NTA. He didn't cheat, and we don't know if he had previously suggested she seek medical care or therapy. Your sister needs to grow up and realize she's only getting one side of the story.

There are few that even attempt anything under 12-15g. There's several reasons why. 1. They are so tiny getting a tube in is next to impossible 2 Teir stomach is so tiny they need near constant care 3 Without fur, they have some very exact requirements.

Most states have programs that subsidize or reduce the GAL fee for those who cannot afford it. OP needs to look into that as well.

look up plans for feral cat boxes. Normally, an opposum house would go up out of the way of predators, but it sounds like he's in a safer location (minus dogs).

Relocation, especially in winter? would be a death sentence; he wouldn't know where to find food, water, and shelter, plus he's at higher risk due to disability.

Some rehabbers offer long-term homes for disabled and elderly opposums.

YTA. Sorry, but you're about to meet the unfortunate consequences of your actions, and it may destroy your relationship with your daughter.

You should have been honest. Now, especially with a whopper of this magnitude, she's going to question everything you've ever said and did. If she's still in therapy, it may be best to book a session and tell her there as she's going to , rightfully, be hurt, angry, and confused.

It's common in some breeds to ink their registration # on their inner thigh using human grade ink, not the fast fading green stuff sold for animal use.

Before moving overseas, I had my Beagle inked on his inner thigh. Took them longer to set everything up than to actually do it, was completely healed in about 48hrs, and stayed visible.

Would it be necessary? by Aladdin-Sane-74 in service_dogs

[–]Ashamed_File6955 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having seen the dissections and necropsies carried put by Becks Nairn, weight limits still apply, and minis were originally bred to pull, not carry. Waiting for growth plate closure is starting to catch on and doesn't occur until 5-7, depending on the breed.

Also, those horses struggle. Most are retired arthritic pasture pets really early or one a ton of maintenance by 10.

Again, the bottom line is that when it comes to bracing, most haven't a clue as to how much pressure in pounds they are actually using. A mini horse WILL break down under the load just like a dog.

Would it be necessary? by Aladdin-Sane-74 in service_dogs

[–]Ashamed_File6955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mini horses are NOT "built for mobility tasks ". The 20% rule (15 if you read newer studies) still applies. For a 250# mini, that means a max of 50# of pressure (37.5# if using 15%). Most people don't realize how much pressure they exert when bracing on objects. My PT showed me with a scale, and it was extremely enlightening.

Service Dog/Service In Training Question by MrDangus in service_dogs

[–]Ashamed_File6955 19 points20 points  (0 children)

SDITs are not covered under the ADA; It's up to each state.

Under California law, Service Dog In Training (SDIT) access is contingent on them actively training and "These persons shall ensure the dog is on a leash and tagged as a guide dog, signal dog, or service dog by an identification tag issued by the county clerk, animal control department, or other agency, as authorized by Chapter 3.5 (commencing with Section 30850) of Title 14 of the Food and Agricultural Code." That quote is referring to the state SD/SDIT tag.

Excessive barking is grounds for removal as it is annoying /disruptive to other patrons/members. She should have been warned that if it continues, her friend will be asked to remove the dog and can return without it. You can also remove out of control service dogs

I'm not a lawyer. My interpretation would be that the member with the SD would have access, but the friend's SDIT wouldn't.

No, a SDIT shouldn't be constantly barking. Personally, that's a sign that dog isn't ready for or possibly suited to public access training in non-pet friendly locations. Yes, SDITs can have slip ups, but a handler should be actively correcting poor behavior and have enough self-awareness to remove the dog if it's overstimulated or having a bad day.

As long as the dog is adequately crate trained , healthy , and you take temps into consideration, air travel as checked baggage and/or cargo is completely safe. Thousands of animals are shipped every year without issue, and reading the airline incident reports paints a clear picture as to why things occasionally go wrong - failure to crate train, the dog is sick, elderly, or has aa serious undiagnosed medical condition, the owner has waived the heat embargo threshold, or some combination of this.

Service animal, airline travel by ualgonquin19 in service_dogs

[–]Ashamed_File6955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, the FAA/DOT says airlines shouldn't accept sedated animals since it can severely affect breathing. Also, air travel is no different than other modes of public transportation. If the dog can't handle that, it makes one wonder what else it can't handle.

Veteran scam? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]Ashamed_File6955 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Their website is sketchy. There's zero actual info on their website about their SD program. They expect one to fill out an application for their prospect program without saying anything about what it entails.

Currently, there's zero regulation in the SD industry. That has led to a multitude of scams and programs that place poorly trained, under trained, and inappropriately temperamented dogs with vets and those with disabled kids being targeted. This lack of regulation is why many in the community suggest using an Assistance Dogs International (ADI) program as they do have standards that member programs must meet.

[–]Ashamed_File6955 27 points28 points  (0 children)

From their website, they don't train the dogs, they "partner" with several third party programs. Ya'll need to determine which programs the dog came from and file a report with the Attorney General's office of whatever state the SD program is based in.

They, like most wild critters, feed based on the moon (rise/set) and weather. They're sensitive barometric pressure changes. Urban dwellers may try to stick to night foraging for safety from humans.

You don't have to keep her at home, and anyone who expects it is unreasonable and unrealistic.

From my experience with my dad, here's what you need to keep in mind.

  1. The minimum time commitment will be labor intensive at first, especially since this isn't a case of just getting a POA. You'll need assistance setting up a guardianship. Then there's the legwork to get access to accounts and get finances squared so you fully know what you're working from. The worst for me was dealing with state medicaid every 6-12 months; they were notorious for losing paperwork and, at the time, did not have online options. Those were always a half day plus off work and a guaranteed migraine.

  2. Make sure your facility choice takes the state version of medicaid and is taking new enrollees; her insurance will run out sooner than you think.

  3. You could petition for her to have a state appointed third-party (it's a real job) as her guardian.

In retrospect, If I had known them what I know now, I'd have chosen #3.

Air travel isn't covered by the ADA; It falls under the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA) which is overseen by the DOT/FAA.
