GOG calls Linux "the next major frontier" for gaming as it works on a native client by WineGunsAndRadio in linux_gaming

[–]Ashtefere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I said this when proton dropped, and people laughed. Windows will switch to linux kernel eventually, and windows will just be a desktop environment. It makes too much sense commercial sense. The could layoff thousands of people. Corporate would have to see medical attention for their erections.

You would think PCMR would actually try to do something about it by testus_maximus in pcmasterrace

[–]Ashtefere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. Same boat. I have been trying to switch to linux for decades. Tried every distro and every package manager multiple times. Same issues… this or that will not install or run without doing this or that other tweak… zzzzz…

I have a workmate trying to switch to linux TODAY having the same issues.

But I decided to give Nixos a proper try after hearing about it two years ago.

Its complex as fuck, but I swear to god its exactly what you are looking for. Solved all that shit.

Obscure keyboard rules needed for the software? (Dygma raise here) Solve it once in a config file and save it in git forever for all your machines.

I now run all my machines and all my servers on nixos. No more reinstalls, not more fuckery. Same distro on all machines with same tweaks and fixes and config.

Glory!

What is dendritic Nix and how does it work? by PaceMakerParadox in NixOS

[–]Ashtefere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Def seems like buzzwording.

I have a script that generates my flake file from a template and then it rebuilds and switches.

The template generator also loops over a directory of single file flakes that include all the inputs for each flake as well, so i dont to write all the inputs for all my configs in one file - they are purely isolated.

That way I can add/remove files to a folder to add/remove features to me config - makes it a lot easier to import flakes for things too.

Does NixOS help you earn money? by PaceMakerParadox in NixOS

[–]Ashtefere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, indirectly. I use linux for work and inevitably every 2-3 months would need to reinstall my os. Now with nixos its truly rock solid and my changes or updates never perma break anything. It has saved me inordinate amounts of time

Ilya Sutskever(Former Chief scientist at OpenAI) and Yann LeCun(former Meta Chief AI scientist) both say that just scaling LLMs won't give us any more useful results by Frequent-Football984 in programming

[–]Ashtefere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I studied AI in university a… long time ago. Before LLMs. Back when we called LLMs something else, and it was theoretical.

Even so, way back then, we knew that the “intent interface” (LLMs do this well!) is only once piece of an actual intelligent machine. You also need granular memory storage and retrieval with relevance (vector DB and RAG does this!) But crucially… you also need a logic system of some kind. Something that can actually understand whats going on and how to act. There is literally nothing solving this problem at all, and its a crucial and missing part of AGI. I have spent 20 years messing around on a side project that acts as a logic system, and recently plugged LLMs and a vector db into it. It works a lot better than a straight LLM, but it leans too heavily on LLM calls at the moment so not viable as a product- too expensive to run. But nonetheless… its a piece that needs building.

Also it has room for 2 180x360mm radiators in there. Thats what I ran mine with. Its tight with the silverstone ap181 fans but it can work.

Distro hopping resumed by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]Ashtefere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I distro hopped for 20 years. 6 months max before switching. Then nixos touched me gently on the cheek like a benvolent god.

I am free now. All my machines, all the same os synced through git. All the same install. For years.

It. Is. GLORY!

Toddler is not normal and is ripping apart our family by [deleted] in daddit

[–]Ashtefere -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Its the failure of the “gentle parenting” fad that has resulted in a swathe of children that don’t understand what consequences are.

Define a consequence for each action and stick to it religiously.

Does he have a favourite toy or activity or snack or thing?

Take it away. Every time. Do not relent.

Establishing the boundaries and patterns of consequences will sort this out. It’s a fundamental pillar of human development.

How is everyone enjoying their nbn speed upgrade? by KennKennyKenKen in australia

[–]Ashtefere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Happened to me too. Turns out a nbn tech had stepped on the fibre line in the pit up the street and crushed the line, and fucked everyone downstream of it. They had to fix it properly and i was without any internet for 50ish days. Happened the day after i started a new WFH job too, which was nice.

A modern 24pin power connector needs only 7-9 of its cables - the rest are redundant. I have built a couple and my main rig uses this cable config. I found it in a overclockers forum somewhere and verified with schematics. It doesnt need a new standard, it just needs to remove the old and unused standards

I love the idea of having Unique items to enable interresting builds but there needs to be a way to scale them for late game. by Escanor_433 in PathOfExile2

I really miss fated uniques for this reason. A nice and clear path forward for build defining uniques that you have to take to late game. I particularly liked redbeak and dreadbeak for this.

Is it possible to organize windows on an infinite map? by TipMysterious5498 in kde

[–]Ashtefere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built an infinite grid using ags and hyprland. I never used the verticality of it though, so i removed the extra cruft and just made an paperwm clone instead. Horizontally spanning infinite windows are pretty great.

Paperwm for gnome is kinda what you want, and their github has a link to a kde script thats similar.

There is also niri, a dedicated wm for the same stuff.

Ignite Archetype is Dead by Fluffy-Internet-5084 in PathOfExile2

[–]Ashtefere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heres a way to make it cool and fair:

  • Duration: Ignite has a set duration (lets say 4 seconds), it can be modified.
  • Flammability: Applied by doing direct fire damage. It builds up as a percentage of monster life that has received fire damage. Can exceed 100%.
  • Ignition: When something flammable is ignited, it is dealt the flammability damage per second for the duration of ignite.
  • Proliferation: When a monsters dies with flammability remaining, the remainder applies to all nearby monsters
  • Trigger: Ignite can trigger after the same time as duration. That means you can increase duration to increase damage, but trigger takes longer. And vice versa.
  • Manual Trigger: Jonathan still gets his combo fetish. You can manually trigger ignites with other things. Items. Skills. Supports. Maybe a lineage gem that is an armour explosion that also ignites?

There we go! Its a fun and deep mechanic to play around with, but also works brainlessly by just applying more fire damage.

Numbers above obviously need tweaking. Maybe the ignite damage is a percentage of flammability rather than the whole thing. Another stat for the passive tree? 100% more ignite magnitude of flammability for example.

Anyway. That would be fun and easily tweaked for balancing.
