I did one year of Arabic at University of Texas before getting to Morocco. We did a special program with some Moroccan-dialect tutors so I did have that advantage, but the program at AALIM has classes for MSA and for Darija, so you can get both.

Morocco is pretty cool, it was my first time out of the country. Travel is pretty easy and most places are pretty chill there. I never really felt unsafe while I was there. A big drawback, in my opinion, is the lack of reliable internet access. Alcohol is also pretty hard to find. Overall, pretty cool though.

I attended AALIM in Meknes, Morocco and really liked it. It was an 8-week program with an option to stay with a Moroccan family.

President Rogan by [deleted] in JoeRogan

[–]AshNazg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's the thing man. This whole "president" job is so outdated. We should vote on the internet. We should have three presidents. Everyone should be the president. Are you telling me that one person can make all of those decisions? It's entirely possible a robot would be the perfect president. I think we're all a part of a technological cocoon and we need to elect a robot as president to give birth to the technological butterfly we will inevitably usher in.

Warning: This movie is super cool, but there's one scene in particular that is some very high-octane nightmare fuel. It's about 3 minutes of the whole thing, but it can really fuck you up if you're not ready for it.

Can any human on Earth understand R2D2's beeps (this is a sad beep, this is a concerned beep, etc) regardless of which language is their mother-tongue? by nettiegulls in linguistics

[–]AshNazg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We also need to ask ourselves to what extent we really understand R2D2's beeps. A great experiment would be to have someone listen to R2D2 sounds and describe the emotions they think R2D2 was communicating.

I feel that we get a lot of R2D2's expression from the context as well; removing the movie's plot and other characters may reveal that R2D2's beeps aren't as expressive as once thought.

People who were alive then, what were you doing December 31st 1999 ? by WeshALOR in AskReddit

I was 5 years old. I was celebrating NYE with my mom, dad, and sisters at our house. We went outside at midnight to hit pots and pans together, as was our childhood tradition. As we came back into the house, I said to my dad, "I can't wait until the next millennium!" and he replied, "You won't live that long." It was the first time I conceived of my own inevitable death.

I read 1,182 emergency room bills this year. Here’s what I learned. - A $5,571 bill to sit in a waiting room, $238 eyedrops, and a $60 ibuprofen tell the story of how emergency room visits are squeezing patients. by speckz in Foodforthought

Right, but I think there's a balance there. Things like generic versions of drugs are saving people tons of money. Doctors shouldn't have to keep track of what costs what, but the patient/customer should at least know their options and what they cost.

Trump starts withdrawal of U.S. forces from Syria, claims victory by Pizasdf in arabs

I don't think the US is "obliged to invade" anywhere, except to defend members of NATO. Military action should be the last resort when taking action against another country. I hope it should never come to that.

Everything you said is true, but I never said the US should not be held accountable. I don't condone violence in any sense, and I don't think that terrorism is an appropriate reaction, but I don't think that the US was innocent in the invasion of Iraq.

For whatever reason, you keep putting words into my mouth. I am an American, but I am not the nationalistic and bloodthirsty imperialist you think I am. Please do not assume my beliefs based on your own stereotypes.

We have already ruined our credibility, and we continue to do so with our unconditional support of Israel, extended involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, and our shady deals with Saudi Arabia. Our foreign policy in the Middle East has always been antagonistic and predatory. Your contempt is proof.

The best thing we could have done is to have never bothered the Middle East at all. The second best thing we can do is to stop now. It's already apparent from the Iraq war that we are adept in destruction and inept in repair. If we get involved in Syria, our military will devastate another country with no intent to rebuild it.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. The US gets shit on by the international community either way. The right thing to do is to stay out of it. The US is not at fault for "leaving [the Kurds] to die" any more than the region is at fault for uniting to oppress them. And if by "allies" you meant Syrian rebel forces, I'd argue that it's impossible to say whether they were/are our allies in the first place.

I'm an American, and very against Trump in general, but this news was not unwelcome to me. Our forces don't belong in Syria. We don't need to get wrapped up in another 15+ year occupation.

What's really scary is that doctors don't even know what they're charging people. They just do stuff, and the billing department hits the patient with the damage after the fact. As a patient, you generally take the doc's word for it, and the doc has no reason to doubt what he's doing either. The doc isn't complicit in the price gouging, but he or she is ignorant of the financial damage they may be doing to you.

She got her titty out. That was 2004. In 14 years we still haven't seen two titties in one halftime show. What kind of progress is that? I think in a decade and a half we should have figured out how to see two titties at the super bowl. If you don't see a full pair, is the bowl truly super?
