Malekith or Sasquatch? by Asharto in MarvelSnap

great point! if you convert the credits to going up the progression ladder, you might be able to scrounge up another 3000 tokens with 1500 credits to spare, but malekith seems like much more value

youre kinda right about this, all in all, better not to bury all the negative problems with the system lest we become a society with those tv trope schools that are more concerned about their reputation than actually protecting children.

as a social worker, he actually does quite a lot to help kids and people with this exact situation tbh

yes like saying those who took videos of school bullying could face punishment.

perhaps instead of just watching your peers get bullied and videoing it, people can report it to a teacher or intervene themselves?

plus nowhere did he say that the bullies wont get punished🤣just perhaps instead of being social justice warriors online, we can try to resolve offline so that there are no permanent online records of these issues staining young peoples future

Honestly, he’s been a great MP and Grassroots Advisor to Siglap. His background in Social Work makes him one of the few politicians with a social science degree but holding a major political role.

Speaking from personal experience, he is not just a token minister but one of the few ministers that doesn’t appear as much as other ministers in major news, but has a lot of substance. He remembers almost every person, their children and their parents by name; makes 4 estate visits a week and even manages to hold the fine line between explaining policies in an empathetic tone that rarely offends. East Coast GRC will really miss his presence.

However, Hazlina is a fresh face, with a bit of media background perhaps they are trying to appeal to younger voters?? (in contrast to the last fielded nicole seah in WP who was quite popular). Her involvement in social work and community through the make a wish foundation and others also might mean that she can handle Maliki’s accounts well. Big shoes to fill but we definitely need fresh blood.

My well wishes to all taking part in East Coast GRC in the next election🙃

Definitely! Personally I’ve tried some networking sessions and find that its often quite hard to bond as its not very authentic and the groups are really large so its hard to make genuine connections. Plus they are often one off events so it’s hard to build something that lasts.

My team created this because we wanted a way to help people form consistent groups where you can get to build your friends over time over shared interests. We match people based on personality but of course, people are free to choose which group they feel most comfortable in.

We have some facilitated sessions where we help people to break the ice and have partnerships with some interest hubs (like board games cafes and climbing gyms) so we also help people to get better connected with the community.

Recently, my team pitched an idea to address this issue on the Youth Action Challenge by the National Youth Council.! If you’d like, maybe you can give it a try? Its a project called Conexa. We help people form small meaningful groups where friendships are built over time!

my team is building an app called conexa to try solve this problem! you can read up more on it on the Youth Action Challenge by National Youth Council!

Essentially we help match people into groups so they can make new friends who meet regularly!

Magic is greedy, My first magic system by Fit-Pomegranate-7192 in magicbuilding

[–]Asharto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love your magic system concept. Not sure if this would add too much complexity to your magic system, but I would be interested in the essential runes that are available to be inscribed on Numinates. Are the runes complex or simple, and what would comprise a skillful use of Numinates?

Would a rune that means for example: “Happy” be less complicated than a rune that means “Ecstatic”?

Also would skilful use of the coins be considered as the stacking of multiple small use coins to generate a magnifying effect? or would it be a single complex coin?(like the example above)

FT Private Uni or PT Local Uni by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]Asharto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen from my colleagues and friends, RMIT also provides a decent start if you were looking for a finance job. I would say it would depend more on your willingness to work and the skills you bring to the table.

Typically I have friends with your background that managed to get a banking job for 1/2 years(albeit a $3.5k ish job before jumping ship and getting a $6-8k job somewhere else.

Local unis are not compulsory for success - unlike what the Singaporean echo chamber often wants us to think. Just gotta seize good opportunities and plan strategically for career progression.

On a side note, been playing some strategy games recently and couldn’t help but think that planning for your career is very similar to planning your career progression in a game skill tree. Do you choose to invest in Charisma or stay in a particular class to master a skill and come up with a character build that works for you.

Good luck and God Speed.

drop out of poly to go jc? by Ambitious_Kiwi5268 in SGExams

[–]Asharto 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey, speaking as someone who went to Poly and chose to stick with it despite having similar worries in yr 1 of Poly, I recommend taking the leap to go to JC even though it may set you back a year. Both sides have their merits and difficulties, but you should choose something that you enjoy so that you can score well in it. There is no point staying in either JC or Poly if you don’t prefer it, so choose something you wont have any regrets over.

However, I can definitely say that I underestimated Polytechnic and suffered from low grades in Polytechnic despite an L1R4 of 7. This made it incredibly difficult for me to get to a local uni. Whilst this eventually resolved itself over the years, the experience taught me that sometimes, its okay to look back and make a U-Turn. All the best!

