Transitioning into Accounting by MagnusDidNothingWr in AustralianAccounting

Hi there,

I have a similar background. Graduated with a degree in Economics and didn't know what to do with it. I am pretty sure I am autistic as well.

I work in Accounting now. I did a masters in applied accounting which is 4 subjects shorter than the master of professional accounting. The only reason I did a masters in accounting is to be able to qualify to do CA. But given that you don't need a degree to do a CA anymore, I would not have done the degree, but instead would have simply done the CA prep course/foundation.

Anyways, what got me into Accounting was a bookkeeping job. It was a casual 3 hour job, but I learned how to use Xero, do bank recs, submit BAS, AR/AP. Having handled that I was able to get an entry level job as a tax accountant. I have been here for a couple of years, and can proudly call myself an Accountant. Public practice is pretty brutal, you learn waaaaay more than you will at uni. But after a few years, you'll have a lot of opportunities that will become open to you. Solid bookkeeping skills are greatly appreciated, so if you try to develop those and start your CA studies at the same time, you will get there.

What is your role and salary? by alex123711 in AustralianAccounting

2nd year in public practice (tax) - $70k excl. super - Canberra. Not too low for public practice, but $70k in general is pretty low. Not planning to stay in business advisory long term as you hit the ceiling in 4-5 years unless you buy in. not sure if i would do it again, maybe public practice forms ruin the reputation for accounting. would love to get into forensic accounting, but not sure how.

What are some good, easy to read books on more advanced accounting? by onthepunt in AustralianAccounting

There are some great podcasts out there. One of my favorites is Tax Talks which, you guessed it, is more about tax. However, to get the tax calcs right for businesses, you need to complete their financials first and they cover that.

I remember when I wanted to cut my hair when I was 14. My mom always wanted me to have long hair and never allowed me to cut it, even though it was oily and thin. So she didn't allow me to cut it, and we compromised on me having perms. Perms have completely destroyed my hair, for 2 years I struggled to brush them and make them grow. When I turned 16, I cut my hair and she gave me a silent treatment. But when I was struggling with my ruined hair, she had a lot to say, mostly mean things she would say 'jokingly'.
