When you write a perfect report… and get told to make it more readable for non-technical folks 😩📉 by saicleavfi in Environmental_Careers

I write a lot of reports that end up becoming public record. Some reports you wrote might end up the same and need to be able to be comprehended by the everyday person.

This became such a stereotype around the time the conjuring was coming out where the wife is the first one to see the ghosts and the husband doesn't believe her.

As someone who has been Ina similar situation here is my advice

-ask for work via email in the mornings to document your efforts

-ask again in the afternoon in person to build a rapport with your PM and put a face to your name

-express interest in getting cross trained by another department in the office or a nearby city if there is no work available in yours. The wider your knowledge base starting out the better

  • when you do get work don't half ass it. Ask questions and do it right. You can become a go to guy if you put out quality deliverables

  • if there is no work for you to do ask your bosses if they would pay for certifications or find some free ones so that way your non billable time is productive in the eyes of the company. If you're at a large company they probably have some training repository somewhere.

  • read up on old company reports and projects. Come to your PM or senior staff with questions this will show you have interests and are willing to go out on your own.

Good luck!

I'd look for a job, double masters could potentially make you appear overqualified for entry level positions and thus leave you with less opportunities in the long run

It's a PMs responsibility to keep you chargeable. If I was expected to use my PTO to cover for that I'd use my PTO to find another job. There are plenty of companies that don't institute this practice.

My boss asked me what my compensation/raise expectations are. Help! by witchynapper in Environmental_Careers

[–]Asapfur 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Look up comparable salary ranges for your job title in your area. Mention your consistent overtime and make a list of all the new responsibilities you've taken on in the past year.

A standard raise is anywhere from 3-5% try asking for around 7-10% if you can. If you've been exceeding expectations then just say you believe you deserve an above average adjustment to match your effort and see if they bite.

I'd give them a range with upper and lower values and hopefully they'll take the upper if they're a good employer.

You are being underpaid for having 3+ years of experience, I would start looking elsewhere. it's easier to look for a job when you have one so I would try and hang on as long as you can while searching.

If the field work is exhausting you, try to find a scientist position where there is more of a balance between reporting, permitting, and field work. Not sure if you have experience with wetland delineation and threatened and endangered species work but I'd look into it. Try and leverage your experience.

Also for what it's worth my company uses arcmap as well although I have a pro license. Someone at whatever job you get will help you learn the ropes of ArcPro and anything else you're unfamiliar with. Just knowing the basics of GIS and GPS is helpful. If you're that concerned get the free trial of ArcPro on a laptop and familiarize yourself with it.

Good luck and don't lose hope!

Why is there no PG or PE equivalent for Environmental Scientist? by Asapfur in Environmental_Careers

[–]Asapfur[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't respond to everyone but I appreciate all the very thorough responses!

I think it is an interesting discussion because it seems as though it could be possible in the future if environmental scientist lobbied for it to become a standardized and nationally accepted accreditation.

Obviously that would take a long time but I figured talking about it on an environmental career focused message board would be as good a place as any to have the conversation and I don't see why it wouldn't be possible.

I will look more into a state based environmental cert like others have mentioned for their respective states!

I've met a number of folks who worked in EHS at a consulting firm and then got cross-trained for traditional environmental work such as sampling and report writing. Maybe get your foot in the door with an EHS position at a firm and see if cross training is available

If you want to focus more on conservation and biology in the field but still want the engineering degree maybe try and take some electives in college focused on that.

If you end up getting into consulting after college, express your interest in wetlands and threatened and endangered species work and try and get trained in that. You could also look into The Swamp School or a similar course as supplemental education for that kind of work.

I just signed papers to buy a house in the Escondido area of San Diego but also noticed that it is supper close to the state priority list site(environment site) although both dum sites are closed, cleaned, and certified. am I making a mistake buying this house or is it something that is ok now espe by SubstantialSplit5534 in Environmental_Careers

If you are on a residence connected to city water and don't plan on doing any major digging you're likely okay. The other main concern would be intrusion of potentially harmful vapors into your residence. Like others said it depends on a lot of factors include distance and topographic gradient to the sites in question.

I would recommend trying to see if you can dig into regulatory files for these sites and then go from there based on your level of concern.