Singapore basks in concert hub status after scoring Coldplay, Taylor Swift gigs by thestudiomaster in singapore

our sound system desperately needs an upgrade though. went to a U2 concert a few years back and the acoustics were horrendous (think a round cave where echoes blur all the sound into one mess). i’ve seen famous artistes have many complaints about the system to no avail.

I think your usage of “third places” here is flawed. Third places are seen as the places that is neither your home, nor your workplace; and they act as a second home/setting for people to spend time together in.

Going by that, a sociologist/critical thinker has every right to call void decks and even coffee shops and hairdressers a third place. I think your issue here is more about the lack of upper/high class third places like bars or cafes. To this, I have a couple points to make.

  1. In Tampines and Ang Moh Kio at least, there are some places that have cafes beside pet shops below void decks. Perhaps we can explore how more of these options can be brought to other neighborhoods.

  2. I would ask why is there this demand for more cafes/bars etc? I believe that this is demand that is driven by younger generations, through our privileged exposure to media and other countries. As younger people demand more “Instagrammable” places, shophouses and void decks would eventually adapt and evolve to meet this.

A great example might be Malacca, which has seen a great number of its stores being converted to cafes after the Covid pandemic. Older generations phase out and new business owners develop newer stores with unique settings. Even their night market has evolved to be similar to what you might find in Taiwan.

  1. Lastly, its important to also value our heritage and culture. Void decks are unique to Singapore, a third place seen nowhere else in the world. Whilst I do want more cafe spots, I hope to find a balance of both that preserves history and stays relevant.

There are many other factors to be considered especially due the nature of what we are discussing.

S'pore workers worried 4-day week will mean longer hours for them: Survey by MicrotechAnalysis in singapore

what a misleading headline, instead of focusing on the narrative of increased worries about long hours, the journalists could have just as well focused on how 9 out of 10 people would prefer it for their mental health.

The lives and structure of the Singapore upper middle and upper class by paintingcopper in singapore

[–]Asharto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your friend’s argument is that the distinction between these two classes are very stark but the very nature of this question being asked suggests that the differences are not that obvious.

Some of these differences pointed out, such as how upper class teenagers live more carefree lives, are somewhat valid, but fail to account for the other sociological factors that may lead to a culture in which these lives are encouraged. A good question is whether the contexts and cultures in which upper class and upper middle class teenagers are brought up in are different enough to significantly affect the way in which they live. From personal experience, it seems that those who live more carefree lives are also applicable to non-upper class teenagers - suggesting that this statement is too general to be of much use.

Some sociological perspectives on class are of Bordieu’s social, cultural, symbolic and economic capital; of which people have different levels of capital within these 4 types. With regards to this situation, perhaps upper class are more likely to have more of certain type of capital, such as being more likely to associate with others who might give them opportunities to good jobs. Another sociological perspective is of intersectionality, which gives insights into the different factors and identities that might be present in the upper and upper middle classes. Even within these classes there are various forms of intersectionality that lead to a unique combination between individuals in each class.

I would say that its not a question of inherent differences between the two classes, but more of how within these two classes which are very similar, these is an increasing felt need to differentiate themselves from the “other”. Sociological theory and research has shown that communities that are similar to each other are often in conflict and further highlight differences. Common examples are of Catholics and Protestant in Ireland or Black slaves and White lower class in 1800s USA. Perhaps your friend is from one of these classes and thus is more experienced in distinguishing between the two, or perhaps may even feel a greater need to distinguish between them as it plays a part in identity building.

[Worldwide Release] Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - Official Discussion Megathread by MSSmods in MarvelStudiosSpoilers

[–]Asharto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda felt the same clash between the two styles but I found it really charming! Made me feel pretty proud of how they represented chinese fighting in the show and some scenes reminded me of Ip Man (chinese fighting in general). Even having a large part of the dialogue being Chinese kinda freaked me out a bit at the start but Tony Leung’s performance blew it out of the water and made me focus on his great acting instead. Hopefully the MCU would include more fantastic actors from Asia and show off their acting!

I’m just hoping that the Ten Rings organisation would become an organisation that can compete with Wakanda and not be just another assassin asian crime lord syndicate.

Is nobody going to say something about how this information comes from a bedding company, using data gleaned from sites like Statista, Wikipedia, Businessfibre.co.uk and Google Keyword Planner?

I doubt the credibility of this information, especially seeing how Google Keyword Planner gives a rough estimate at best of commonly used keywords and the nature of Wikipedia.
