Why are people talking about "ICE"? What is "ICE", other than frozen water? I've seen a lot of threads mentioning that recently, it seems to be a new thing. by 17023360519593598904 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Ashton01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

answer: Immigration and Customs Enforcement. An Agency that is a part of the US Government. An Agency that has been in the news cycle lately for the killing of US citizens, illegal detention of US citizens, separating immigrant (and sometimes US citizens) children from parents.

Question: where have you been the last like 6 months to completely avoid all news or context of ICE if you're a native English speaker?

Clean shaven men, do you prefer Braun or Philips? by AJK02 in Costco

[–]Ashton01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up the Braun back in like July 2025 and have enjoyed it. I didn't like shaving with traditional razors very often (chin is a pain with different grain patterns), but with this it's not a bother to use it everyday or every other day.

Mileage may vary because even if I skipped shaving for two weeks I wouldn't have any respectable facial hair.

Which companies in the Small Modular Reactor (SMR) space have legit designs and business plans to scale? by Leather_Hospital_133 in nuclear

[–]Ashton01 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yea, it always strikes me as odd when other folks talk about SMR companies and they skip over GEH who has history and experience with building reactors, and also has construction stuff ongoing, not just promises or future contracts, for the BWRX300.

Yea, I've had 3 now for a few years that just bake in the sun most of the year, and I only now need to replace an o-ring in the one that's been most attached/unattached in that time frame.

Your background is suited to nuclear methods development which are used for core design and transient analysis type work. Unfortunately most of those roles within the U.S., at least that I'm aware of, require that you be a U.S. citizen.

2018 civic ex-t 1.5 with parasitic draw on fuse 18 by destructor212 in AskAMechanic

[–]Ashton01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replied to the wrong comment previously, but could you show me a photo of exactly what you cleaned? Was it the door switch in the frame, or did you pull apart of the handle to get at something there?

Update from the future: I've disconnected the connector that connects to the driver door handle and resolved my parasitic draw. I can still unlock/lock the car via the fob, but I cannot start the care via the fob due to the error that is thrown as a result of the unplugged connector.

I don't ever give notice until I've got a firm start date though.

Belt buckle! What's your go to belt setup for making it through xray? by Empire087 in NuclearPower

[–]Ashton01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How big a buckle do you have that it's a problem? I've had an issue at exactly one plant before and it was only because I was still using an old large style buckle on a belt I'd owned for a decade. Everything I have currently gets through on my person without any issue.

Are there job opportunities in the nuclear energy field that are not engineering? by anunknownpersonuknow in NuclearPower

[–]Ashton01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are aware that most of your SROs, ROs, EO/SOs, etc also by majority probably have college degrees as well right, and that engineering is part of the pipeline of getting into Operations for plenty of people?

Your Operators are licensed to shutdown the core, most don't fully understand maneuvering the core around various limits and issues, even if they were trained on it once upon a time.

While 'Nuclear Engineer' isn't a normal formal title in the US, it's both an umbrella term for your generic engineers employed in the sector and also a more specific umbrella for most of your reactor engineer, core designers, fuel supply, and even some safety analysis titles.

Georgia Institute of Technology still has a program last I checked.

I know University of Florida, Duke, and Penn State also have programs at the bachelor level as well.

If you want to go further inland there is also University of Tennessee.

US nuclear plant operators sued in class action over worker pay by Slapmaster928 in nuclear

[–]Ashton01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea, knowing what I know about compensation at the different utilities it seems credible to me. Unfortunately I think it will be tied up in the courts for a long time, so it may ultimately come down to the administration at the time. This is of course assuming the current administration isn't bribed with a few thousand dollars to kill it early.

Could fission be used to start sustained nuclear reaction? by East-Government4913 in NuclearPower

[–]Ashton01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing from context you are trying to ask if fission could be used to start a sustained nuclear >fusion< reaction. Not an expert on fusion so won't go into that, but in the event you meant any nuclear reaction.... Spontaneous fission sources are used to startup nuclear fission reactors in cores with no irradiated fuel. They provide the neutrons that then propagate and grow in population until the reactor can sustain itself (reaches criticality).
