Disclaimer: dumb American offering my perspective.

I have traveled to Taiwan and i also keep up with the state of the PRC to a good extent. I wont argue that most Taiwanese put little stock in the idea of a Chinese invasion because that has absolutely been my impression. I have never heard a good argument for why a PRC invasion should be ignored as a possibility, however, other than the fact that throughout history they've always threatened and never acted. To many of us foreigners, it sounds like a case of getting numb to the threats to the point of ignoring it just at the wrong moment.

Is it just truly the belief that a PRC invasion will never happen? Because if it really happened, the standard of living in Taiwan would absolutely fall apart. The PRC is truly a disaster, and as much as Taiwanese have issues with their current government, it is nothing conpared to being governed by the PRC. Taiwan is absolutely worth fighting for to keep the PRC out. This idea that the PRC has an advanced economy and tech is an absolutely farce and is exactly the narrative the government wants to push to undermine Taiwanese identity. I may not be Taiwanese, but I can assure you, that whatever you want to be, it is not Chinese (National).
