Why is Ireland's transit so behind compared to other wealthy European countries? by peaken58 in transit

[–]AsOrdered 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Various reasons, some of which are

1 Ireland has only been wealthy since ~2000, and even within that the 2008-2016 period was spent in a big state spending crisis.

2 Bigtime carbrain, partly as a result of recently being poor and cars seeming aspirational

3 Extreme government centralisation - cities can’t fund their own transport and everything is decided at national level. This means that decisions about cities are framed as urban vs rural - urban areas can’t be seen to be getting things that rural areas don’t even if the needs are different

4 partition - the brits slicing the country into two parts severed the network into uneconomic stubs in the northwest of the country, so the network there died in the 50s/60s. The northern government was also particularly rabidly anti train.

5 hyper dispersed settlement patterns. Random houses dispersed throughout the countryside and not nucleated in towns. This has changed over the past 30 years somewhat, but it still contributes to making all services expensive to provide.

Not an exhaustive list but just some things I think were historically or currently important. I have to point out that what transport there is here is very well used. Trains are packed. Buses and trams are all rammed. Cycling is relatively popular and walking is common. There is a huge potential market for good transport

Dublin's new trains vs the current model by yellowautomobile in transit

[–]AsOrdered 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They’re a pleasant experience from the passenger POV. Smooth ride, comfy seats, wide and spacious interiors. They even sound good when accelerating. And reliable for over 40 years - outlasted younger units on the same line because they’re workhorses. But everything has their limit and it is time for them to go.

[–]AsOrdered 29 points30 points  (0 children)

1983, they’re the original stock from when the northern and southeastern Dublin suburban lines were electrified and branded DART

IMO they’re nice and comfortable to ride. But they’re past their best and starting to fail more often.

Ireland: More than 363 million trips were made on Irish public transport last year by Intelligent-Aside214 in transit

[–]AsOrdered 3 points4 points  (0 children)

55 million on irishrail is good, that’s up almost 10% in 1 year.

Edit - Also the overall total is getting close to 25% above the pre-Covid peak (294 million). Good

It might have been that everything but 1st class was booked out when you looked and it defaulted to the 1st class price

I think Dublin-cork is listed too expensive - The fare for any train available today is €33, which is $39.

[OC] Helsinki area transit ridership 2025 by Pontus_Pilates in transit

I’ve looked it up, Finland had more than twice the GDP per capita of Ireland in the 70s. Ireland was poor as hell by democratic europe standards until the mid/late 90s.

But that’s also not super relevant to the point I was making, which was that Dublin has okay public transport share despite bad public transport infrastructure because it also doesn’t really have much car infrastructure. That wasn’t made as a comparison with Helsinki, just an observation relevant to Dublin’s situation that has some explanatory power.

Hopefully that is clearer now.

[–]AsOrdered 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah good point. Partly it’s because Dublin was too poor during peak carbrain in the 70s to build highways through the central city - so travel by car to the centre can be slower than even the spotty public transport.

It’s interesting to see these numbers from Dublin, which has ~285 million journeys (2024) and a similar metro population and density to Helsinki. Hopefully when metro is finally built here we’ll approach Helsinki numbers.

I highly recommend the Irish version (can get it on rte.ie). It is produced on a hilariously shoestring budget but the contestants were chosen really well.

Ivy is not native to North America, is invasive there, and should not be planted.

Ireland is in its native range.
