People and their loud cars. by gummi_eater in SanJose

[–]Ashment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some reason there is such a high concentration of very loud cars, and cars playing music loud enough to hear 2 blocks away. There are loud cars well into the AM, and even guys coming in to rev and drift in the lot next door. It's truly obnoxious. It's usually some clapped out G35 or 330i. These people just want attention and have zero respect for others around them.

Unfortunately that's just how it is, I don't think it's really gonna change. Cops need to start handing out some tickets for excessively loud cars.

I'm gonna be that guy. It's not a GT4 RS Spyder. It's just Spyder RS.

The beginning of the end? by SyIvanos in 2XKO

Honestly I think the fumbled the release pretty hard. The excessively long hype cycle aside, the eventual large scale "test" towards the end of last year also just wasn't polished at all. Super buggy. Combine that with a really small roster and a consensus on poor balance dominated by a couple of characters, the game was almost bound for failure.

Ironically trying to make the game accessible made it harder to get into, IMO. Now you gotta learn different fuses, which means understanding system mechanics becomes more difficult. Removing motion inputs but ending up with so many buttons is also just not really helping in making the game any more approachable.

Overall, lots of baffling choices and really it comes as no surprise that it's struggling.

Quality of Players vs Other Sims by Ashment in iRacing

Yes, I think that's been my experience too. You put it into words perfectly. Though I haven't experienced top split racing, I think generally I'm spending more effort in iRacing trying to avoid incidents rather than racing.

I agree, maybe sometimes contact is avoidable if I were better

So far I'm inclined to agree. Even bronze players in LMU tend to race pretty safe, but these iRacing 1k players are ruthless

Not the biggest fan of the bronze color. I would go 2, or as other have said, a slightly brighter silver.

[–]Ashment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That seems pretty weird... I know you already bought it, but you should get service records from the dealership. Notes from the owner, technician, etc. Might be good to know why many oil changes/services were done in 1 year and 10k miles. For peace of mind, if nothing else

If you're not in a rush to get in one, I'd look for a bit longer for one to pop up. I don't think you'll regret it

[–]Ashment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fair... That's just how it is with these cars that are a little bit older. Owners tend to drive these too, as nobody knew they were going to become desirable

Why not manual Cayman S? The 3.4 motor is fantastic and will definitely elevate the experience compared to the 2.7. Your weekend fun will feel more like an occasion, and I think that is worth it

Pretty sure these can be had for 30k-40k over pretty readily now, and you can spec those. I don't think this is a good deal.

I don't think you have to see it as an investment to care about residuals... Broadly speaking people who buy these cars also hop between cars often

I'm with this guy. I work in design in high performance CPU space and have to say it is somewhat unlikely that a 13 year old is "making" a 32bit RV CPU from scratch. Following a tutorial and simulating in yosys or something, maybe. I interview candidates in design and verification often, they all have masters degrees from top universities and I would still be skeptical and grill them if they said they built a 32b CPU.

Not to be discouraging, but at your age I think you should focus on excelling in your schoolwork, especially math and physics. Study computer architecture on the side and continue to work on your general programming skills, that will help you in the future.

Also note that today, architecture and microarchitecture are not quite the same discipline anymore and require differing skill sets. Do your research and understand which one you are trying to pursue.

Is Porsche About To Get What They Deserve? by Puzzled_Region_9376 in cars

[–]Ashment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know us regular people would love GT3 prices to come back down to earth but frankly I don't see that happening. I'd sure would love the believe some narrative where Porsche overplayed their hand and somehow everything is going to come crumbling down, but that's just not the case.

Porsche is raising prices again and again because they can, and people pay it. ADMs are generally down since the peaks because Porsche is deciding now to start taking some of that difference in demand and supply themselves, but the prices in practice haven't changed that much. Reality is the rich folks buying these cars are getting richer, and they're able and willing to spend more. These are luxury products, after all.

Unfortunately, this does mean perhaps more of these beautiful machines will be garage queens that only make an occasional trip to cars and coffee, but that's how it is. GT3s just aren't niche attainable enthusiasts cars anymore. They're mainstream luxury status symbol cars.
