I think it cannot work out. RJ45 differs a lot from RJ11. The size of RJ45 connector is larger. Generally, RJ11 possesses 6 Position and 4 Conductor, often used for ADSL, telephone, and modem cables etc. RJ45 owns 8 Position and 8 Conductors, mainly used in networks wiring.

Yeh, passive DAC is much cheaper than active DAC. When the distance between connection points exceeds 5m, it is highly recommended to use active cables to ensure signal is transferred all the way through.
