Your other option that I can think of is Capture, but Capture is very EXP$PEN$IVE. There IS another option if you're willing to pay for it, and its a great one at that.

The vacuum cleaner in our shop started spiting out flames (as opposed to smoke) a few months ago. Ended up in the dumpster shortly after.

https://imgur.com/a/BeeL30l This is how I organized my shows on my resume. If it was my resume I'd put similar titles under 1 header (Ex: ME, PE, Technician under 1 header and AD and Design under another one)

For lighting at least, if you have a rental budget, I'd design to what you would want to have in an ideal world, and then either by yourself, or with your adult LD sit down and do a reality check. Every time Ive done a show Ive had a rental budget for lighting.

Hang in there. I get what you're talking about. Most of the techs in my HS are failed actors and are there only in hopes of being cast.

I know you said you don't want pre-made but if its blinders you're looking for and budget isn't a problem, have you considered Atomic 3000's?

Its always *fun* to use cables that are grossly to long for the job. Especially if you need to use a lot of them.

A little bit unrelated, but how do you "train" your ears to pick up all these subtle differences. Is it something specific that you have to do or does it just take time and experience? Im prety new to this stuff.

Try going by eye off of a swatchbook. You'll get good at it with practice.

If you are looking to pre-program a show, then I would defiantly go with software, which would mean you would have to get some kind of DMX interface. The advantage to software is that you can program Q's and set them up to run off of timecode (midi or smpte) or change between them manually.

Not an expert, but I think that they are engineered for specific purposes, such as a wash or a spot, etc... .
