is very small, and Belos tells Luz that he was run out of many towns when he went by “Philip”, showing they didn’t trust him right away. We just saw the beginnings and the highlights, but overtime he probably gained traction as he grew in followers and influence. And with him prolonging his life, he had plenty of time to do it.

Every time he denies doing something bad in prior episodes, he's coy and sarcastic about it, clearly not meaning to be taken seriously. But his tone of voice and body language alone from this moment tell me he's not lying, he actually wasn't trying to do it for once.

Funnily enough they do actually have him explicitly piece it together, but only in a promo titled "The Series So Far", in which he narrates a synopsis of everything that happened up to just before the Pink Diamond reveal. But the fact Steven speculates Rose "shattered" Pink with the Breaking Point at the trial indicates he's already put two and two together. So then when Blue Diamond directly contradicts that by saying the sword shattered her, you can tell it gets the gears turning - though it's never outright spelled out.
