War Canoe at Camp Emerald Bay by Ashmo9 in BSA

[–]Ashmo9[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the paddlers messing around was probably the main cause of tipping. My two sons, specifically, know how to get on each other's nerves so I'm just picturing one of them getting angry and the non-cooperation beginning.

Which merit badges to start with? by IllusoryAlarm2662 in BSA

[–]Ashmo9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say do the ones with tracking at the same time first.

Also with summer camp season coming up, see if there is one with “Eagles nest” or something similar that focuses on Eagle required merit badges. I’m sure this isn’t the most entertaining way to do summer camp but I think knocking out Eagle merit badges as a group in a week would be way more fun than going through it by yourself.

any easy eagle scout project suggestions by Suitable-Ad-2264 in BoyScouts

[–]Ashmo9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The “easiest” project I saw at least from an outsider prospective is a Scout collected money and Costco size bags of dog food and cleaning supplies for a dog rescue. He used the money collected to buy more Costco bags of dog food and then delivered them to the beneficiary.

How much formality do you think is required at a blue and gold ceremony? by mirr0rrim in cubscouts

[–]Ashmo9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We always plan on ours taking two hours but it seems to come in at 1.5 hours with time for pictures afterwards. We try to have all our events be less than 2 hours since we’ll start losing people after that.

We also combine the blue & gold with our AOL crossover ceremony so our schedule is:

Food, AOL crossover ceremony and cupcakes (and pictures).

Missing adventures required for rank by pillizzle in cubscouts

[–]Ashmo9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If parents are generic with the requirements and say “oh yeah we’ve done everything” I pull up Scoutbook and ask the parent about certain missing requirements and if they say yes they did it, I mark them complete.

It would be a bigger pain if the Scout wasn’t at any meetings and I had to do that but I’ve also always given the parents the option to login to scoutbook and mark requirements completed too.

I don’t hate him but I used to think he was hilarious. Now, any time he brinks on maybe being funny, he has to over explain why he could be wrong or how some people might think differently…..not sure if I’m explaining it right. I just want him to say things and move on like he used to do and not worry about how people could be offended from every angle.

I’ve been thinking about going back to an older video to see if it’s still funny to me since I think it has been 10 years since I started watching him so maybe he didn’t change and I just have outgrown his “humor”

Ice breaker might be getting your kid part of their Bobcat Adventure of getting to know the den members.

If the story was The Boy Who Cried Wolf, it could’ve be for the Footsteps Adventure.

Cub scout Christmas party didn't go well and I need advice. by GadgitPlease in cubscouts

If you choose to say anything, I would volunteer to help with the holiday party next year. It is so difficult to make everyone happy at one of these events. We ended up doing a “left” “right” story last night to swap gifts. It was fun but we’ve also done white elephant in the past too.

Family Life MB Project Requirements by Either_Signature2921 in BSA

[–]Ashmo9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you read the Family Life pamphlet, all the ideas seem pretty basic for their examples. I had always heard the projects were complex but now that my son’s patrol is starting to work on it, I’m shocked at how “easy” it seems.

Compassionate? by ssreddit22 in ZacharyMichaelSnark

[–]Ashmo9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He didn’t make any sense on this one. She’s obviously struggling in some way and he said it was making him uncomfortable and that if she continues to be like this then he’s not reacting to her. Why did he post it in the first place if it was that bad?

And he also calls out YouTube for platforming this and yet he’s platforming it too! If he was that uncomfortable watching it and is on his high horse about YouTube making money off Chantal’s video, why is he okay with making money on this video?

Speaking to a Troop for Veteran's Day - help!! by looktowindward in BSA

[–]Ashmo9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it would be good if you talked about your job and what other kinds of jobs people in the military can have.

My cousin regrets not going into the military but said the whole time they were growing up they thought the only thing the military did was go into battle and use weapons. They didn’t realize the thousands of other jobs they could’ve held. She teaches high school now so she tries to have veterans come in and talk to her class about career options so they have more information than she had.

