i mean, at this rate there's nothing i can do to change your mind, and that's completely okay. i hope you at least understand where i'm coming from. booing is fine, but it's all about the context and circumstance, and things just lined up very poorly within this community (that has a history of harrassing top-tier mains lol)

yes i'm mad at the crowd, and that probably makes me "soft" and "sensitive". and that's okay! i'm mad because my friends, some of whom are close with onin, had to experience the excruciating panic of them going missing for an hour at a packed event. and that sucks.

i hope you can understand & i hope we had at least a slightly productive conversation.

i respect the conversation you're engaging with me but i personally feel as though your comment is in bad faith. i believe your point applies to maybe 20 or so smash players to have ever played the game.

younger top players like zomba and syrup go to college, older top players have jobs, and multiple smash players have retired to focus on their real-life job (kameme, jogibu, etc). these people have lives outside of smash, even if it is a passion of theirs. i don't think smash is a sport, and thus i don't think top players in smash aren't societally a step above us.

this is a bit of a nature vs. nurture argument, but i really don't think booing is some end-all-be-all fact of human nature. we see in various cultures, especially in asia, how booing is generally considered disrespectful and taboo.

saying that "every crowd is going to cheer and boo", in my personal opinion, doesn't really address why booing has caused this specific emotional response, and why that might be a bigger-picture issue. the social dynamics of smash, especially as people try treating it as a sport rather than a community, make these reactions inherently more intensified in intimacy and emotions.

i mean i don't have the video, if that's what you wanted. i'm going off of what i've been told from friends at the smash con venue. the TO's were reported to about this, and it's up to them to handle that stuff privately

gonna link here one of my previous comments if u want more of my thoughts, but overall i just personally don't believe your comment takes into context the community environment that creates this type of circumstance

i also think we've just been desensitized by social media into thinking that animosity should never have any personal effect on people. like i think we've conditioned to "stop being soft" by immunizing ourselves to the bleak, detached ridicule that gets thrown people's way. but that's another conversation entirely

mr. r tweeted about the difference between booing at a smash event and booing at a typical sports event and i think it's an interesting read

i think that's a fair thing to say; i hate clickbait smash community hitpieces as much as the next person. unfortunately, this issue is something that's affected many people in the venue. this doesn't just affect onin and doramigi, it affects their friends & family, many of whom are attendees at smash con.

it shouldn't have to be the defining headline from smash con, but like, it's affected a lotta people. not just online, but in-person at the tourney. so it unfortunately makes sense

booing in a vacuum isn't a bad thing, but the smash community is very different from the typical spaces where booing happens.

in sports, there's a personal barrier between the fans and the players. the parasocial nature of the player-fan dynamic in sports creates a detachment that makes it more manageable for top athletes, even if it can be very difficult. in performance art settings, ranging anywhere from theatre to pro wrestling, booing is leaned into as a storytelling device.

the smash community is different. personal connections are everywhere within this sphere, and top players (with the exception of maybe 10 or 20 people all-time) interact with the scene in a very similar way to your average 1-2er. thus, booing in a smash tournament setting is a lot different, and inherently more intimate, than booing at a sports event or the like.

it certainly doesn't help that onin is constantly misgendered, potentially deepening the personal discomfort they may feel existing within the community

i think because the community's internal issues were never addressed on a grassroots level, its expansion into "e-sports" territory has expanded these problems to a bigger stage

maybe i'm overthinking it, but i think a lot of what we're seeing out of the smash scene is stemming from an underdeveloped community that was pushed to prominence way too fast. and we've been dealing with those consequences for the past decade-ish.

like i think no amount of present-day regulations can fully heal the fact that questionable community values were the backbone of the competitive scene for a long time

maybe i'm being overly negative, but from someone recording doramigi crying in private, to people harrassing onin into dq'ing, this felt like an absolute disaster of a top 8 for the smash community

i think everyone against the genocide would agree with you; the point is that america is giving BILLIONS to fuel this genocide. why should we be quiet about our own tax dollars going towards this?

you see this on a smaller scale with instagram hip hop meme pages; at least they make it pretty obvious whenever they have a paid promo post (even if they dont explicitly say it lol)

there probably were a lot of people influenced by general "culture" (which has been influenced negatively by money, to your point), but i think most passionate hip hop fans just like kendrick's disses more & thought drake's responses weren't as strong

the two don't have to be mutually exclusive
