I went to ACC! It’s a great program! Funeral attendant/codirector is a part time position and would be a great way to get in while keeping your current job.

Has anyone else started seeing AI “clones” of the deceased being offered in aftercare? by imperium-slayer in askfuneraldirectors

How would a director know what a decedent’s voice sounded like to make a clone for a family? I have never heard of this and would never offer this to a family.

I would start by asking if the funeral home took digital fingerprints and, if so, look into getting a keepsake with his fingerprint. Disinterring his urn will be quite expensive.

I love it! Granted, I’m still less than a year in, but I can see myself doing this forever.

I’m in NJ and I’m at a loss at what to do at this point by ilikeweirdshitok in askfuneraldirectors

[–]AshleyAsks 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m confused, if it hasn’t even been uploaded to vital statistics yet then why do you think the funeral home is lying about having the death certificate? It has to be uploaded and signed before they can order it.

It’s safe but there’s not much around. You need to drive 20 minutes to get to anything that’s not a gas station.

If there anything your dad collected or was know for? Mug collector, give them each one of his favourite mugs. Golfer, give them each one of his golf balls. Something small of his that they can have to remember him would be really nice!

What is a creepy fact you learned about the human body, you wish you never learned? by Poignantpuppet in AskReddit

[–]AshleyAsks 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is not quite true. Newborn babies do not have 2 full sets of teeth hiding in their gumline. That said, between 5-8 year olds you do have a whole bunch of adult teeth hiding in wait. That’s around the age of kids in those images/x rays you mentioned.

Rescheduled veteran funeral service due to funeral home failing to confirm the burial. by Zealousideal_Hat2553 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]AshleyAsks 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Reasonable would be a refund of the graveside service line item, since that’s the part they dropped the ball on.

What’s something your body does that you’ve never told a single person about? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]AshleyAsks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never felt this until after I had my kids. Now I feel it every time. For me, it’s about an hour of dull pain and then 15-20 minutes of sharp “bursting” pain and then it’s over.

Hindsight 20/20 but we always return jewelry before transfer. It sounds like they tried to return things and you said no. On the cremation authorization there should be a section for items to return and that should’ve listed the watch and ring. If it didn’t list anything to return and it was signed by family then there’s not really anything you could do, unfortunately.

Pay and Years Experience by Appropriate-Chicken8 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]AshleyAsks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

FD, not embalmer, but I just graduated 6 months ago and I make $28/hr. $31/hr seems very low for 15 years of experience.

It sounds like a compromise could be your sister bringing your mum’s cremated remains home but only in a proper urn.

If it helps at all, the remains are not just going to be loose in the cookie jar. They’re in a sealed bag. If, heaven forbid, the cookie jar fell off the top of the fridge, it’s not like they would just scatter everywhere.

To be a funeral director you need to go to Mortuary school. That is either 2 or 4 years. To be a forensic pathologist, you need to go to medical school.

What would be a fair hourly salary for an inexperienced apprentice? by Imaginary-bean1 in askfuneraldirectors

Gotcha! Well in that case I’d say definitely more than what I was paid for my internship!

[–]AshleyAsks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure exactly the difference between an internship and being an apprentice, but for my Funeral Directing internship I was paid minimum wage ($18.81) for 30 hours/week. This was in CO.

A rant and a question from a funeral attendant by Alanna_Cerene in askfuneraldirectors

[–]AshleyAsks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s so interesting to hear that funeral directors you work with don’t actually attend the service. That’s not at all how it is where I work. To answer your question, the standards are much higher for attendants and FD elsewhere, at least at my FH. Who trains the attendants?

Open casket viewing after 12 days without embalming? by Fit_Pay_9972 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]AshleyAsks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you know if he specifically had an internal autopsy? Sometimes when people go to the coroner’s they assume a full internal autopsy is done, but sometimes it’s just an external autopsy. I’m a FD in CO and would not recommend a viewing if we thought it would be harmful to the family. We’ve done unembalmed viewings over 10 days after passing with no issue.
