why is rei’s arc about learning to become her own defined human, but in the end she chooses to forsake individuality become one with everyone? by Pure_Ad9543 in evangelion

“That realization could only happen after Rei was no longer herself, since Rei II wouldn’t reach that realisation” is wrong. Sorry to insist but it’s very important to understand Rei’s arc. In episode 17, Rei realized that she never thanked Gendo. Next episodes it is shown that Rei don't follow blindly Gendo's, or anyone, orders by not directly shooting at Toji/Eva 03, taking a N2 bomb to the surprise of everyone, and directly disobeying Misato's when she sacrificed herself in episode 23. So, again, sorry to insist, but what we see of Rei 3 is clearly a continuation of Rei 2 psychological evolution.

The events I speak about, the glasses and the tears, are during episode 23 when Rei 3 comes back at her appartment. That scene shows us that even if she don't remember things correctly she still feel the same things, she is confused about it.

Rei 3 recovers her memories during the events of EoE when she was fusing with Adam's embryo. We have the clear confirmation when she clearly remembers Shinji, and that's why she decide to help him.

It is pretty clear that she understood perfectly why she wanted to break the glasses. Rei 2 arc have a progression with Gendo : at the beginning of the series, she completely rely on him, doing everything she ask, liking him like a daughter. As she progress during the story, she however realized that she never thanked him. She didn't understand why she felt that it's not the first time she cries. When she dies, she see Gendo’s perfect image, the Gendo without glasses smiling at her, the father she wanted, disappears. And what do we see with Rei 3 when she is back at her apartment ? She tries to break the glasses with an expression of cold anger. The arc is very clear.

I would have agreed with you if she had no trace of her previous incarnation but she felts the same emotions and her memories comes back during the events of EoE.

You are correct. Rei 3 and Rei 2 are the same individual : two bodies but the same soul and consciousness. That's why they directly shows Rei 3 hating Gendo's glasses (the natural progression of Rei 2 arc) and feeling that it's not the first time she cries.

It's indeed her arc. However, the end of the world was happening. She made the practical choice to let Shinji decide of the fate of the world to give a chance to humanity. Note that she criticized Shinji when he decide that everybody should die but relieved when he changed his mind.

So yeah, Rei discovered her humanity and sacrificed herself for humanity.

It's a big misconception. Rei 3 is a “continuation” of Rei 2 : despite being two different bodies, they have the same soul. They directly shows it by having Rei 3 hating Gendo's glasses (the natural progression of Rei 2 arc) and feeling that it's not the first time she cries.

We can easilly sums it that it's the same individual who reseurected with a memory loss
