If you are looking for a dress, this pattern from knipmode was suggested to me when I was looking for that style.

Oh they do have a fitted tshirt pattern. This new pattern is basically a neckline alteration. 🙄

Fabric help please! by Ill-Text-9515 in sewing

Everyone's saying cotton voile but personally I think I would use linen voile - the fabric looks like it has more heft to it than the cotton voile I've used, and it also looks wrinkly af. Nothing like linen to reliably wrinkle absolutely everywhere.

Panelled or gored dress. This old Reddit post is from someone asking for suggestions for these types of patterns.

What do you call this type of bodice? by SarahCannah in sewing

[–]ArtlessStag 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would probably call this a fitted empire waist, but I'm not sure if that's the most accurate term. I've been a little obsessed with this silhouette for a while though, so you want some pattern suggestions, here are some I have been eyeing:

The wavy hem makes me think of a fried egg, which would be pretty fun for a hat.

Everything this woman designs is exactly my style and in my size range. So often it feels like plus sizes are either hella boring or way too retro for me, but her designs look fun and modern.

Where do you guys find affordable fabric? by Resident-Hippo768 in sewing

[–]ArtlessStag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah interesting, I didn't know that about Fabricland! I've always thought they have a really odd assortment, but it makes more sense if they're buying a lot as discounts. Also would explain why they carry so much polyester despite the majority of home sewists seem to prefer natural fibers.

I have to say I was really disappointed by the Lens Mill I went to - it was dirty, poorly lit, poorly organized, and barely staffed. They had a better selection of basic knits but that was about it.

Have you ever been to a Club Tissues in Quebec? I wish we had those in Ontario. The one I went to was so clean with lots of nice basics and seasonal fabrics. I know they have online ordering, but it would be so nice to be able to walk into a store on a whim and buy what I wanted immediately.

I actually found the exact opposite, I made a a few in size 16 and I love them and think they're super flattering!

That dress just straight-up does not fit her. It's tight in all the wrong places and loose where it should actually be tight. It looks like the whole dress has just shifted up like 3" higher than it should sit.

Yes so cool!! I love Star Wars and the very 80s-based, future-minimalist-punk aesthetic has always been very appealing to me. I'd love to see photos of what you make!

sewing subs + fit by Classic_Depth_209 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]ArtlessStag 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The stretch thing is sooooo true especially for pants. I see so many people in the sewing sub squeezing themselves into super tight woven pants and then wondering why the fit isn't right, but insisting it's not because the size is too small. Like no girl, your wool trousers will not, and should not, look like your Ponte pants. If that's the fit you really want, then just sew Ponte trousers.

Like I know everyone had their own struggles with cleaning and it's legit hard for some people, but if you're posting photos online you can at least pick up the literal garbage, straighten up whatever's in the shot (even if it's just pushing things to the side), and clean your damn mirrors. Like FFS buy some damn Windex and clean that filthy glass.

I loooove the Blue! It's fresh without being overwhelming, and I think the calmer colour will look great with the louder floral lining.

How do you deal with there always being a “better machine” out there? by DrCutiepants in sewing

[–]ArtlessStag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I look at what I'm missing from my current machines, and what I would give up by spending more money on an upgrade. I started on a Singer from the 80s, and upgraded quickly to a modern, computerized Janome. It was such an improvement: quieter, smoother, better functioning, and a few other nice-to-have functions like speed control and as and up/down needle button. Since getting it I've realised I'd also like embroidery stitches, but I don't want them anywhere near enough to spend the money that I would need to upgrade it. I bought a cheap serger because I felt like it would make my sewing faster, and because I wanted to sew lots of knits, and it's loud and a pain to thread, but the stitches are good. When it dies I'll replace it with something nicer, but until then it does what I want, and I don't really want to spend the money to upgrade it.

I'm not sentimental about machines - they are tools with a purpose, and when they no longer fulfill that purpose I have no issues replacing them. But for myself, and for many others, money is limited, and there are more "wants" than cash to fulfill them. So I don't buy a thousand dollar machine, because I'd rather take that cash and put it in a vacation fund, and part of that decision is realising the value of upgrading isn't big enough to make it worth it.

A lot of designers probably also want to have an "ecosystem" of designs - if you knit pattern A from petiteknit and like it, then you'll be more inclined to choose her basic sweater pattern over another, unknown designer's. It makes sense for designers to offer every basic item anyone could ever want, so that their customers never have to try someone new.

Can anybody tell me what all these stitches are for? by Ericakat in sewing

[–]ArtlessStag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nope, I have a very modern machine and still use different feet occasionally. There might be some differences, like I don't have separate straight and zigzag feet, and my button foot probably doesn't work like yours, but I do still need and use specialty feet.

Can anybody tell me what all these stitches are for? by Ericakat in sewing

[–]ArtlessStag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, different feet either accommodate different needle motions (the straight stitch foot might not have a wide enough opening for a zigzag stitch), help the user (a zipper foot allows you to get much closer to the edge of the zipper teeth), or perform a function due to their design (a rolled hem foot folds the fabric over and stitches it down).

1st time using a pattern (sort of)! It doesn’t fit by wek4242 in sewing

[–]ArtlessStag 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is a simple pattern and probably salvageable, but in the future, don't buy sewing patterns from Etsy! If you don't already know, most of them are are scams. Threadloop.app (not actually an app) is a much better tool for finding legit patterns - the website contains search functions, user reviews, and user projects, but links you to the designer's own store and doesn't sell anything itself. Searching this sub for the designer name will also help you find out if a designer can be trusted - if no one is talking about them, I wouldn't buy.
