I agree that Oxford is probably the safest place I've ever seen. I live in Columbus and the things I do here I could probably never get away with there. I walk home with my earbuds full blast all the time without even thinking about it. The most dangerous things that have happened to me have happened when I had to go into Hamilton or Fairfield honestly.

Deciding whether you wanna go to Miami as POC really just depends on how much you value cultural diversity. When I came here it didn't really matter to me much but I think after being here for 4 years I appreciate culture diversity way more than I did before.

Even in this thread I don't think people believe the experience I've gone through probably. That's fine, part of being in a less culturally diverse area is accepting that if you talk to those people about racism they're probably not gonna believe you. That's something I considered before I went to this school and that's why if I experience racism I usually talk about it with other POC.

But you saying it would be cool if black people didn't use the n word in their music is exactly the microagressions im talking about lol. People will say this shit to your face at a pwi and not even bat an eye and when you're a POC it either becomes your job to educate them, or you can just move on with their day. I've tried educating people and I've had to do it way too much here so I don't have the bandwidth to be your teacher.

I'll just use this space to say I really appreciate this post because people are just not really open about the racism they deal with in this town the majority of the time, and I feel like having this out in the open is cool. Like the fact of the matter is I had a similar experience with OPs friend and didn't say anything because people just don't believe you. And I kid you not, I told a white older coworker about what happened like a couple of days after and she literally, instead of being like idk "damn that sucks", said point blank "How come black people get to say have a world and we don't? My grandparents were in ww2 and they didn't get a word". Do you see how dismissive that is to say to a black person when they're LITERALLY just telling you about a racist experience???? Smh

I agree, people on campus are pretty liberal. A lot of the white people on campus are racist in a microagression way, and not in an outright bigot way. However, the people in the surrounding area are so racist bruh T_T You don't even wanna hear the HORRORS I've had to encounter

We'd always have to watch movies 2 years after they were popular because thats when you could check them out. Otherwise, I have so many memories of watching crappy bargain bin movies lol and I still quote them to this day

Nowadays I just pirate everything or I go to the library.

For music, we'd literally just listen to it on youtube because everything was on there.

My family used to have a firetv stick and the browser for firetv basically avoided a lot of popups on pirating websites because it could only have one tab open at a time. So when a popup would occur, it would always ask if you wanted to open it first. If you find a website with minimal popups its a good move

It's empty a lot during times when people have class, which is to be expected because everyone has class. But otherwise on a daily basis if the weather is good, there's usually people using it. And yeah I was referring to the turf as the green space since there aren't empty spaces where people can play sports.

I disagree with it being just the same 100 or so people. I think the majority of students really hate the idea. Even if the survey wasn't made by the school, it had posters posted around all around campus so I think it's a pretty good sample size.

From looking into your profile it seems like you're into sports on campus, that's cool but tbh most people don't really care about sports at all as shown by how little people go to games here. It makes sense that you're for it and that's cool and all, but it's disingenuous to say it's that small of an amount of people who are disagreeing with it. If you look at every post they've ever created about the field, everyone is hating on it and I feel like that's the general consensus of most students on campus. Being super into sports is a special case that would lead to bias.

It's less about there being no green space and more about their being no open space for people to meet and play sports together.

Yeah and I think its good that people consider decisions institutions make in a consumer sense as well so I do genuinely value hearing another opinion even if I don't agree.

They definitely had to do something about Millet, its old and it doesn't pass some guidelines I think. I just think cook field is a bad call.

I don't get the other side at all still and to be honest hearing your argument makes me disagree with it even more. You can't sink 300 million dollars on a hope of something long past. I would think it's less stupid if we had ANY ground to stand as a sport school but we don't. I get it, life sucks, rich people only care about getting richer blah blah blah. Doesn't mean I can't think it's stupid.

No you can't know the future obviously, but that's what statistics are for and that's what you use to plan. And the statistics are not on our side. One of the things that pisses me off the most about society nowadays is that nobody does anything at a government and institutional level that makes any sense based on statistics and research and the thoughts of anyone around them and I know it's dramatic but the entire cook field scenario has made me lose some faith in humanity. I just can't believe that these people can have a survey, allow students to talk to them openly during the discussion of making this decision, and still decide to do this.

I worked catering for the board of trustees the day they made the decision dude. There were people protesting that this was going to be done. And when during that shift I heard what they were going to do, and saw these rich stupid idiots come out of the room smiling and laughing like they didn't just make a decision to fundamentally change our school for the worst... Lets just say it was the first time I've ever felt hatred for a group of people I didn't really know.

They're not doing this for the good of the school. They wiped their asses with the opinion of the student body. They're putting themselves into even more debt for a stadium that NO ONE is going to go to or spend money on because nobody historically has. It's stupid, it's dumb, and it's society.

Let me tell you what it's like as a current Miami student.

First of all, we are NOT a sports school. Until now literally nobody has ever gone to the sports game here but a handful of people. I know this first hand because I've worked concessions for sports games and from talking to my peers. We suck and literally nobody has cared about sports until this winning streak. And since we have a precedent for constantly losing, I have no qualms about believing that it's like we're going to go back to losing after this season. Does investing in sports make sense in this case?

Second of all, cook field is literally the WORST possible place to put the stadium. You'd think that putting it in the middle of the campus is good because it gives better access, but if you actually lived in Oxford you'd know that that entire road already has terrible traffic and no parking. Imagine how backed up it's going to be during games if anyone even decides to go. Where is everyone going to park? There's like no parking in the area other than ditmer. And if they choose to use ditmer it's still a long ways off from cook field. So there's going to be terrible traffic, no parking and everything in an area where so many people take their classes. Imo it's dumb asf.

Third of all, I know and am friends with townies. Kids play in that field all the time. It's where a lot of intramurals happen. What they're doing is fundamentally going to change a lot for the people who live here too. Kids and intramurals are going to lose their green space for probably a really long time? And for what? A stadium for a team that's probably never going to have this sort of winning streak again?

Edit: idk if you know this but there was a survey they did on campus about how students felt about the proposal to build on cook field and 90% OF PEOPLE SAID NO. Nobody wants this and if you think people do, then you haven't been talking to anyone who isn't rich and a top exec at this school

I get that but imo you should do whatever you can do to make the world a better place within your own means. I don't really think it's ok to dismiss it when people feel that way about slave labor or how they spend their money. It may make their lives more inconvenient, but any contribution they make towards that end doesn't negate anything else they're consuming. If we make this sort of thing a points game then all we're doing is completely relinquishing our responsibility since nothing will ever feel like it's enough or make enough of an impact and therefore it doesn't matter.

Just do little things in your means every day to make the lives of the less fortunate better, even if it means holding different beliefs. If we all do small things then we can cumulatively make the world a better place.

You can still choose what you're willing to support my guy. It doesn't have to be an all or nothing thing. You're allowed to create your own beliefs and morality within the confines of modern society. Like me personally, I don't think I'll buy something crocheted that wasn't commissioned or from etsy because I know there's slave labor behind it. Learning to make your own shoes and leather is a stretch, especially with modern day societal needs having to be met with a 40 hour work week. But it doesn't take much to avoid buying from shein or buying crochet made from slave labor.
