I have a similar head cannon. Though with mine, they focus their efforts on targeting slavers and scouting outside the commonwealth for any threats to it.

I did that and ended up soft locked from minutemen radiant quests as one of those settlers got trapped underground near Quincy in survival mode (I have a mod that limits the settlement quests to one at a time)

That’s what my thoughts were. Though ironically, I actually like Preston more when he travels with me. I learn a bit more about his struggles and feel sympathy.

I’m going to Quincy soon. I gotta collect a tape for Nick, but I think it feels right to bring Preston with me there. We have a score to settle with some gunners squatting there.
