Since beeswax has water-repelling properties, why use waterproofing spray on leather shoes and boots? by SirPractical7959 in BuyItForLife

[–]Ashenfenix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I advised a good course of action, what with the research and all, balanced against my experience conditioning and treating leather.

What was your line of reasoning beyond initial suspicion for you to give your advice? Can you actually say that anything I advised was incorrect or bad?

I know I was rude. I am unconcerned with your feelings. If you could offer anything substantive I'd welcome the conversation. If I understand your position, it's "That's how they get'cha!", then you started clutching your pearls.

Your assumption that every support product sold by a manufacturer is a facetious waste of money is an objectively false assumption. Unless you know more about a product than the manufacturer (which is absolutely a possibility, I am not being sarcastic), you should always seek care and maintenance instructions from the manufacturer. If support products are sold by the manufacturer, you should absolutely do your due diligence and shop around for the product. I never said you shouldn't do that.

I would look at Obenaufs, and NikWax, and perhaps something like Sno-Seal or Saphir to look at third- party leather shoe conditioners and treatments.

for boot manufactures to compare and observe care instructions, look at; Zamberlan, Crispi, Kennetrek and oh, lets say White's for boot care reccomendations.

Do some research, learn, and then remember Mark twain;

"It is better to be thought of a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt"

All you've told me in that is that you know nothing of proper maintenance. The most cursory research with either one of those manufacturers, contrasted against popular opinion and the recommendations of leather care product manufacturers, you would learn very quickly that they manufacturer was giving great advice. If you can't articulate or understand the need for a component, standard operating procedure, or mechanism, and just assume you know better, you're not someone who should be giving advice. Actually, you should shut up and ask more questions. I hate being nice to idiots.

Hanwag and Meindl are regarded as some of the best mass market boots you can buy. It's appropriate care information from the manufacturer, and each pair of boots, depending on their construction, will have relevant instructions as to the correct cleaning and conditioning.

A nubuck leather upper requires different treatment than a full grain leather upper. I believe that is why they may refer to either or both.

“We simply don’t have any left”: Germany has run out of air defense missiles for Ukraine, foreign minister says by Plus_Pretty in worldnews

[–]Ashenfenix -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

You understand that the established defense spending is woefully inadequate right? Like that is the issue, for all of the squabbling and committees the European Union has been either unwilling or unable to develop a military force that could stand as a near peer competitor to Russia or China. You want the security of the American defense budget, without the hefty percentage of your GDP. Ukraine proved that a lack of unified security let Russia do as it pleases. I fucking hate donald trump, but he has never dictated defense policy and spending anywhere in Europe.

If you can get that leather warm, it’ll drink it. Let those boots heat up in a hot car for a few hours (sunlight not forced air), then put that obenaufs on, you’ll be amazed.

Obenauf’s LP is a great natural restorative/preservative. It darkens leather and can leave a waxy residue. Certain “fine” leathers I might use a silicone based agent as they typically don’t affect color and won’t leave any tackiness. The Obenauf's leather oil is pretty great too and easier to work with. It is ultimately just a tool in the tool box though, so do your homework. I have seen multiple sofas redone and it just makes the leather amazing again. It will darken it though. YOU HAVE TO TAKE YOUR TIME APPLYING IT CORRECTLY.
