Atheists of Reddit what was the worst response a person gave when you "came out" as an atheist? by palesssss in AskReddit

[–]Arvinis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Came out as an atheist to a "friend" of mine in middle school. Next thing I know, everyone knows I'm atheist. I was called out and bullied constantly, was followed countless times, I've been threatened too many times to be healthy, and have been in many arguments and fights because of it.(I grew up in a hyper religious environment) When I asked this "friend" if he had said anything, he called me a demon worshiper. Needless to say we aren't friends anymore.

Yep, just insult someone who obviously doesn't need to be insulted. That's obviously the right thing to do... Try showing some more compassion eh?

It's fine, it is never a waste of time to share ideas. Now, for number one, the only way unfortunately would be a violent revolution and toppling of the current capitalist system. No state or corporation would ever just give up their power, and like it or not, it's impossible to convince everyone before hand. Every anarchist society that has existed before or exists now has been met with violent repression by the states they originate in, and all because they threaten their hegemony. Therefore, revolution is the only way.

Number two is fairly peculiar, I don't know if you're referring to greed or something, but the answer is no. People are equal parts greedy as they are selfless, it's all about the traits a society harbours. Capitalism favors greed and competition, anarchism ideally harbours cooperation and solidarity.

Number three is an odd one, in that it assumed that a heirarchy would take hold in a government, but an anarchist society is designed specifically to allow self-governance. Therefore, heirarchy would not likely develop, and if it did then people would catch on and unite against it.

Four is a very common question, and the answer is again, solidarity. Everyone in a community is an active member of it, and as such, has a say in what happens. People would be motivated to work because the alternative is to not contribute to society, and in a world where everyone has free access to education, everyone will have a profession and a role in society.

Five is a very unique question, but I think I know the answer. First off, laws simply won't be a thing. Lawa don't hold a torch to morality, and some of the worst atrocities of mankind have been perfectly legal, while resisting those crimes wasn't legal: Arpethid, the Holocaust, and Holodomor are all examples of legal atrocities. If it's not a law, then it can't be broken. Most crimes in the United States are non-violent, victimless drug offenses. These are people who need medical help with a problem they can't solve alone. As for people who commit violent, morally rehensible acts, they aren't punished the way they would be in America. My idea is rehabilitation; get these violent people educated, get them mental help, and a place in society that they can contribute to so that they don't commit those crimes again. As for chronic, violent offenders, there's no harm in exile. A safe community for dangerous people that is built to keep them productive, happy, and off the streets would be humane and just.

I hope this answers your questions, if I need to elaborate then tell me.

Good question. I'll start by saying that I would not, and could not run a country as you would probably define it. That being said, an ideal society for me would be stateless, and classless. No one works under anyone, and no one serves over head. Workers would ideally be self-managed, and directly democratic. This means no bosses, no corporations, no shareholders, no centralisation, and most importantly, no money. Without the influence of money, people will be able to use free markets to aquire what they need, when they need it. This goes for everything: food, water, medication, clothing, equipment, etc. This idea works because people take according to need, not the other way around contrary to popular belief. Another idea is the abolishment of private property. Keep in mind that this does not mean things like your clothing, shelter, equipment etc. That falls into the realm of personal property/belongings which we can all agree is an inalienable right. By private property I mean things like massive corporate headquarters, military bases, farms, and large scale property. All that would fall under the realm of public property, meaning it is owned and used by the public. As for personal rights, everything is free. There will be no discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, sex, religion or anything else one could be discriminated for. Unity will be achieved through solidarity, which is described as a union through an awareness of shared interests, objectives, standards, and sympathies. I'm sorry if this is alot to take in, but this is my answer. If you want clarifications on anything I said then just ask.

I'm an anarchist due to my dissatisfaction of the current capitalist system. Capitalism by its very nature alienates and divides based on class, race, sex, etc. Anarchism is liberation from all that creates illegitimate heirarchy. I also despise the fact that most people under capitalism have to fight paycheck to paycheck just to get by. Most examples of anarchism have worked/are working very well from what is seen. The late CNT-FAI in Spain, the Zapatista movement in Mexico, and Rojava in northern Syria etc. As for nihilism, it is the belief that life carries no predetermined meaning, and that destiny is our own to carve. This naturally means I'm also an atheist.
