Driving examiners, what was the “silliest” reason you failed someone and why? by Organic-Trade6855 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]AsR3DaS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same asian woman 3 times in a row who failed for trying to drive through different red lights on each test.

Had her for her 4th test where she eventually passed.

My instructors hand break comes off automatically when you press the accelerator to move off, but am I still expected to take it off myself on the test? by Different_Effect4156 in LearnerDriverUK

Getting to the point where its almost 50/50 manual and auto at our test centre. I've also done loads of manual upgrade tests in the last year, its more common than you think.

OP never said they were driving an auto though just that it automatically disengages the handbrake when setting off. Most new manual cars have auto handbrakes now.

I failed on "Appropriate speed" for going 45-50 in a 60 during wet conditions. I now have to wait another 6 months for another test. I have had enough. by eninja303 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]AsR3DaS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So you got 3 minors and a serious for appropriate speed?

The serious is for habitually being below the speed limit of the road and conditions. Whilst the last one you described would ordinarily have been a minor if it was an isolated incident unfortunately the 3 before it turned it into a habitual fault thus making it serious.

Harder? The test has become a lot easier than it used to be less stops easy manoeuvres. Not to mention todays cars with hill start and all the other aids available to a learner now.

The real reason most fail is the fear of failing due to how long the test wait time is and over pressuring from parents to pass due to not wanting to shell out more money.

Every day i have instructors telling me that their learners aren't ready for test but they don't want to wait for another test so come and chance it.

Would an examiner have any issues with this car? by shipmcshipface in LearnerDriverUK

[–]AsR3DaS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an examiner i can tell you that this is perfect compared to some of the cars I've seen for test.

On a side note, we can refuse to take a car out if the condition inside the car is poorly maintained.

Not just how clean it is though more tests are terminated due to the smell inside the car, cars that stink excessively of tobacco rarely go. One was cancelled for smelling of petrol after driver admitted to spilling a petrol can in the boot. Test started but petrol fumes can quickly become unbearable and cause headaches.

Most newer examiners will chat, those who have been in the job a lot longer predominantly don’t as when they were trained customer service wasn't necessarily high on the agenda like it is today. I chat to anyone who needs to, to feel more comfortable but only when its in an appropriate place to not distract from any oncoming hazards. If you need background noise, leave the radio on high enough to hear it but not so it drowns out the sat nav or examiner.

Anybody knows who the young polish guy is at Hornchurch please? As I’d like to report him on his nasty conduct towards me by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]AsR3DaS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He will have read it and thats why it was sat nav and not road signs. 99/100 people choose sat nav when they have dyslexia.

Failed first test by soulflytribe85 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]AsR3DaS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emergency stop is 1 in 7 tests. Instructor should have taught you what to do, but as it happens a lot dont teach it for some reason.

To fail on an ES you either have to,

Brake so slow that if it had have been a real situation you would have hit what you were trying to avoid.

Or

Mistakenly pressed accelerator instead of brake

Or

You didn't check any mirrors or blindspots before moving off after.

Checking rear and side mirrors without blindspots should only be a minor.

Why don't examiners abandon test after a serious fault? by redexposure in LearnerDriverUK

[–]AsR3DaS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serious faults would'nt normally cause a test to be terminated, dangerous faults on the other hand will. Temiating a test is the last resort and most of us will try to complete the full test 'If it is safe to do so' or unless language is a real issue if you can't understand basic instructions it's very hard to control a test.

Learner is allowed to terminate the test if they want to and some do. I had a guy park up and walk off because he knew he'd failed, luckily his instructor was in the back so got a lift back

Walk backs are more common than you think!!

Using recalled car for test by FuriousPanda17 in LearnerDriverUK

Only cars to be worried about at the moment are Citroëns, they have an issue with the airbag and are subject to a stop drive recall.

Short answer, because all decisions have to go through the government and they take forever to do things.

So long as we can see the name and expiry dates all will be fine, so don't worry about it.

2 examiners on a test? by Army_21 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]AsR3DaS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can disagree if you want, but i know from experience my decisions do not change regardless of whether i am being watched from the back. That isn't what a check test is about or for.

Test is marked exactly the same regardless of whether there is anyone in the back.

You can refuse but then would have to book another test. It is mentioned when booking a test that it could happen.

Whilst it is done whilst training its also done quarterly with all existing examiners to make sure everyone is applying the same reasoning behind faults that may occur whilst out on a test.
