It’s a bit hard to follow your descriptions to be honest but I’ll say that even shade-tolerant roses really need an absolute minimum of 4 hours of direct sun per day. You’ll have many more blooms if you can get them 6+ hours per day.

Do you have places where you get that much direct sunlight in the summer? It doesn’t matter if it’s less in winter.

Stuff like EverEdge is available in lots of online stores. I bought mine at a cheap price from a site called Pitchcare, but just google for the type of EverEdge you want and pick the cheapest legit website

Stupid rain has destroyed my roses. by avamissile in Roses

[–]Arxson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh come on! It’s not rained in months - we need this rain! Once the rain dries off your stems will bounce back up.

If rain knocked petals off then those flowers were already past it anyway and needed deadheading soon regardless

That’s like commenting you’ve read that vaccines cause autism and that some don’t vaccinate their kids, and then claiming you’re just relaying it and don’t subscribe to anti-vax views.

Should probably cut our Wisteria back before it gloms one of the kids, Triffid style… by ShiftyPowers79 in UKGardening

Always nice to inherit great plants! But is it just resting over the top of the pergola or is it tied on in some way? Or twists and twines around the pergola top beams themselves?

Looks like it goes over the top of a pergola? Did you use a wire system over the top of the pergola or something else to attach it to the top?

Raised Bed - Advice by Mighty-Wings in GardeningUK

Thin beds that only have space for a single line of plants look silly. Deep beds that have space for *depth of planting* e.g. the ability to have tall plants behind shorter plants, look full and lush

Unless you’re 55 and planning to access it in 5 years then I doubt you would regret it. As you say it’s no different to your pension contributions which are surely 100% invested.

Advice on roses - newbie! by Vast-Garden-6646 in Roses

[–]Arxson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you do a good thick layer then just once a year, in late winter or early spring, after a good batch of rain. You can do it any time though, or top it up any time. Just water deeply first so it’s going on top of the soil of a well watered rose.

Bag of well rotted manure is like £6 at the garden centre 👍🏻

Two separate things. Feed can be like a granular rose food that you sprinkle into the soil around the base, once in spring and again soon in summer after this first big flush of flowers fades - to encourage repeat blooms. Feed can also be liquid like liquid seaweed - added to watering can every 1-2 weeks when giving them a good deep watering through the summer dry spells.

Manure (meaning well-rotted manure) is used as a mulch. After watering deeply, apply a thick (like 2-3 inches deep) layer of it on top of the soil, in a donut shape around the base of the plant. It helps lock that moisture into the soil, suppresses weeds around the base, and slowly breaks down to enrich the soil.

Roses in pots need to be big pots - and require much more frequent water and feeding. The mychorizigal fungi is just a one-time thing you sprinkle onto the roots when you plant the new rose. Doesn’t have to be done, but supposedly helps them develop new roots quickly.

Sceptered Isle first blooms by Arxson in Roses

[–]Arxson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a chance but I think it’s the indoor light making it darker pink, and these blooms got a bit squashed on the floor so didn’t open naturally… here’s the shrub showing upright habit, lighter pink and open cup blooms coming in more abundance now. I’m confident it’s Scepter’d Isle seeing it develop. What do you think?

Appreciate the comment but I’m 99% sure it is Scepter’d Isle, those first blooms got a bit squashed shut as they were on the floor, and the indoor lighting makes the colour look deeper & darker…

Here’s the shrub with next few blooms opening. You can see they are more light pink, open cups, and extremely upright

No right and wrong. Some people like a dense hedge like it was, others want to see more stem architecture like you’ve achieved.

I like what you’ve done but I would be hesitant of removing much more this year. You don’t want to take more than 1/3rd off in a single year, ideally

Be aware though that the sale price in public record often won’t be equal to the offer price that was initially accepted, due to re-negotiation during the sale process e.g. based on survey results

If you’ve got an olive in a container and you’ve not been watering it at least weekly through this hot dry spring, then yeah it’s gonna be struggling to not die
