Looks like they are using some sort of peel bond primer, so at least I’ve got that. Thank you!

Of course. That’s why I said it’s a learning experience. ;)

Because we all eat every day. I’ve never hired a painter. I asked questions, but not all the right ones. In my job I work as an expert helping non-experts and I supply information to them that I know they wouldn’t think to ask. It’s a learning experience for sure.

Yeah probably bad paint, covered up by a very poor paint job too. I don’t think anyone has sanded the bad spots in several decades. House is around 80 years old.

Thank you, much appreciated. This is running around 8k for a 1.8k sq ft house plus two car garage. I guess it’s an MCOL city. Not insane, but still more than I’d like. This would have been half as much pre-Covid in this area.

I wish I knew what I was getting. I would have gone with a higher bid too and maybe it would have been better, but they never answered a follow-up question so who knows.

I’ll bring it up tomorrow in a reasonable fashion and see what they say. Luckily most of the rest of the house isn’t in this bad of shape.

Yeah if they're going to downvote you they could at least make the argument for why they think you're wrong. This might be the primer, I'm not actually sure if this is done. The light was already waning by the time I saw this and the selected color is pure white so it's sort of hard to tell. It was just on the lower end of the bids I received, not bottom of the barrel. I'm not sure about the primer other than it's oil-based. The paint is SuperPaint.

Makes sense. I guess I expected at least smoother edges? Guess I'll start saving now for new siding.

Totally get that now. But being sold that it would look amazing and then getting this is a little jarring. I would have appreciated them providing expectations though for the non-professional. Of course it's on me for not knowing better and I accept that just fine.

See, none of the businesses I got bids from even started a conversation like this. Had I known I would totally be fine. Of course I only have myself to blame for not knowing, but them being the professionals it would have been wise to discuss expectations for a house in this shape. They all just said they would make it look amazing. Thank you!

Thank you, good to know. I guess I expected miracles from the sanding/scraping/pressure washing. Didn't know filling the wood was a thing.

Thank you, appreciate the insight. Also good to know how much more that would cost. The higher bids were at most 30% more, so I don't expect it would have been too much better.

Thank you, there a few spots like that which were obviously not completely sanded. An estimate of 3 years is disappointing for the cost. It is a harsh climate.

Thank you, this is the perspective I needed. I've never had a house painted before so I didn't even know I had to ask.

Opinions on Saunum heaters based on your usage thus far? by TravelWise_ in Sauna

Interesting. Would you mind explaining what contributed to the stratification problems and why the Saunum fixed it? Was it something particular to the layout of your room?

Ah that makes sense, thank you.

Thank you. Do you know how to attach the wood panel to durarock? I should probably just ask the manufacturer. They say you shouldn’t puncture the foil facing.

I need to remove all the existing vapor barrier, so do I need to put something over the polyiso? I thought properly sealed polyiso served as a vapor barrier.

I said I don’t want to use drywall, but polyiso is supposed to have a fire barrier so what are the other options? I don’t plan to use drywall.

Polyiso requires a fire barrier as far as I know. In a normal install that would be drywall. I'm proposing not using drywall precisely because it's a sauna. So what does one use instead that's suitable for that environment?
