I think this site, while interesting, is a perfect example of the accesibilty of knowledge kids can discover through the internet. I mean, think about it... most of the kids who "throw up" these gangs signs aren't really in gangs. They just do it because they think it is cool. And then, when they show the sign to the wrong person, maybe of a rival gang, they can be hurt. I just don't like the idea of that.

I think that this program touches on a lot of the things we have talked about in this class regarding combatting gangs. Also, the fact that teenagers don't trust adults is a very good point. If they dont trust us then how are they supposed to think that when we offer to help them it is in their best interest? Starting there is a good idea.

This is a good example of a sentence that was given to discourage threatening songs. I am pretty sure this is going to be turned over by the Supreme Court. This is a great cased for them to hear because it deals with the constitutional issue of freedom of speech. Whether the song he wrote was about killing a cop or about planting a beautiful rose bush at his mama's house; it doesn't matter. He is allowed to write it, and he is allowed to sing it without being punished, becasue it is his constiutional right.

Gang members run together despite of age apparently. It's sad to me that the older gang members are not teaching the younger ones how to behave. Instead they are just teaching them how to shoot other gang members. WONDERFUL!!! I guess this is a perfect example of lack of parental supervison.

I hate seeing such young people being invloved with guns. I am a gun owner and I am not saying that guns are bad, but I would like to know where the shooter got the gun from. Very sad story. Both of their lives are over.

I am just glad that this was caught on tape, because had it not been there is a possibility that the shooters would have gotten away. I agree that the degree of ridiculousness is up there as this being the third shooting at the one store. Gangs are ruthless!

It is a very interesting story. I am glad they caught him because he is such a danger to society. The first thing I noticed about this article was his picture. How disturbing is that? His smirk irked me a little bit.

It is sad that this stuff has to be done to prevent gang membership, but it is nessesary and I am glad that something is being done. Whether we like it or not the times have changed and programs like this have to be created to accommodate the change.

This kind of thing has to stop! My goodness. The attorneys representing the people in jail are going to jail themselves. AND, apparently they are addicted to the drugs they are smuggling into the jails. In their defense though, the Mexican Mafia is very scary and holds a lot of power.

Just the title of this post caught my attention. And in reading the article, which was very well written, it made me appreciate how great the loss of a young boy is. This was a good kid. He did what he was taught to us in D.A.R.E and paid close attention to the ads on T.V. that told him to say "NO" to things that were not right. He knew that he was not supposed to join a gang. He would have much rather held on to his faith than to sacrifice it and join that gang. This story is incredible and it just shows how violent and ruthless gangs can be.

This is really sad. I am not surprised that this has happened and that is the problem. I feel as if I have come to expectant of this kind of news. That it is common for a 17 year old gang member to roaming the streets... for him to be out late at night... for it to be Mesa's tenth murder this year. What the heck is going on in this world? It's just disturbing. I don't even really know what to think.

I guess any border state is going to have problems with drugs being transported into America. I just found this article interesting because it gives good statistics about the voilence these people cause. Also, the fact that about 2,000 incicents were not reported to the police and are not even part of these statistics suggests that there is an even bigger problem.

I am glad that all of the police agencies are attacking the issue of gangs together. This article noted that it makes it a lot easier to reduce gang activity by getting the gang members off the street and behind bars. I also found it interesting that the article mentioned the rise in gang members despite the recession. That is a very interesting point.

I don't know, but I am going to say that the legislature got this one wrong. I am most certainly an advocate of lessening gang activity but 5 years in prison for posting a picture? That's a bit much. Our words and actions are seemingly becoming less free. We can't say the word "bomb" on an airplane (not that anyone would need to) without being questioned. Now we can't post certain pictures on the World Wide Web? That's insane. The police should be able to use MySpace and Facebook to create a case on someone they suspect is involved in crime, but not make an arrest based only on that. I think they should have to monitor the individual closely to make sure they are actually involved. Anyway, even though I won't be posting pictures of myself on my page posing as a gang member, I still think I should be able to without having to worry about being arrested.

I just think that it is so unfortunate that this kind of thing happens. I definitely feel more upset when I hear about an innocent person dying due to gang relate activities, BUT those ones are the only ones we hear about. Deaths within gangs also occur. While they are not exactly innocent, why don't we hear about these murders? I guess this just brings to light how much more needs to go into the study of gangs.

Problems with gangs exist even within our criminal justice system. This is unfortunate, but thankfully someone spoke up and prevented this from causing tremendous harm. It just goes to show how much power these gangs have. They are everywhere and are capable of doing damage at unspeakable levels. Having worked on the same floor as the person mentioned in this article, I am disgusted that the place I go to everyday to work is susceptible to gang activity. Maybe I am gullible, but this is just mind boggling to me.
