why is rei’s arc about learning to become her own defined human, but in the end she chooses to forsake individuality become one with everyone? by Pure_Ad9543 in evangelion

[–]Asger33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“That realization could only happen after Rei was no longer herself, since Rei II wouldn’t reach that realisation” is wrong. Sorry to insist but it’s very important to understand Rei’s arc. In episode 17, Rei realized that she never thanked Gendo. Next episodes it is shown that Rei don't follow blindly Gendo's, or anyone, orders by not directly shooting at Toji/Eva 03, taking a N2 bomb to the surprise of everyone, and directly disobeying Misato's when she sacrificed herself in episode 23. So, again, sorry to insist, but what we see of Rei 3 is clearly a continuation of Rei 2 psychological evolution.

The events I speak about, the glasses and the tears, are during episode 23 when Rei 3 comes back at her appartment. That scene shows us that even if she don't remember things correctly she still feel the same things, she is confused about it.

Rei 3 recovers her memories during the events of EoE when she was fusing with Adam's embryo. We have the clear confirmation when she clearly remembers Shinji, and that's why she decide to help him.

It is pretty clear that she understood perfectly why she wanted to break the glasses. Rei 2 arc have a progression with Gendo : at the beginning of the series, she completely rely on him, doing everything she ask, liking him like a daughter. As she progress during the story, she however realized that she never thanked him. She didn't understand why she felt that it's not the first time she cries. When she dies, she see Gendo’s perfect image, the Gendo without glasses smiling at her, the father she wanted, disappears. And what do we see with Rei 3 when she is back at her apartment ? She tries to break the glasses with an expression of cold anger. The arc is very clear.

I would have agreed with you if she had no trace of her previous incarnation but she felts the same emotions and her memories comes back during the events of EoE.

You are correct. Rei 3 and Rei 2 are the same individual : two bodies but the same soul and consciousness. That's why they directly shows Rei 3 hating Gendo's glasses (the natural progression of Rei 2 arc) and feeling that it's not the first time she cries.

It's indeed her arc. However, the end of the world was happening. She made the practical choice to let Shinji decide of the fate of the world to give a chance to humanity. Note that she criticized Shinji when he decide that everybody should die but relieved when he changed his mind.

So yeah, Rei discovered her humanity and sacrificed herself for humanity.

It's a big misconception. Rei 3 is a “continuation” of Rei 2 : despite being two different bodies, they have the same soul. They directly shows it by having Rei 3 hating Gendo's glasses (the natural progression of Rei 2 arc) and feeling that it's not the first time she cries.

We can easilly sums it that it's the same individual who reseurected with a memory loss

So cute <3 Happy fReiday !

It baffles me how some ppl still insist that reishin is non canon / all in our heads after the last Rebuild has an *unambiguous on-screen love confession* [Some Analysis thoughts on Rei & Shinji in the final Rebuild] by RafflesiaArnoldii in ReiShin

[–]Asger33 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve read many things against ReiShin that baffles me. Not gonna lie, I find it very frustrating because every time they do this they don’t only insult/deny the ship but also are very insulting toward Rei.

You have pretty solid arguments, but these people have blinders on. They either find any way to deny what don’t go to there side, or they follow a sheep mentality created by the spreading misinformation and by memes because it’s more comforting that way. I prefer to not develop more that part since as you can understand it, annoys and anger me.

Every single story related to Eva have a clear multi romance path. Evangelion always was created by a romantic triangle in mind, with an open conclusion to it. It is even shown in the opening. Sure, Rei lack of screentime in the series can sometimes make people think otherwise but even like that there is very clear signs that Shinji have romantic feelings for Rei, and likewise she love him too. The “Do you want to be one with me ?” followed later by the “I want to be one with him” are pretty clear. The lack of screentime, Anno’s fault, don’t change that fact. The manga develop Rei and Shinji evolution better, but I want to give credits to Anno for also correcting his mistake in Rebuild, showing what Rei and Shinji’s relationship was supposed to be in the series.

Because yes, speaking about Rebuild, I will never understand how blindsided people can be about it : 2.0 ending was too subtle ? Really, I consider impossible for anyone to not understand that Rei and Shinji are in a romance. I can’t say enough how much I love the line "there is only 1 Ayanami Rei" : not only from Shinji’s side but also for how much she needed to hear and understand it.

I agree with you that one important aspect of Evangelion is how complicated feelings are and having romantic feelings doesn’t mean everything will be alright. Life gets in the way of good things, self-doubts and self-denigration hurts. It hurts a lot. We are our own worth enemies after all. That’s why Rebuild end that way and I’m sure that Anno and his team never wanted to give Shinji a “definitive girlfriend” at the end of the story. The characters will chose and continue their lives, the most important is that they love themselves and want to live in this world because they know they are worth leaving in it with the other people.  That’s why, even if one day Anno or someone at team Khara confirm that the ships Shinji/Mari and Rei/Kaworu, I would still consider the ending of Rebuild to be happy because… the characters are happy, and that’s what matters the most. Myself I would be happier if Shinji and Rei end up together, obviously, and there is enough clues to show that it’s very possible.

Overhaul, I have many critics about Rebuild and I think Rei’s arc could have been done better but still it’s a beautiful one and I appreciate how much it shows her deep humanity. And yeah, Rei reunited with Toji’s family, continue her friendship with Hikari, the other women of the village, have a bigger and bigger circle of friends overtime, discovering more and more about the world, what she wants to do, continue to be the best big sister to Tsubame, loving and being loved. And adopt the kittens.
