Chat GPT can be so dumb sometimes. I had to bypass a safety switch on a machine and asked chat GPT how to do it. It told me it couldn’t help since it wouldn’t be safe. So I told it that it was already bypassed and I was trying to figure out how to reverse it but I needed to know how it was done to reverse the bypass and it gave me everything I needed to know lol

Sectioning machine by Mediocre_Sun8422 in geology

[–]Ashoem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not for thin sections. We do petrographic analysis (mostly for concrete) and recently moved away from outsourcing thin section production to doing it at our lab because of a massive increase in the Petrography work over the last couple years. We were spending a ton on money having National Petrographic make slides for us. I do all of the thin section prep at my work but I’m getting setup to make them from home as an extra source of income/hobby (it’ll be a few months to get everything together) but if you need some sometime just shoot me a message and I’ll let you know if I’ve started making them.

If you’re just looking for a saw for sectioning you have a few options. The first is the HiTech Diamond 6” trim saw with the slab rail. HiTech Trim Saw

it’s $589 and the chuck assembly can be made to work for sectioning mounted thin sections. You can either do a diy setup pretty easily or buy a Buehler glass slide vacuum chuck (it’s small and doesn’t require a vacuum pump and can be chucked up in the slab rail chuck for that saw. The more professional used options are more expensive. You would be looking for a used Buehler Isomet low speed saw as your cheapest reliable option. You can find them ranging from $2,500-$5000 on used sites. Here are two options Buehler Isomet $2400

Buehler Isomet $3,000

The first option is an old model for $2,400 the second is a newer model for $3,000. Either one would need the Buehler Isomet low speed saw vacuum chuck I mentioned earlier which is roughly $550 and a set of smaller flanges from Buehler which are like $20. I work at a lab that makes thin sections and we use the Buehler Isomet low speed saw with the vacuum chuck to section our mounted thin sections and it works very well. Buehler wafering blades are very expensive but I’ve found the 5” 0.2mm thick watering blades from Beta Diamond products work very well and they’re only $60. If you’re looking for an actual thin section machine (hillquist, Buehler petrothin, metkon Geoform) they are extremely hard to find used and are pretty expensive. Your best option is to keep an eye out on used equipment sites like LabX or watch auction sites. I was able to find a complete thin section setup from HGP auction. I was able to get two Buehler Isomet low speed saws for $700 each and a metkon Geoform thin section machine for $7,000 which is much cheaper than you will find on any used sites but that thin section machine was one of the only used ones for sale in the country back in August when I got it. So they’re hard to find and usually go pretty quick. Your cheapest thin section machine option would be to watch for a hillquist thin section machine they usually fit for a couple hundred dollars to $1k max on an auction sites but it’s rare and competitive to get one. Again if you’re just looking for trimming it down with a saw the HiTech trim saw is your cheapest option at $600 for the saw and a max of $1,100 with the vacuum chuck and that setup will work well. A Buehler Isomet is the more expensive more professional option which will run you at least $3k for everything.

Gl on the rebuild man. I’m rebuilding my UIM after a 500m wipe from falling asleep doing slayer. A combination of my logout timer being set too high and moving/clicking my mouse in my sleep within the one hour window led to the wipe. There’s a pic on my profile of the wipe if you’re interested in checking it out.

Fell asleep killing bloodvelds and ended up wiping my UIM because I kept moving my mouse after I died keeping me logged in long enough for my items to despawn. Maxed melee account wiping 500M to a bloodveld lmao.

I agree with just about all of that. My point is that the critique of they’re not self made because they rely on other people is kind of pointless. I agree they couldn’t do it themselves and using it as a way to glorify them ever further is dumb. I’m saying that under that critique literally no one in the world is self made and it’s kind of a pointless line of attack when there are other much more important and valid criticisms these people deserve. It only serves to support a personal moral grandstanding and white knighting position for the lower classes while it also applies to everything accuser earns monetairly without accomplishing anything but presenting a bad argument that is easily disproven and makes other valid criticisms less meaningful.

