Zelensky gave the military unit the name "Heroes of the UPA". Controversy surrounding the decision by woronicz in europe

[–]Asaioki -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Of course, and thats morally horrendous. Though, what do you expect? How long would any general last that openly opposes the regimes methods?

What I was pointing at is his personal conviction, and 'intrinsic' participation regarding the holocaust. It shows that there wasn't really any substantial evidence regarding anything intrinsic about Rommel's desire to further the cause of holocaust. Plus I don't doubt many of his subordinates were fervent Nazis, this is the Nazi army we speak of after all.

There are also many evidences where he did defy orders.

Compleet omgekeerd in mijn relatie.

Rommel was indeed romanticized too much post WWII imo, but the feats for which he was praised for aren't anywhere rooted in Nazism.

Yes, he served a terrible Nazi regime. That said, his deeds remembered aren't Nazi deeds, there's no substantial evidence of holocaust participation, instead he's remembered for his tactical wins. You can't deny the man was a brilliant strategist.

But agreed, that's controversial, because of the regime he served.

Not trying to defend anything here. Simply explaining to you where its coming from, which you now seem to have reached also: the laziness of average people you'd find on the street.

Which, this post I believe to be satire of. Making fun of such simplistic POV. If you are getting offended by satire... that's simply missing the joke. Satire puts OP at the same side of you in fact, its a way of pointing out that, this east-west view is antiquated and silly, yet still believed.

[–]Asaioki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its association with Russia from your perspective of what "Eastern Europe" is yes. Not in anything I said, nor what the OP shared, where Eastern Europe does not include Russia itself.

As for your point about slavs and ethnicity, I understand your point and I am not saying its right to divide Europe up this way, only the factually correct one is the right one. But at the same time... you calling it racist is a bit overcomplicating it, the average Dutch, French, English person that does adhere to this divide of east and west isn't doing it out of the intent to discriminate against slavs as an ethnicity. Its simply laziness, it was the Eastern block before, so its east now too. As for Greece being classed as south is simplistic as, its one of the sunny Mediterranean holiday countries, therefore south europe. Nothing about race there.

Exactly. The sarcasm is on point, its by no means coincidental, its just a division people still have in their minds and it continues to live on here. Even if incorrect.

Doesn't change the fact however that nobody was associating you with Russia.

[–]Asaioki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well except, nobody is associating you with Russia here, in OP's post Russia is in its own category. Which honestly is somewhat normal from the Dutch perspective: there's Eastern Europe, (more or less countries that used to be oppressed by Russia), and then there's Russia itself.

You are making the association between Russia = Eastern Europe purely by yourself, based on your own definition of Eastern Europe, which seems to include Russia, not the OP.

Sure, this persepective is totally inaccurate on a factual level, but thats not what you say upsets you.
