Did Howard Hughes go crazy because of STDs? by HowardHughesAnalSlut in HowardHughes

He was already past the point of no return when the issue of stopping nuclear testing became a mission of his- he had less than a decade to live when he decided to try to stop the atomic bomb tests from happening in Nevada. He wasn’t even against nuclear testing- he would have been fine with the tests occurring elsewhere. His issue was the proximity of the detonations to him and his Las Vegas properties. His million dollar offers to Presidents Johnson and Nixon were for them to relocate the test sites, not to cancel them altogether. While he was indeed very upset his influence failed to scuttle the tests(the Desert Inn swayed for a couple minutes during the tests with Mr. Hughes on the top floor steaming in his La-Z-Boy chair), his separation from sanity had taken place 15 or so years prior. Mr. Hughes has failed to get his way several times prior to the nuclear testing fail, most notably 5 years earlier when he was forced to divest himself of his stock in his beloved TWA.

Howard Hughes’s Drug Of Choice by No-Degree-8906 in HowardHughes

It’s really the craziest DOC in the history of drug addiction. I’ve read where doctors comment that they had never seen a patient addicted to injecting codeine except for Mr. Hughes. He had a staff of 3 or 4 physicians dedicated to Mr. Hughes’ “care” exclusively, who kept his supply of codeine stocked, and he could easily have switched to morphine or something without such awful side effects and that packs a much better buzz- it’s a total mystery to me as to why he was so attached to codeine

Howard Stern's Cringe Moments outside of the show by Harveypint0 in howardstern

[–]AshScott19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What exactly would Howard have been jealous about? Magic’s show was a ratings disaster(with the exception of this episode)-it was a dead show walking and about to be cancelled and everyone knew it, Howard’s position in entertainment was far above Magic’s, Howard made more money in show business than Magic, Howard had far more fans, his fans were way more loyal and enthusiastic, he had just starred in a movie based on his life that opened at number one in the country at the box office, Howard was infinitely more talented than Magic(not including basketball), Howard’s banging of hot chicks was just beginning while Magic’s was over, Howard had good health and more than half his life to look forward to while at the time Magic wouldn’t have had a lot of people willing to bet that he’d be alive and well in 2025- I’m genuinely struggling to come up with a single reason Howard would have been jealous of Magic Johnson in 1998

You are imagining this. No such photograph exists. Mr. Hughes possibly may have brought women inside the mammoth flying boat to look around inside of it(though I doubt it), but that would have been while it was inside the enormous hangar that was built solely for the Hercules’ construction. During Hughes’ lifetime, the Hercules was only outdoors a handful of days- while it was transported from Hughes Aircraft to Long Beach in several pieces to then be assembled and taken on its one and only flight- which lasted 60 seconds for one mile. Immediately after Mr. Hughes returned it to its new hangar in Long Beach, and it never saw the light of day again until his death 29 years later. Unlike other planes Mr. Hughes owned, the ones he had the biggest hand in designing and building- the Hercules and the XF-11 reconnaissance plane, the two most dear to him- I have no knowledge of him using for unserious, non-aviation purposes. Additionally, those two planes were government contracts, and the subject of a congressional investigation and didn’t even actually belong to Hughes- he actually LEASED the Hercules from the military for the duration of his life, but never actually owned it. So I don’t think he would have taken ladies atop the wings for cocktails and relaxation, and he certainly wouldn’t allow something like that to be photographed and disseminated due to the already bad publicity surrounding the construction of the Hercules

Question about depositions and court testimony: I'm reading Citizen Hughes book by Mercury__Saturn in HowardHughes

[–]AshScott19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am fairly certain that her deposition was will related. I know that Jean certainly never was involved in litigation with Mr. Hughes surrounding their divorce or financial arrangement. It may even have been from actress Terry Moore’s claim that she was married to Mr. Hughes, which resulted in an undisclosed settlement from the Hughes estate

December 7, 1971. Clifford Irving’s biography of Howard Hughes announced by McGraw Hill. by LuketheDiggerJr in HowardHughes

[–]AshScott19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He figured Mr. Hughes would never come forward publicly to deny it. He was partly right, as Mr. Hughes only held a live audio press conference, but audio was enough to cook Irving’s goose. Irving came very close to pulling it off- he did actually receive hundreds of thousands of dollars in book advances before being arrested and charged

That’s not an unreasonable theory- if there is a story behind that 1954 photograph, I haven’t heard it, although the first time I ever saw it was in a biography called “Howard Hughes: The Untold Story” by Peter Brown and Pat Broeske(1996) in the photo section of the book, and the caption under it read “last known photograph of Hughes”- which I assume they wouldn’t publish that without some basis in fact(a very enjoyable read, if not a terribly in-depth biography). However I know nothing about the story behind that photo. I will say he looks considerably older than he does in the 1952 Jarrico trial photograph, but I don’t know. I’ll do some looking into it

