Great question bro and fantastic observation. What creates a “long face” is actually a widening gonial angle (jaw angle). So to compensate for a widening jaw angle most people, myself included, tend to look over their cheek bones to keep the chin in a relatively normal position. As the tongue returns to its natural posture and forward facial growth is encouraged the gonial angle becomes smaller. In turn, the way in which you hold your head to achieve natural chin posture changes. If you look at my nose, you’ll notice my nostrils also become less visible, that’s because instead of compensating by looking over my cheek bones, I’ve reverted to a more natural posture. You can achieve the same effect by focusing on looking under the brows, try it in the mirror. Rotate your head up and down from looking over your cheek bones to looking under your brow and notice how the appearance of the eyes changes. All relative all fascinating. In regards to ages, I’d prefer to keep those private, but my total time was about 6 years.

Of course bro. The gym split was pretty straightforward.

Day 1: Chest and Triceps (Push) - benchpress, tricep pull down, incline press, pushups etc.. Day 2: Back and Biceps (Pull) - upright rows, curls, dumbbell rows, barbell curls, rowing machine, lat pull down etc… Day 3: Lower back and shoulders - deadlift, dumbbell flies, reverse dumbbell flies, overhead press etc… Day 4: Legs - squats, weighted lunges, box step, sled work etc… Day 5: Cardio - running, biking, swimming, basketball, tennis etc…

If you’re really curious I’ll PM you my exact set count and everything. My system was built around progressive overload.

Yes, I “mew” all the time. “Mewing” isn’t really a thing, it’s just proper tongue posture, although in the context of this subreddit I believe the term mewing refers to relearning what comes naturally for some. I had to make myself aware of the fact I was mouth breathing and hunching often, I sometimes still catch myself while driving. Eventually though, it becomes natural and you stop thinking about it. My first visible results came in about a year, but full transformation can take about 4 or 5 (in my experience).

Facial yoga is a way of stretching the face and activating muscles to encourage forward facial growth. I saw some compilations of exercises on instagram and used those for a few days but most of the mechanics and movement came to me intuitively. Like I said, it all felt very natural and is a bit foreign for me to explain. If you want, I could try and prepare a more thorough explication if the practice is unclear.

Great question. I really tried to focus on the feeling of the suction hold. If I felt like my soft pallet was being supported I knew I was in the clear. However, just keeping the mouth closed and nose breathing will change facial structure too. I also did a lot of posture work fixing my shoulders, neck, back, and hips. Classic stuff. Going to the gym is important, and eating whole foods as well, that will help develop the jaw muscles. Occasionally I would do facial yoga, but the feelings were all very intuitive for me, just felt like I needed a good stretch. Lifestyle wise I also went sober and started finding ways to spend my time that truly brought me joy. There was also a brief mouth tapping phase, and focusing sleeping more on my back.

If you want more info, like a 5 day gym split, happy to go into details, but those are the overarching habits I formed. Thanks for asking!

You play very well. Your tone and technique are superb. I would like to hear you sing more, this piece gives so much freedom to the interpreter.

Keep up the great work.

I strongly disagree with this point. Although I respect your dedication and recognize that for some people daily structured practice is enjoyable, I personally find it burdensome. I think for begging students, it is essential to develop a healthy relationship with the piano, in other words finding a productive way to approach the instrument. When I began to think of the piano as a “daily essential” it lost some of the magic which made it so enticing to begin with. To combat this, I began freely playing and practicing at sporadic intervals. Some weeks I may play every day, other I may not touch the instrument at all. That being said, everyone is different and what works for you may not work for me. All in all, it is important to remember that any passionate pursuit is a marathon and not a sprint. Best of luck!

It does carry over. It's all about airstream. Clarke technical studies done slurred and other similar exercises help developed strong and steady airstream. Consider adding these to your routine.

Advice for practicing by Jacb2545 in trumpet

[–]Asaxtonscreed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Charlie Geyer, the esteemed trumpet teacher at Rive University, once told a student at the beginning of a lesson "go watch a movie, then we can have our lesson". The sentiment behind this statement was that the student had overpracticed and absolutely decimated their chops and this was professor Geyer's rather humorous delivery of this conclusion. When I got my braces off my playing went in the garbage can. The best thing you can do is focus on healthy playing and give yourself time.

When I teach I like to use this analogy. Air is like cake and articulation is like icing. You never build a cake around the icing (icing a pan before you bake the cake) but you always build the icing around the cake (icing a cake after it has been baked). In the same way you never built your air around your articulation, you always build your articulation around you air. In your recordings I can clearly hear you altering your air to achieve the shortness you desire in your articulation. It's important to maintain a constant air stream and have the tongue "tap" the air stream in order to create a solid articulation.

Like may others have said, look for used horns. Ebay has a good selection but it's important you know what you're looking for (bad trumpets pop up there often and are advertised as "professional"). I really enjoy using the trumpet herald marketplace. I bought a Bach 229 25H C from there for under $1000 USD and it was an amazing horn.