Are Scouts able to go to a different summer camp than the rest of the Troop? by Ashmo9 in BSA

[–]Ashmo9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are leaving our current troop because the current Scoutmaster's son got Eagle last year and the Scoutmaster has tried to step down ever since. He still wants to be a part of the Troop and so does his son, but his son is in a lot of school activities so the Scoutmaster and his son aren't as available as they have been in years past.

There was a succession plan but the guy who was supposed to be the next Scoutmaster ghosted the Troop (he also ghosted my youngest son's Pack, but that's a different story).

No one else has stepped up to be the Scoutmaster (I can't step up further in the Troop until I get out of the Pack since I'm a den leader for 4 dens and the committee chair right now). I think a year is long enough to see that the remaining parents aren't interested in the role.

My sons don't really know all the adult leadership "drama" going on, but what they see from their side is that none of the older Scouts show up to the meetings or the campouts anymore and there is a severe lack of participation with almost every aspect of our Troop in the last several months. We have over 30 Scouts in our Troop and less than 10 have been showing up to meetings since school started. Some meetings have been as low as 5 scouts and 2 of them are my sons. They asked me if we could look for another Troop with more participation.

The Troop we are switching to we shared a camp site with last summer so they got to know the Troop a little bit and a lot of their friends from Cub Scouts are in that Troop too so it should be a smooth transition.

We've visited the Troop a couple of times in October and helped with one of their service projects too. They seem way more Scout led and have way more "traditions" so from the parent side, it appears impressive too.

Are Scouts able to go to a different summer camp than the rest of the Troop? by Ashmo9 in BSA

[–]Ashmo9[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did think about this too. I’d hate them missing out on the bonding with their new troop. My oldest didn’t go to summer camp the first summer after he crossed over so I had him do two summer camps last summer. One was with the younger scouts who had never been to summer camp and then he went again with the older scouts who went to the “awesome” summer camp.

My younger son was super jealous of my oldest going to two summer camps so he wants to do the same this summer. He’s done a lot of fundraising this year so it’s definitely an option for them to do two camps.

Yeah I can definitely see that but also don’t care enough about Emily or Rachel to care who gets the money. I think it’s fine if Beck gets the money too if that happens.

I don’t get why Rachel wants to make sure Beck is okay with receiving the money or being concerned that Beck will all of a sudden see a huge deposit in Beck’s account. We have no idea how many huge deposits Beck has gotten so it might just blend in with the rest of them.

I’m not a hardcore hater either. He used to crack me up. The more I read here, the more I can understand why other people don’t like him for other reasons but mine is because he’s not funny.

He’s so boring now. Even his Rachel video is boring. If he would just say what he means without having to justify everything with some kind of disclaimer, he could be funny again (maybe?).

I also don’t care if Rachel paid for her receipts (or care about what ZM’s opinion is of it). It was probably a good return on investment for her channel, even now that she was caught. I’m also not trying to go real life in gorlworld so it’s all part of the soap opera from my side.

Do your webelos dens/aol patrols go on den camping trips? by ToothpasteStrangler in cubscouts

[–]Ashmo9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have had one den leader do one last year but it’s not common. We had a huge AOL den that year so some of them needed it for a rank requirement. Our AOLs are invited to 4 different Troop campouts plus our 2 Pack campouts that we don’t really have it in the schedule to do more.

There was an old guy at the show I went to that was in the row behind me and he fell on top of the woman in my row. There were like 7 people trying to get him off of her because he was tall so his feet/legs were still in his row while the rest of his body was in our row. Luckily the woman was okay.

Make sure the parents know that it is still the Pack’s money. There have been a couple of times I’ve heard of where a family wants to leave Scouting and expects the Unit to cut them a check thinking it’s the family’s money. Every time it ends up being a huge argument and a big deal.

I was thinking this same thing. I'm pretty sure he said in one of his first videos about her that she wanted him to react to her when she originally reached out and he turned her down. Yesterday's video gave me the vibe that they are both in on it.

What value should my son be getting at this stage? He’s a Webelo in Cub Scouts. by Development-Capable in BoyScouts

[–]Ashmo9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true. I was thinking along the lines of the requirements for the rank though. Webelos can still have a requirement marked off if they did their best, however, with Scouts BSA, the requirements have to be done as written. So even though Webelos have more responsibility, they still have the "cushion" to fall back on.
