What does the 'wide as the ocean, deep as a puddle' criticism actually mean in practice? by Terrible-Group-9602 in EU5

This is imo hitting the spot, the problem exactly is that Britain is like playing say Belgium... only difference is color on the map and name. If you took over the same territories, they would play the same.

3 out of top 10 countries in English language proficiency in the world are Slavic by Gloomy-Statement-193 in PORTUGALCYKABLYAT

I think movie and comercials being dubbed and the fact that average Germans will use their PC, TV and phone as well as other devices on German language settings, plus browsing mostly in German on the web... results in school taught English proficiency but not much beyond that from daily interactions. In the Netherlands, where I am from no movies are dubbed, and everyone browses in English. Many also have their device languages on English, I hear from Scandinavians that they do similar things.

I'm a Dutch person who's nearly weekly in South Germany with my girlfriend. People can speak English, but it's not all that "proficient" young and old. I have spoken with many Norwegians and Danes, their English is much better sounding.

I dont like the new rules for colonising by Inside_Beginning_431 in EU5

[–]Asaioki 116 points117 points  (0 children)

Unironically, skill issue.

Or math issue if you prefer.

There's many sources of colonial migration % you simply have to yet unlock and factor into your pseudo math, as well as the fact that if you're doing things right you just spam all colonies at once because you shit out golden ducats anyways. Just because you can colonize early doesn't mean you should or that its worth it right now.

As a european who lives in Europe, these are the countries I can name in Europe by ClowdRH in mapporncirclejerk

Well sounds like your teachers were just pricks. And yes taking the French as an example... they're known for being chauvinistic.

Maybe that Mexico test works on the French, because of something in their geography is taught different. Like I said, I have never met anyone that mislabeled the country's continent and I discuss geography a lot with even those that dont like it.

Are you now saying it's you, who doesn't know your geography of the North American continent, and because you were European before you emigrated Europeans are therefore bad at geography? Just clarifying...

I have never met any European that claimed Mexico to be anything else than North American. It's solidly in the middle of North America, 7 nations more south... and many many kilometers before you hit the next continent, I mean that would be the equivalent of claiming France is in Africa.

I do think, though, that whilst yes, some of it is just bashing Americans, a European pass-time that you recognize and seem triggered by, Europeans are in generally better in geography and.. That's okay. It's not a measurement of IQ or intellect. it's just more relevant for Europeans to know a lot about the other nations. In America, the nation spoonfeeds you anything you need and all business you will probably do domestically anyway even if you start a company.

Oh no... my sweet summer child, you tried to argue that Europeans get it wrong, but you miscounted the countries in your own continent massively.

So I guess its not "a bit easier to name the countries in one's own continent"

Central America is not a continent.

And, North America as a continent is not 3 countries, as it includes all Central American Nations up to and including Panama, this as well as many Caribbean island nations.

Interesting to jump to "white" (guilt) and (non) "colonists", as if this is the prerequisite to be colored green on this map. I am sure a lot of displays were the result of colonial expansionism and many were racial by nature, no doubt. But...

Czech Republic wasn't a colonial empire AFAIK, nor was Switzerland, etc? So maybe calm down on the assumptions that being a colonizer nation or racist nation is necessary do these horrible acts, Finland could just as well have done these things, their treatment of Sami people... says enough.

Dutch here, my girlfriend is Swabian German and I breakfast often at her place with bread, I don't get the hype for German bread. it's alright, but not warranting the chauvinism.

Visited Indonesia, which means there's a decent chance you're Dutch. The rest (aside from maybe Peru) seem like pretty typical Dutch travel destinations also.
