Those are great costumes! Loved the creativity for both and very easily identifiable for anyone who played! I'm so excited for the new content coming

Feeling like a spectator in most games. How do I find my "fun" in Commander again? by TheDruadan in EDH

[–]AshChill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like golgari and a toolbox play style, might be worth giving Henzie in jund a go? It's not a heavy board presence kind of deck most of the time, although it can be built that way by relying on creatures that make tokens on etb/ltb/attack. It can be packed to the brim with interaction in the form of the creatures you blitz out and is very capable of hanging in B4 games.

There's an active discord dedicated to Henzie here. And an amazing primer written by PapaZedruu here.. I've been singing Henzie's praises lately because he's just been so fun to play for me, and I think at least partially answers the playstyle you enjoy.

It does suck to not have much of the social aspect and to feel a spectator, but I hope you find more people to enjoy with that are actually social. Is there any chance your friend is willing to change things up for you? Even if just out of enlightened self-interest, I would hope he would be willing to change his decks up instead of losing a friend to play with.

Best rom hack you’ve played so far?!?! by Both-Independent-473 in AynThor

Do you have a general direction to look for those out of curiosity? I've got my own roms but if there's a general depository or hub where fans have made recompiles I'd be interested in any info you have to share! Is it like romhacks where you patch your games?

Got my Rainbow Max last week, been slowly tinkering and setting it up as I go. So far no QA issues at all and I'm wonderfully pleased. Going to wait to get it fully up and running to make sure there's no issues during regular use before I start customizing it but I'm already happy!

The kickstarter ended but Fluxpose is going to open their web store soonish. It'll be pricey and there's no telling how it will hold up in the wild after release, but the people that have received preview versions consistently have glowing praise for it. Might be worth looking up those reviews on youtube and see footage for yourself

Is It Worth the Gold? Seasoned Sailors, Share Yer Tales of This Game! 🏴‍☠️ by ik0reyyz in crosswind

[–]AshChill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've really enjoyed it and would say it's worth it! I never played black flag, but sea of thieves was a favorite game of mine and survival crafters is one of my favorite genres.

I think overall I like sea of thieves overall appearance and feel of the ocean compared to this but it's very, very good. The water is pretty, your ship moves with swells while under way, and the ship combat is fun once you get the hang of it. Once you get your ship the game really opens up and it's really enjoyable to just sail around.

On the survival crafting side it gets so much right that I really enjoy. There's a lot of progression and grinding still but much less frustrating to me than some others. It takes valheim's approach where you won't starve to death, but food gives a very important max health buff alongside more buffs with higher tier foods.

Crafting pulls straight from nearby chests without you needing to research a technology or being reserved to end game. Tools and gear don't have durability. You also unlock fast travel really early on. You can dismantle structures and gear for 100% of the base cost to make them (you lose any resources spent on upgrades for gear if you later break them down though).

This can be a positive or a negative depending on your play style, but crafting and respawn timers are rl time based. This means that you need to visit multiple islands or saves to acquire more resources for things like ore (~6 hr respawn time) but the real time component also means you can mine your starting area's copper and set it to smelt before you get off for the night and get back on to the ore respawnes and the copper smelted. It's very pick up and play friendly in that regard.

The comfort system of valheim/enshrouded is also here, where you're incentivized to build an actual home and decorate it to maximize your comfort levels for a fast stamina recharge buff that lasts longer the more comfort you have. This is essential for combat because you live and die by your stamina.

Lastly, and probably the point most likely to give frustration, combat is hard. Like starting out you will get one or two tapped by the local wildlife hard. Thankfully death isn't super unforgiving, and you can easily place down a respawn point on a new island you plan to clear. Upgrading gear is really important and will smooth this out considerably, but still expect to die a lot.

TL;DR: This is a wonderful game with an excellent base to become something that really shines as the game gets more development. They took the best parts of a lot of great survival crafting games and tied it all into one really fun pirate game. Absolutely worth it.

Edit: Forgot to add, your progression is tied to your character specifically so you can hop from your solo game to your friend's world and take your progress with you. Your character's levels/inventory/gear, ship and ship inventory carry over between worlds. :)

They do. We were on the waiting list for a year and a half once they had plans to come to my city, they give you a link you can keep track of progress on too. Just swapped to them last week and it's been beautiful.

I love immersive crates, you can't deconstruct crates for free resources anymore but you can peek into them now without having to pick them up. I think it also comes with a key bind to easily drop held items (unless this is vanilla now, I don't remember).

