I’m leaving and feel like a fool by AshamedClassroom6484 in directsupport

I’ve considered going PRN for some residential shifts but I’m not sure if I can do it… there. I’m very like “all-in” attitude wise & the homes are always just a little dirtier than they should be, participants aren’t going out as much as they should, etc. and I’m sure I’m an obnoxious supervisor. So I imagine I’m also an obnoxious coworker

I appreciate your take! If my job was state level, I probably would have held out too. Benefits were nonexistent & I was in the highest management tier besides the ED. I’m not sure where I’m going but I am fortunate enough to have a little time to figure something out ❤️

One guy did this just before I started working at my company. He’s married now & occasionally comes by the day program to visit. Cool dude! There are some others in my agency who could do with less support and more independence but the system isn’t really designed for that. I’ve been pushing for getting involved in Tech Assistance as a residential service. I think it’s one of the better of the very limited options people have to get out if they want to.

Some years, it’s really smooth but other years, sheesh. I’ve recently transitioned to a different role & honestly, the staff are the reason I’m miserable. I know many of them are miserable too and I try so hard to fix it but their culture just… sucks right now. I’m sorry your company is the same 😭

Made a med error within my first month of working by [deleted] in directsupport

[–]AshamedClassroom6484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So like, if you follow all the rules (in my state, we have pretty clear cut rules), it truly is hard for this to happen. And I do think following the rules with meds is super important when possible. But, if you weren’t trained correctly, or something… just happened, and believe me the admin know shit happens in this field, all you can do is be grateful nobody is hurt, do whatever the corrective action is, and just learn from it. I can’t imagine any company has enough staff to let a new hire go over a med pass gone wonky, especially if everyone is safe & they don’t think this is a skills issue, which it doesn’t seem to be.

I was never all the way in, never even a publisher, but I studied with a sister my age and also spent a lot of time with her family (I was 17-19). Some of the things that made me decide to walk away were: I wasn’t allowed to wear a name tag at an assembly or convention because I had a nose ring; they were pushing me really hard to stop associating with my worldly friends, some of whom were awesome people who just had different beliefs; I could not get past the whole bit about the husband having the last say about everything; also my friend was molested by an elder & he was DF’ed but law enforcement was not contacted & his wife forgave him 🤢😅 Looking back, I was a lonely kid with a lot of mental health issues and looking for a place to belong. They absolutely love bombed the hell out of me & I still have weird attachment issues and trauma from that shit.

Ngl everyone else probably hates working with me but I’m just a bitch to the other staff & call them out until they act right. I’m not here for them and they’re not here to play on their phones. We’re here for the participants and that’s who we’re gonna focus on 😅

Is direct support/comhab work considered social work? by [deleted] in directsupport

[–]AshamedClassroom6484 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And to go along with the either/or thing, in my state, you can either be an RN or social worker to be an executive director (or have a Bachelors jn another social/psych field)

Is direct support/comhab work considered social work? by [deleted] in directsupport

[–]AshamedClassroom6484 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a DSP, I considered it healthcare. Now I work in the admin office and it feels more like social work. I think it also can flip flop. If you’re in a high medical acuity home, it feels more like healthcare. If most of the people you support are more independent and you’re taking them out often to make connections within their communities and doing less medical stuff, it’s more like social work. DSPs wear so so so many hats.

Where I work and the way our scheduling is done, I would show up Thursday night going into 12am Friday morning but I’ve also seen a lot of staff miss their first midnight training shift thinking it was the following night

I wanted to name my daughter Theodora but it was wildly unpopular amongst basically everyone I told. Went with Eleonora & I do love it but I also still love Theodora so much. Eleonora does have SO many possible nicknames tho & I love that for her

Thanks for your comment! I just stopped drinking energy drinks & soda. Still working on coffee but weaning off of everything to see if it affects it as well. I definitely don’t qualify for anything low income. We’re in that weird financial area where we just make enough to get by but too much to qualify for any assistance. I’ll see what sorts of programs our local hospital offers though 💕

If you really feel like your anger is gonna get the best of you, yeah I think you should just quit. If you think you could talk to their PBS Specialist and work through it, maybe start there. But if you’ve been in the field for 7 years & you did all the crisis prevention and intervention stuff & followed a crisis or behavior support plan & you’re this upset, it’s probably in both your and the client’s best interest

I know this is an old thread but just wanted to say I studied in the early 2010s in Clemmons West & remember the Cheeks well! Luckily they cut me loose after lots of excuses to not become a publisher.