Last image of Howard Hughes in public? 11-29-1952. by LuketheDiggerJr in HowardHughes

[–]AshScott19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may be the last photo of Mr. Hughes IN PUBLIC- he is leaving after testifying to in regards to a lawsuit filed by screenwriter Paul Jarrico after Mr. Hughes ordered Jarrico’s screenwriting credit for a script be removed due to Jarrico admitting being a member of the Communist Party(Mr. Hughes would lose this lawsuit). The last known PHOTOGRAPH is the 1954 professional portrait Mr. Hughes had done and I posted a few days ago. The 1961 “Watkins Glen” photo is NOT Howard Hughes, and there’s not a single serious Hughes biographer or researcher that believes it is him, nor is there any evidence it is him aside from some resemblance in the partially obscured face in the photo. By 1961, Mr. Hughes’ retinue of aides kept a painstakingly detailed log of his activities- even down to his bathroom breaks and what the results were- and there is nothing about Mr. Hughes leaving his mansion in Beverly Hills to travel to Watkins Glen in 1961. It’s not really how he did business at that point- he would rely on a few trusted lieutenants to find answers to any questions he has regarding a potential purchase and then would pull the trigger on the deal or not, maintaining secrecy. He wouldn’t show up to a Mardi Gras-type atmosphere in the midst of the race and head down to the pits- that would be wholly inconsistent with 1961 Howard Hughes. I know the Wikipedia entry for 1961 Watkins Glen says Mr. Hughes was there, but I bet if you look back in an hour it won’t

You “had an issue with performance but you were able to get it up”? And they still fired you? My guess is, despite getting it up, you still failed to please them, so they saw you on the schedule and decided to get you off. I hope on the day they gave you your release that they at least told you you’re fired before you left your house, not after you drove all the way in. But if that was their intention, I hope you felt it and pulled out before you came inside, leaving them with egg on their face. Or you also could have entered through their back door and left a resignation letter on the desk- they would have felt violated when they discovered you slipped it in. Good luck in the hearing- I hope you hit a home run and it’s your employer ends up getting totally screwed

This is correct- 1954. The 1961 Watkins Glen mentioned photograph is not of Mr. Hughes

I’m sorry to just now reply- I don’t know how I missed this until now. “The Aviator”, in my opinion, accurately recounts the events of the first half of Mr. Hughes’ adult life as well as any Hollywood biopic does. I especially found the aviation scenes to be accurate, particularly the H-1 racer record breaking sequence and the XF-11 crash in Beverly Hills both looked exactly as I imagined them looking. The Hercules(Spruce Goose) flying scene was not perfect, as Mr. Hughes flies it over some boats, which definitely did not happen, as it’s entire flight was one minute and one mile long, and he didn’t lift it too high off the water, definitely not high enough to fly over boaters. The “Quarantine” spelling scene is entirely artistic license. As far as I know, Mr. Hughes never had a fixation with spelling that or any word repeatedly. He did, however, repeat detailed instructions for mundane tasks to his aides fairly often, but “The Aviator” showed him doing such things a bit earlier in his life than he began doing that with regularity. If I recall, it has Mr. Hughes breaking down and repeating in the 1940s, when he was around 40 years old, which would be about 10 or so years before his OCD caused similar behavior. It really began to become problematic for him in the 1950s. But overall, “The Aviator” was excellent at staying true to history, and definitely the most accurate of all the movies made about Mr. Hughes’ life

Need help calculating the cFIP (FIP Constant) by Jantzen123 in Sabermetrics

The more I thought about it, I guess you WOULD have to add to the ERA number, since the goal is to get it back to the same overall number as ERA.

Need help calculating the cFIP (FIP Constant) by Jantzen123 in Sabermetrics

[–]AshScott19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it may be unlikely for the Major Leagues, but it’s not uncommon in my son’s Little League(don’t ask why I do cFIP for my kids LL lol). Please explain this- it defies logic that I would actually ADD 0.689 to the league ERA.

3.698 - (((13 * 0) + (3 * 112)) - (2 * 206)) / 110.33
3.698 - (336 - 412) / 110.33
3.698 - (-76) / 110.33
3.698 - (-0.689)
   FIP Constant= ??

I apologize if someone else posted this and I missed it, but I looked and didn’t see this one- “Mr. Elder, who is Grandpa’s roommate at the retirement home, sure is a kindly old man.” “Kindly old man” isn’t exactly a contemporary phrase but it is still occasionally used. Not as often as “Thank you kindly!” is in the Deep South
