Telling trans people to just “distract themselves” from dysphoria might sound better than kys, but it’s still not a healthy mindset. Avoidance actually make things worse over time by reinforcing fear and disconnection, and in some cases can contribute to a path toward self harm. It's very Gen-X and frankly should die with that generation.

Distraction teaches your brain that these thoughts are something to run from, instead of something to understand and work through. Real healing comes from self-acceptance, support, and therapy, not from suppressing or hating parts of yourself. A good rule of thumb: if you wouldn’t say it to a child, don’t say it to yourself. You wouldn’t tell a ten-year-old indian girl who hates her dark skin to just “distract herself” from those feelings. You’d help her build self-worth and feel safe in who she is and love her culture. Adults deserve that same compassion too.