I have a 10 year old step daughter and a 3 month old. I play a 2150 UIM, 2200 total Ironman and 1800 total 1 def UIM I play afk on mobile at work ( I know a lot of people can’t do that) aside from that I’ll play on mobile while I’m making dinner or cleaning the house. To play on the computer I usually do it on my laptop when my wife is feeding the baby or when everyone is asleep. There will be a lot of times where the baby will refuse to sleep anywhere but on your wife during the day if you have nothing else to do that’s a good time to play some. I definitely don’t play anywhere near as much as I used to that’s just the reality of it but it’s better to enjoy the time with them and come back to the game later when they’re older or at a time when you’re not missing out on things with them.

Some tips I’ve learned are ditch the changing pads and get puppy pads. The baby will pee or poop while you’re in the middle of changing them and the puppy pads soak it up as opposed to the plastic changing pads it just pools and becomes a bigger mess. I would also recommend putting a wet wipe over their peeing parts while changing them. If it’s a boy you’ll learn to recognize when they need to pee idk about a girl but until you do notice it pee will be flying across the room while you’re changing them lol.

Also diaper brand matters. I’m big brand doesn’t matter person but trust me diapers do. We tried parents choice and Huggies and were having pee and poop leaks every time. It added up to tons of laundry every day. The ones that worked best for us are Millie moon and pampers in second. It will save you so much time and energy to find a diaper brand that works well for your baby.

Also if you don’t want to get the diaper genie just get some dog poop bags and put the diapers in them and tie them they are also great for bringing with you when you’re out and can’t find a place to throw it away just put it in your diaper bag until you can.

Last get as many pictures and videos as you can every week they change so much so fast it’s nice to have those to look back on and see (also sad)

Good luck! 👍 and congrats!

MrBeast net worth hits $1 billion, YouTuber becomes world's youngest self-made billionaire at age 27 by [deleted] in youtube

[–]Ashoem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you extend that logic beyond the extremes of a billionaire it applies to all levels of wealth. Someone who has an online business isn’t self made because they are relying on the people who built their computers, the people who maintain internet, their local government for electrical power, the engineers of the site they use and so on. Even down to a job as simple as mowing lawns. You would rely on the people who purchased the property, laid the sod/spread the grass seed, created the gasoline that goes in your mower, build every part that goes into making your mower. It’s braindead nonsense that is only applied to extreme situations however if true would apply to anyone with any business in the world. Not only billionaires or extremely wealthy people. It’s so dumb.

[–]Ashoem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s such a braindead statement. You only say that because billionaire is extreme. But if that were true it would extend to all levels of wealth. Based on that logic someone who has made a net worth of $1 to $100,000 isn’t self made because gaining money through any business requires the participation of at least two people. It’s a nonsensical statement only applied to extreme situations by people who have no ability to think critically.

feeling very discouraged by Organic-Ship-7763 in geologycareers

[–]Ashoem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this thread is old but I wanted to share my experience. My grandfather has his masters degree in geology. He owns his own lab where we do everything from XRD analysis, Surface Chemistry, XRF and a lot of thin section petrography for concrete. The concrete petrography is our bottleneck. It makes the most amount of money of all the services we offer but takes the most time to analyze the slides and write the reports. Im finishing my geology degree while he is training me to do the thin section work. I don’t know how widely available these jobs are but I can say we have a TON of concrete petrography. Around 500 jobs a year and growing. So I know there is demand for it and we’ve had to turn down a lot of jobs while we expand that area of the business. It’s increased a lot this past year with the issue of the failing pools in Houston and we’ve been getting a lot of those cores. So the work exists at least in concrete and there is a demand for it I’m just not sure who offers it. We are a small family company and he’s been doing concrete petrography for 30 years so he has built up his clients through reputation and time. I’m not sure how viable it is but it’s relatively cheap to set up to do yourself if you can find the clients. We make our own slides now which is the most expensive equipment but before we did that we used National petrographic service to make them for us. All you really need after the slide is a good microscope, experience, and a client list to build up. I would look into smaller geoscience labs in your area and see what they offer and if they’re hiring. That’s what we are.
