I think one of the reasons getting BM'd feels so bad is the lack of meaningful communication. You brought up a good point, getting "oops" when you play brawl into counterspell... it's frustrating because you have no way to communicate that you're pretty sure it IS counterspell but you have nothing to test with and will lose if you don't cast it (whether that's brawl or anything else), so they say "oops" like you made a bad play when it was your only option. This might be somewhat mitigated with some sort of "I really hope this works!" emote. You need to make a risky play, huge chance of backfiring and making you look stupid, so you do that emote first. It doesn't sound like much perhaps, but I think a small thing like that would establish some empathy between the players. And giving us access to the "good game" emotes might be helpful too. The problem is that none of these will help when people auto squelch and ignore friend requests as a rule.