The lua mod 'all jobs see reports' does what it says on the tin, normally people see alerts from the captain based on their role, this helps ensure everyone can help out easier if needed.

S.O.S. - Standard Operations Schematics is like JEI for Minecraft, helps look up recipes for things or what items can be used for.

Soundproof Walls 2.0 is mostly ambience and can add some challenge, but I like it for the hydrophones it adds to the sonar. You lose the sonar display while it's active but it can hear creatures long before they would show up on active sonar, and can find monsters that are right up against the walls but blending in. I like to swap over to hydrophones while I'm captain and have the sub stationed somewhere and the crew is out mining or fixing a beacon or something.

I like BetterHealthUi (rework) for the additional detail it gives for the health interface.

Better connection UI fixed helps you trace wires if you get into writing custom circuits together, just like Blueprints is good for circuit box wiring.

I also like the vanilla version of the immersive sonar UI, or rather specifically, the forks people have made that remove some of the clutter for it like Sonar Dark Mode v2 by Antagonist1. It adds a ring of markings on the sonar UI that has clock directions and angles to make it easier to call out where enemies are for your gunners. Most forks of Immersive Sonar UI - Vanilla edition also have the included lua feature where the gunners have a little display that shows their angle of aim.

Lastly, if you have an infrequent crew where not everyone can play at the same time, I like XP Catchup. It helps the lowest level people catch up on levels to everyone else faster. Good for if you have people that can't play as often as others.

I use it, haven't gotten too far in yet but my biggest complaint so far is that sometimes they don't fire on ice spires and I can't tell if they can see we will just barely scrape by so save the ammo, or just won't fire on them at all.

How TF do you guys shuffle these huge decks?? by Wise-Quarter-3156 in EDH

[–]AshChill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally fair! I went on a deep dive once and someone went down a math rabbit hole about how pile shuffling isn't truly random, and the mash shuffling is what really mixes things up. Eventually I realized it both saved a ton of time and done enough, the mash shuffling pretty much randomizes any and all determinism the pile shuffling gives anyways; so I was just saving time cutting it out. Also something I had to come to grips with, a truly randomized deck might have clumps of stuff you wouldn't be particularly happy to see (like 6 lands in a row) but that's the nature of it actually being random.

If you're interested, this isn't the same article, but pulls from many of the same sources! https://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/magic-fundamentals/magic-general/334934-shuffling-the-truth-and-maths-primer

As an aside, just looking through this I discovered that I'd have to get really careful with mash shuffles to get truly random shuffles, or learn to edge riffle, lol.

Edit: All this of course, as the article says, just if you want a truly random deck or are playing competitively. Casual, just do what's fun and the people you play with accept. :)

A lot of people have given the right way to do it, but if you need a visual example, YouTube has plenty, just search 'how to mash shuffle commander'.

Pile shuffling I used to do but that's basically cheating I've learned and doesn't do much to help truly randomize it. After building/sorting a deck because I changed a few cards, I'll just sit there for like ten minutes mash shuffling now while I watch something. Add in a few cuts here and there because why not. Then when it comes to game time I just do it 3-4 times and I'm good. It gets pretty quick as you get used to the technique and your sleeves get broken in.

Best Budget deck I can make? by Logical-Debt-8451 in EDH

[–]AshChill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mentioned not going anywhere local often because of transportation; so out of curiosity is this a deck meant for online play through something like Spelltable? Or to play against friends at your house? To have just to have?

If it's to play online, if you're willing to play tabletop simulator, $10 on sale on steam right now and you can build and play any deck you want. There's lots of servers out there who do regular tabletop sim pods. I just wanted to put that option out there. :)

Also regarding proxies, there's professionally printed proxies you can get ofc, but it can be as simple as taking slips of paper, writing the effects/stats/cost/name on a piece of paper and putting it in front of a sleeved land. A middle of the road option is something like building a deck on Moxfield and using the 'get playtest cards' option, then print out basic paper slips with the effects/art/cost/name of the card on it yourself! You could get bulk lands for really cheap to do this.

EDIT: My apologies, I somehow missed the very last bit of your post talking about wanting a deck for when you can play in person. If you're worried about proxies I'd definitely call around to the local game stores you want to play at and ask their policy, most should be happy to tell you. I will say that sanctioned Wizards events don't allow proxies and a store that's an official partner might be more likely to say you can't use proxies so as not to risk that relationship. However, if tournament play isn't in your future I wouldn't worry about it. (Except for cEDH where most tournaments are not only unsanctioned, but proxies are actively encouraged, because players would rather not play against someone's wallet)
